Yet another Northeast Jackson store is moving to Madison.
Meanwhile, check out the adjacent parking lot.

Barnes & Noble was the anchor.
Remember buying a book and then hitting the Cold Stone Creamery? Good times.
I can remember as a teenager hearing that Best Buy was moving there and how awesome it was. What will we say about Madison in 30 years ? I hope the best. Does Marshall know the brick count required for a nèw building in Madison?
At one point Circuit City, Best Buy, and Campos were right there.
5:58: If only there were a clothing store that shut down in Madison. that would make it real convenient for Marshalls.
Jackson’s retail sales tax base seems to be evaporating pretty fast
Sad to see, but not surprising. "Next!"
more room for another place like mbar..
I ask myself so many times. What happened to our great city? KF, you had flashback Friday the other day and it was 1989. I have to say there was no better place to be (in my opinion) than this great city. In the 80’s this was a Great Place to be and now it has….well…gone down the drain. It breaks my heart. So many good people were once here! They left. And what happened? It became brown and blighted…. It really makes you sad to think back about the good times. My wife and I use to enjoy this city so much in the 80’s. People can say what they want, but riding around McDowell Road and hanging out is something young people today will never know about. Well, we still have some good memories.
Good. Maybe I'll feel safe shopping there. I'm tired of being harassed by the homeless
@6:16p- Yep, and the current administration couldn’t care less!!
I doubt people in madison are clamoring to go shopping at Marshall’s. Yuck
Kingfish the pussy culls yet another entry that tells the truth.
Well said & so True 6:48 I lived off McDowell Rd from 1967 to 2017. 2 house break-ins, one car stolen & Totaled (Injuring a pregnant woman in the car they Hit)
One purse stolen around 11am, in front of Freds on Terry Rd.
3 shots fired into bedroom around 6am. all of that in 2017!!!JACKSON, the city with Soul ###
More parking for the Murder Bar. Plenty of room for the weekly wild west shootouts.
Is this a potential Jail Facility. Isn't it close to that have a drink and murder someone nightclub?
7:34 "I doubt people in madison are clamoring to go shopping at Marshall’s. Yuck"
You're soon right! It's only gonna bring their same clientele up to Madison.
Don't need or want it.
@6:48
Places for personal engagement hold a community/city/area together. So when churches, bowling, rotary club, etc see a decline... you've entered the death spiral. They help keep unrelated people civil toward one another.
I've also been thinking a lot about the 1989 post. Those were good years on into the mid-90s. WTF happened? Why can we not take it back to where it used to be? How we just going to give it all away?
I don’t blame them. If you ask me, they should’ve moved to Madison years ago. I don’t know why everyone is acting brand new over a department store moving elsewhere. If only I had a dime for every time someone logged onto the Internet and acted like they were someone else.
I can remember as a teenager hearing that Best Buy was moving there and how awesome it was. What will we say about Madison in 30 years ? I hope the best. Does Marshall know the brick count required for a nèw building in Madison?
Great point. Marshalls could've simply opened a new location. Instead they are creating more sprawl in the metro area.
Are they moving to the old Steinmart location in Madison?
Never heard of Marshall's. And Old Navy is nothing but a rummage warehouse. Neither could make it in Madison, The County unless they sell Raiders gear and chicken wings.
PS: There ain't no clothing store in Madison.
6:48- leadership vacuums.
I moved to the area when Danes was mayor and Jackson was bearable.
30 years of a leadership vacuum and you have Atlas Shrugged
My guess is that they’re going into the old Stein Mart location in Madison. Left vacant when the chain went belly up.
Moving in the old Stein Mart in Madison?
You can empty a barrel a teaspoon at a time- MDE, Marshalls, Cal-Maine, …drip, drip, drip
I would’ve thought Pearl or Flowood would have been a better fit for Marshall’s.
7:15 AM
Likely.
I'm reminded of either pre-March 2020 or 2019 we went in to Marshalls on county line and it felt like a sauna. We spoke to the manager at checkout and the owners of the strip mall are out of state. They were having trouble getting the managers to get the A/C fixed. So I wouldn't be surprised if terrible building management was also a factor.
Areas decline when people stop being civil toward one another. Businesses leave. Affluent leave. Etc.
The places I mentioned (bowling, local sports, church, etc) forge those personal connections that 1) keep people civil and 2) make life worth living.
If there's ONE thing covid has taught me, really hammered home, is how little people care for one another...as in willing to mask up, keeping reasonable distance, promote cooperation, and getting vaccinated. Instead it's all about ME... instead of all about US.
So when you are dismayed that I'm not on the so-and-so committee anymore, don't go to church anymore, quit volunteering, and let my yard go to crap... it's because you've revealed your true colors, and I don't want to be anywhere near you.
I've never heard of that store.
Regarding the pro-80s posts, I lived in Jackson during most of the 1980s and while it was far better than it became, it was not nearly as great as they say. Apparently they never lived in a nice town. But coming from a couple of smaller cities in MS, I found that Jackson's only advantage was availability of retailers and proximity to state government - you could get most anything here most anytime, unlike what you find in dinkytown. Other than that, Jackson was NOT great.
