Demarious Banyard is back in jail again.  The convicted killer caught a break this year and got out of prison on February 20 only to get arrested Sunday. Banyard killed a pizza delivery driver in 2003 when he was only 13 years old.  WLBT reported in 2006:

The Governor is NOT SHUTTING DOWN THE LIQUOR STORES.  A bout of Facebook foolishness broke out a little while ago.  Someone posted that the Governor is going to shut down the liquor stores at 3 PM today.  Needless to say, the fake news is spreading like wildfire on social media.  Yours truly spoke to the Governor's office.   Seriously, just think, people.  People can't go out for recreations right now.  The Governor or Health Department is not about to take away one of the last recreations or vices. Doing so does nothing to fight the Coronavirus and just agitates the population even more. 

The city of Canton issued the following statement.

The State Department of Health reported 847 infections and 16 deaths today. 195 virus patients  are hospitalized.  The Department will not report how many are on ventilators.  The pace of new cases reported has been around 90 cases per day for the last five days.

The Louisiana State Department of Health reported 3,540 cases of the Wuhan Virus and 151 deaths today.  1,127 patients are hospitalized (+200)  while 380 (+45) are on ventilators.   New Orleans continues to bear the brunt of the epidemic as Jefferson and Orleans parishes comprise 60% of infections and 67% of deaths.  However, their share is falling as the virus spreads out among the state. The department also said the vast majority of deaths had diabetes and obesity as pre-existing conditions.

The Coronavirus continues to spread in Mississippi.  The State Department of Health reported 758 infections and 14 deaths today. 173 virus patients are hospitalized.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 663 Covid19 infections in Mississippi today.  The virus's death toll is now 13 people in the Magnolia State.  152 patients are hospitalized. 

The Indians are really cracking down, literally, on those who violate quarantine.

How good of a con artist was Lamar Adams? Lamar Adams was so good that he sold timber investments promising 12% returns during a timber bust.  As Lamar shoveled phony timber deeds by the bushel to gullible investors, the timber market in Mississippi was in a ten-year depression. CALPERS lost more than $500 million on a ten-year investment in southern timber while Madison Timber investors enjoyed phony 12% returns,  The Institutional Real Estate website reported in 2018:

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 485 cases of Covid19 virus today.   The virus has killed five people. 31% of Covid19 patients were hospitalized. 

1,054 people have died of the Covid19 virus in the United States.  The numbers paint an even more dismal picture.  There were only 152 deaths a week ago (and that included 31 new deaths).  The daily increase skyrocketed to 254 deaths yesterday as the virus spreads.

JJ filed an Open Meetings Act complaint against the Jackson-Hinds Library System Board of Trustees yesterday with the Mississippi Ethics Commission.  The Board took several actions in March 2019 even though a quorum was not present.  The Board also discussed and voted on several items in executive session in August 2019 even though said items are exempted from the Open Meetings Act.   JJ asked the Commission to void all actions taken at the March meeting and August Executive Session.

Louisiana reports 65 deaths and 1,795 infections due to the Covid19 virus.  New Orleans is the epicenter for the Louisiana epidemic as 66% of the infections are in Orleans and Jefferson parishes.  44 of the deaths are in those two parishes.  The news continues to worsen for New Orleans as the Covid19 wave threatens to swamp New Orleans hospitals.One New Orleans nurse described her hospital as a "war zone."  The Times-Picayune reported:

The Mississippi State Department of Health Health reported a second death and 377 cases of covid19.  The second death is former Lexington Mayor Clint Cobbins.

A lot of Mississippians are lying awake at night these days, worried about their loved ones, worried about their health, worried about their jobs and businesses, and worried mightily about the future of the U.S. economy and what impacts that will have on Mississippi.

Governor Tate Reeves just announced he is suspending dine-in service at restaurants and banning gathering of groups of more than ten people.    The Mississippi State Department of Health.  reported 320 cases of the Wuhan Virus although it has not updated its website. There were only 12 cases on Monday last week. 

The Mississippi Community Education Center apparently spent millions of TANF funds on fitness trainers, leases, paying famous employees, advertising, and other forms of largess.  The leadership of MCEC is under indictment for allegedly embezzling millions of dollars in TANF funds obtained through DHS grants.  However, MCEC fire back and said it acted under DHS approval and direction. 

A police chase didn't end so well for the driver of a Dodge Charger last week.  Pearl police noticed the car didn't have a license plate on Pearson Road and tried to pull it over.  The Charger took off, got on I-20 East, and sped over 100 mph.  Pearl police chased but gave up.  The suspect got off at the Crossgates exit and managed to flip his car.  Police charged him with felony fleeing, reckless driving, and having no license plate.  A witness managed to videotape the arrest.  The video is posted below.

The Harvard Global Health Institute estimates Mississippi is woefully short on ICU and hospital beds needed for Covid19 infections.  Harvard compiled hospital data for all states and published the information online.  Epidemiologists estimate 20% of Covid19 patients will require hospitalization.  The Institute estimates Mississippi will suffer over a million infections.  Posted below are the Harvard estimates for Mississippi's hospital and ICU capacity.

