Madison County defendant calls his prosecutor the "perfect man for the job"

Update September 1, 2015: County prosecuting attorney Alan Phillips recused himself from the two cases.  A Madison County Assistant District Attorney will handle the prosecution.

The local news media gave quite a bit of attention to two doctors who were arrested for allegedly hosting a party for teenagers and providing them with alcohol last October.  A pair of Madison moms also drew heavy coverage when they were arrested in Florida for allegedly providing booze to minors and hosting a spring break party at a condo.  However, one case that slipped under the radar took place in Flora as businessman Cliff Torrence got in trouble with the law not once but twice for hosting parties at his home and providing alcohol to teen-agers.

The Southern State That Can’t Keep a Southern Pace

Mississippi falling behind in manufacturing isn’t exactly heart-stopping news. In fact, given our state’s long string of economic development failures, it isn’t even a surprise.

Too many times we have seen headlines crystallizing the sad state of affairs of our current economic and manufacturing environment. In just the last two weeks, we have seen two major articles in the state’s largest publications highlighting Mississippi’s dismal performance on manufacturing job creation.

A word about the ads.

We have got a few days to go until the first round of 2015 elections.  Thrill of victory, agony of defeat, and all that jazz.  There is no two ways around it but political coverage is going to dominate the news for the next week.  That means you will be bombarded with ads.  It can get irritating but the ads are there for a reason.

Each ad on this website is a compliment to you, the reader.  Its fun and quite easy to bash candidates.  However, there is a flip side to the equation.  These are the guys who decided to stand for something, to stand up and say "This is who I am and this is what I am about".  There are not many people who are willing to do that.  They are the ones knocking on your doors when its 95 degrees outside in July.  They have to ask for money, go to every social event,  take part in the normal mud-slinging that come with campaigns, have everyone and anyone go through their personal lives, see their personalities dissected on Facebook and Twitter, we won't even go there.  They deserve respect for what they are doing regardless of whether they are right or wrong.

The ads on this site are user-friendly.  There are no pop-up videos that can't be disabled.  Many of the ads you don't see unless you click on a post.  You don't have to listen to a commercial and wait for your radio show to start.  You have the choice to play the commercial... or not play it.   However, I encourage you to watch the commercials posted, read the material candidates pay to post on JJ, and give them your serious thought and consideration.  As stated earlier, all of these ads are a testament and compliment to you.  Remember, they have come here asking you for your vote.

McRae: What did Fitch spend $200,000 on?

This post is a paid advertisement.

Lynn Fitch: Over $200,000 in Campaign Finance Irregularities

You would think of all people our State Treasurer would have impeccable campaign finance reports … but you’d be wrong about that.

There are more than $200,000 in discrepancies in Fitch’s campaign finance reports. These include very large unitemized personal reimbursements, large unitemized credit card payments, suspiciously high charges at luxury spas and hotels, and over $120,000 in disbursements for an apparent loan that was never properly disclosed.

If we can’t trust our State Treasurer Lynn Fitch with her own campaign finances, how can we trust her with the taxpayers’ finances? And perhaps more importantly, what information is she hiding in these suspicious campaign finance reports?

“Our campaign finance laws need reforming. These practices are illegal under federal campaign law and should be under Mississippi’s. But a law shouldn’t be required for Lynn Fitch to do the right thing. I challenge Lynn Fitch to live up to her promise of transparency and come clean on these questionable expenditures,” said Republican candidate for Treasurer David McRae. Check her spending for yourself:

Ashby Foote: R.I.P. Kemper

It has been an expensive few weeks for Mississippi Power (MP).  On May 20, SMEPA (South Mississippi Electric Power Association), a tentative partner in MP’s controversial Kemper Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) plant pulled the plug on its 15% ownership of the plant, necessitating the refund by MP of SMEPA’s $332 million down payment.  June 11 brought more cash draining news as the Mississippi Supreme Court refused MP’s request for a rehearing of the Court’s earlier decision requiring MP to refund to rate payers $281 million from an 18% Kemper related rate increase imposed in early 2013.  Add to that amount another $600 million in IOUs and tack on millions more in future shortfalls of byproduct revenues from the sale of CO2.  Due to plant delays, no CO2 has been produced and the contracts expired on May 1.  Byproduct sales were projected to generate $50 to $100 million per year for the life of the plant.  For financially strapped Mississippi Power, these developments represent an existential crisis.

