And EVERYBODY looks for deals. Private Pre-K, K, and 12 years of private school (plus Law Camp or whatever, and the kids' ENDLESS extracurriculars), are not the end of it. There's also at least four years of college - generally more. We NEED those deals! Besides: bargain-hunting's a form of recreation. What else is there to do, in Mississippi? Yes, Madison has a high household income but these are not the elites sending their kids to private school. Madison citizens are working families who are looking for deals. Home Goods does well there, and it is part of the TJ Maxx/Marshall's family. I predict Marshall's will be a great addition to that shopping center.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2447438783001404385.post-89422849317405646602021-07-28T08:09:48.559-05:002021-07-28T08:09:48.559-05:00One of the main problems is that, compared to othe...One of the main problems is that, compared to other states in the South, no one is moving here. Mississippi should have more than 4 million people and we can't even reach 3 million. More than 1 million should be in the Hinds/Rankin/Madison County metro. Right now, for one area (Fondren, Madison, Flowood) to thrive, another area has to go down (South Jackson, North Jackson). The folks with the means move to a new area and the chain stores follow. This is also why you hear that good schools have suddenly "gone down" as people find new districts to switch.

Oh, and for those who think the '90's were a paradise, Kingfish you should find copies of the old Metro Crime Commission ads that ran back then. They did a great job of scaring the hell out of anyone living in Jackson. Last tim...Why all that ragging on Marshall's? Last time I was at one, I got GOBS of Polish, hand-cut full-lead crystal - Ralph Lauren, and in a PLAID pattern, at a quarter of retail. Where else in that wretched metro, are you going to even FIND plaid crystal?

That made a great housewarming gift for a young cousin fresh from passing the Bar, getting his first house, and first real job. His fiancee from New Jersey was more impressed with his crystal, than that he has access to the (family's) company's Jet.

Another time, they had Ralph Lauren tripod search light lamps. I hesitated, and when I went back, they were gone.

And over the years, I've accumulated dozens of (stackable) Philippe Starck Ghost Chairs, which are over $400 at Saks and Neiman's, but under $90, at Marshall's/Ross/TJ.

So, excuse me, but Marshall's will be extremely welcome in Madison, where people know (and love) bargains. Madison people are mainstay customers, anywhere there's expensive stuff, marked down cheap. And now, Madisonians won't have to drive to Northeast Hell, to bargain-shop. Apparently they never lived in a nice town. But coming from a couple of smaller cities in MS, I found that Jackson's only advantage was availability of retailers and proximity to state government - you could get most anything here most anytime, unlike what you find in dinkytown.