As our country confronts the coronavirus pandemic, there are lessons we can and should learn from previous mega-disasters.

Madison County Deputies arrested Canton attorney Lawrence Blackmon last night for public drunkenness, public profanity, and failure to comply.  Deputies encountered Blackmon on a drug raid last night. The police report states Blackmon repeatedly cursed and screamed at deputies as he repeatedly used the "F" word.  JJ obtained the report through a public records request.  The report states:

While Mississippi is suffering a relatively mild outbreak of the Covid19 Virus, the New Orleans area is under assault from that deadly little bug.  The Louisiana Department of Health reports 380 cases and 10 deaths.

As a child in the mid-1960s, I remember standing in a line out the door and into the parking lot of the school building where my twin sister and I received our oral polio vaccine. We stood with hundreds of rural Mississippians in the hot sun, waiting on that magic sugar cube.

The Ridgeland Police Department issued the following statement. 

The number of Covid19 deaths is 105.  Sharyl Attkisson posts a daily total compiled from CDC reports on her website. All but a handful of deaths are patients over the age of 60.  That little bug is feasting down at a retirement home in New Orleans. It killed two residents and infected more.  Her list includes the age and sex of the deceased.

The Mississippi Legislature suspended the 2020 legislative session. It will resume April 1.

Special Circuit Judge Jeff Weill ordered Attorney Barry Gilmer to appear in Madison County Justice Court tomorrow for execution of his sentence. However, the hearing was continued until May due to the closure of the courthouse.  The Justice Court convicted Gilmer of discharging a firearms towards a dwelling and disturbing the peace.  Judge Weill dismissed Gilmer's appeal after the attorney failed to appear for his jury trial.  JJ reported on December 17, 2018:

The Wuhan Virus is wreaking havoc in northern Italy as it overwhelms hospitals.   The Journal of the American Medical Association interviewed Dr. Maruizio Cecconi today about the crisis in Italian hospitals.  Dr. Cecconi is the head of anesthesiology & ICU at Humanitas Research Hospital in Lombardy, Italy.  He provides a ground-zero view of what is taking place in Italy.  The video of the interview is posted below.

Mississippi voters will have not one but two medical marijuana initiatives on the ballot in November.  The Senate passed a resolution last night that will place an alternative medical marijuana measure on the ballot.  The resolution passed the Senate on a 34-17 vote. The resolution is an alternative to Initiative 65, which legalizes medical marijuana in Mississippi.

The Mississippi State Department of  Health issued the following statement.

The St. Paddy's Day Parade is cancelled due to the Coronavirus. The State Department of Health advised cancelling the parade this morning.  Malcolm White took their advice and made the decision to shut it down. The parade will return next year.

Hinds County Circuit Judge Adrienne Wooten freed another violent criminal yesterday.  Darnell Turner is serving 45 years for strangling the mother of his child, shooting at her, and hanging her from a bridge. Of course, the thug appealed his sentence. He asked Judge Wooten to grant him a bond while he appeals his sentence.   The ever-so-gracious Circuit Court Judge ignored the Attorney General's objections and said yes, he could go home if he posted bond.  Turner made the $250,000 bond and is no longer in prison.

As the Democratic presidential primary came into focus in Mississippi over the weekend, it was interesting to observe just how closely the race in Mississippi mirrored the national narrative.

Rankin County Deputies are searching for four auto burglary suspects after a chase ended at Old Canton Road and Ridgewood Road.  The suspects are considered to be armed and dangerous.

A Rankin County court approved the sale of David L. Lane's Ridgeland home for $293,000.  The proceeds from the sale will be deposited with the court.

Nothing if you are one. Like Entergy Mississippi and Mississippi Power. Regulated monopolies are largely protected from competition and are great for their shareholders. Not so great for their customers though. Especially if the regulator (the Public Service Commission) has its thumb on the scale for the monopoly.

Porter Bingham's trial is continued yet again.  A grand jury indicted him recently for bank fraud, money laundering, and wire fraud that were allegedly committed in a $2 million bond sale for Rolling Fork in 2015. The case has been continued five times. 

While the state of Mississippi currently has no known or reported cases, the growing global concern over probable U.S. impacts from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic certainly should not be wasted on Mississippians.

This little fracas took place at a beauty supply shop down in Gulfport.  A woman apparently got caught in a state of purloin when her purse was dumped.  Things went downhill from there.  Enjoy.

Last week when agents from the State Auditor’s office made six arrests in our Mississippi Department of Human Services (DHS) investigation, we put a stop to a multimillion-dollar public embezzlement scheme. We worked quickly and quietly over the last eight months to uncover this fraud. When we had proven the case against those six people, we brought the case to light immediately and put a stop to it before any additional money flowed to those individuals.