How the North kept the South poor

This 1938 Jackson Daily News article tells the story of how the Southern governors fought to level the playing field with the North when it came to railroad freight rates. The railroad commissions  kept the freight rates very slanted towards the North.  Canada, yes- Canada, enjoyed lower freight rates on railroads than did the South; so slanted weighted against the South were the rates.  Thus a builder in New Orleans could get steel shipped more cheaply from Pittsburgh than he could from Birmingham.

These articles report the Southern governors fighting this unfair advantage while the Northern ones did everything they could to stifle their protests. Too bad equal protection jurisprudence was not as developed as it is today. FDR adviser Harry Hopkins pointed out in 1938 that the South faced freight rates that were 39% higher than the North.  Mr. Hopkins said:

Scam alert?

Is there a scam going on down in Hattiesburg, the Coast, and Florida?  Facebook is alight with messages alleging former Democrat operative Richard Buckman has engaged in some dealings that some claim are not exactly ethical.  Dane Maxwell posted these messages on his Facebook page and gave permission to JJ to publish them.  Mr. Maxwell is the President of CMV Investigations and was once a MDOT enforcement officer as well as a Chief of Staff for a Public Service Commissioner.

Washington ____ asks if Tunica blew its chance to escape poverty.

Washington _____ reporter Chico Harlan pondered whether Tunica County completely squandered its day in the sun when casinos boomed for nearly twenty years in that area in a story published in today's edition.  His thesis is Tunica wasted a golden opportunity to lift itself out of poverty after Sixty Minutes showed Tunica to be one of the poorest areas in America in a 1985 story.  Mr. Harlan reports:

Rankin Grand Jury moves to shut down Gold Coast of East Jackson.

Rankin County authorities claimed they had had enough of the free-wheeling and bootlegging Gold Coast and took steps to shut it down in January 1937.  The Jackson Daily News blared "Rankin Opens Vice War With Arrests" as the grand jury issued indictments on several Gold Coast operators.  The Gold Coast was an area of Rankin County that was bounded by the Pearl River and traversed by Casey Lane, Fanin Road, and Old Highway 49.  Numerous juke joints, nightclubs, casinos, and other dens of iniquity populated what was known as East Jackson.  It was a world of hard drinking, gambling, jukin', raunchy music, and violence.

History v. Heritage

Past issues of the Jackson Daily News yielded a few headlines that tell part of the story about Mississippi's racist past.  It's no secret mob violence ruled Mississippi at times, as blacks were lynched by mobs, morals and civil rights be damned.  However, it is one thing to be told about the lynchings and another to see them plastered on the front pages of the newspaper.  Here are some headlines and articles from the past that are not dead and definitely not forgotten, at least by those who suffered for decades under the rule of Jim Crow and the mob. The Duck Hill lynching gained particular notoriety, as blowtorches were used to obtain confessions in ways that would have made a Sicilian proud.  The German newspapers spared no effort in exploiting Mississippi's racism for its own propaganda, as seen below in one article.

Slipping through the cracks: our criminal justice system at work.

Flowood police arrested Roderick Carter early on February 13, 2015 for armed robbery after he and his girlfriend tried to rob a convenience store on Lakeland Drive.  A Rankin County grand jury indicted him in April for three counts of armed robbery and three counts of a felon in possession of a firearm.  He currently resides in the Rankin County jail as he was denied bond.

However, he was convicted of a felony in Hinds County in 2014 and received a suspended sentence of nine years in prison with one year to serve but was given credit for time served so he was released in 2014. Unfortunately, his probation has not been revoked and it appears under the new law (HB #585) passed last year, MDOC may not be able to revoke his probation.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