Hard to run a business when half your product is "woking" out the door . Ever look in a Dollar Store dumpster ? Employees throw things from the trucks into the dumpsters then come back after closing to get the booty.
10:21, I have given it thought over the years because I sincerely wish Jxn could improve.
But I think it all comes down to criminal prosecution.
You need gentrification to increase the tax base and overall diversity and you will never have that with soaring crime.
Judges and elected officials actually being tough on crime is the only way that I see forward.
And the majority of the voters don't want that.
So I genuinely don't see a path back to the 80s and early 90s.
Gentrification. Or Receivership. There's your choice. Competent leadership can either be elected or installed involuntarily.
Get ready for Emily Sander's newest project!!
or,
"The New Horizon M.B. Worship Church of the Special Saints of Zion and Abraham annointed on the Precious One" church.
or,
The newest dysfunctional City of Jackson department.
Because too many voters/residents/citizens of Jackson are happy with the leadership that they have, things will not get better because they are happy to have what they have. The only option to stop the nonsense crime and court blessings is for the city to go bankrupt which will in turn force the state to take over the city government. If and when that happens, Jackson will have a chance to actually rebuild and become something better.
So like 9:38 said, receivership....
a 1% higher tax rate, a city that isn't business friendly, shoppers moving to the burbs, and an incompenent mayor that blames everyone else? There's no reason for businesses to stay in Jackson.
Why all that ragging on Marshall's? Last time I was at one, I got GOBS of Polish, hand-cut full-lead crystal - Ralph Lauren, and in a PLAID pattern, at a quarter of retail. Where else in that wretched metro, are you going to even FIND plaid crystal?
That made a great housewarming gift for a young cousin fresh from passing the Bar, getting his first house, and first real job. His fiancee from New Jersey was more impressed with his crystal, than that he has access to the (family's) company's Jet.
Another time, they had Ralph Lauren tripod search light lamps. I hesitated, and when I went back, they were gone.
And over the years, I've accumulated dozens of (stackable) Philippe Starck Ghost Chairs, which are over $400 at Saks and Neiman's, but under $90, at Marshall's/Ross/TJ.
So, excuse me, but Marshall's will be extremely welcome in Madison, where people know (and love) bargains. Madison people are mainstay customers, anywhere there's expensive stuff, marked down cheap. And now, Madisonians won't have to drive to Northeast Hell, to bargain-shop.
There are clothing shops and boutiques in the city of Madison. There are quite a few. Get your facts straight.
Honestly I didn’t know we still had a Marshall’s. Stores like that are dying across the country due to Amazon. I’m surprised the store lasted here this long.
Please list the 'clothing shops' in Madison. And not the 'here today' shops that sell toddler stuff imprinted with rabbits and turtles.
Men's slacks? Dress shirts? Sport coats? Ties? Nice jeans for ladies? Camisoles? Heels? Oh, wait! I about forgot Wall Mark.
Meanwhile....chicken.
One of the main problems is that, compared to other states in the South, no one is moving here. Mississippi should have more than 4 million people and we can't even reach 3 million. More than 1 million should be in the Hinds/Rankin/Madison County metro. Right now, for one area (Fondren, Madison, Flowood) to thrive, another area has to go down (South Jackson, North Jackson). The folks with the means move to a new area and the chain stores follow. This is also why you hear that good schools have suddenly "gone down" as people find new districts to switch.
Oh, and for those who think the '90's were a paradise, Kingfish you should find copies of the old Metro Crime Commission ads that ran back then. They did a great job of scaring the hell out of anyone living in Jackson.
@7:34 PM You are wrong. Madison shoppers will absolutely shop at Marshall's. Yes, Madison has a high household income but these are not the elites sending their kids to private school. Madison citizens are working families who are looking for deals. Home Goods does well there, and it is part of the TJ Maxx/Marshall's family. I predict Marshall's will be a great addition to that shopping center.
I've lived in Madison forever. What and were is 'home goods'? Every store all the way from Michaels around to the empty movie theater is a morgue. Even the stores to the north of Wal Mart where the rotund thieves like to shop-lift are virtual echo chambers. But, HEY! We gots chicken up in here.
@7:34... ...Yes, Madison has a high household income but these are not the elites sending their kids to private school. Madison citizens are working families who are looking for deals....

I have news: Virtually all of the "elites sending their kids to private school", are also working families. And EVERYBODY looks for deals. Private Pre-K, K, and 12 years of private school (plus Law Camp or whatever, and the kids' ENDLESS extracurriculars), are not the end of it. There's also at least four years of college - generally more. We NEED those deals! Besides: bargain-hunting's a form of recreation. What else is there to do, in Mississippi?
@4:08 - Please explain: What and were is 'home goods'? Every store all the way from Michaels around to the empty movie theater is a morgue. Even the stores to the north of Wal Mart where the rotund thieves like to shop-lift are virtual echo chambers
Are you talking about Jackson or Madison - cause I'm not seeing it in Madison. I'd be happy to see retail die down as I buy 90% online but what's your point?
