Jackson Jambalaya

Well, Councilmen De' Keither Stamps and Councilwoman Larita Stokes voted against a $100,000  change order on the Fortification Street project.  Hemphill Construction submitted the change order after it discovered more work was required than the original plans anticipated.  A giant hole developed on Fortification.  The drainage system required clearing and cleaning as it was filled with trash and debris.  The water lines in one area were too close to the surface and require an arched pipe for replacement instead of a regular pipe. Chief Engineer Robert Lee told the council the work was unexpected as it was almost impossible to predict what problems Hemphill would discover as work progressed.

Pete Perry came on the show in the second half and discussed the Hattiesburg Mayoral scrum and the Neshoba County Fair.

The city of Brandon will hold a hearing on a moratorium, yes, a moratorium on get this, small business development in downtown Brandon.  The city stopped issuing permits earlier this month.  See the notice below.

Morgan Keegan victims in Mississippi filed suit against the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) yesterday in U.S. District Court. The victims allege the SEC did not distribute $100 million to investors defrauded by Morgan Keegan as directed by law.  Morgan Keegan paid $200 million for defrauding investors when it sold mortgage-backed securities.

Since the City of Jackson will not post agendas on its website, here is the agenda for today's meeting of the city council.  Not much of interest, although Mayor Lumumba is asking the city council to confirm the appointment of Soyonda Green (not to be confused with Soylant Green) as Chief Administrative Officer.  Mr. Green was a legislative assistant to Congressman Bennie Thompson and was a Sergeant with the Hattiesburg Police Department in 2009.  He is the son of Hinds County Senior Circuit Judge Tomie Green. Not much else of interest on the agenda.

Fire up the War on Drugs war machine.  The Clarion-Ledger engaged in its annual bout of hysteria over drugs and of course the Governor joined right in.  Front page story on prescription drug abuse of course.  No less than five stories and op-ed pieces on the dastardly threat to our state. They rolled out the big guns and had Jerry Mitchell write a story, Technology makes faking prescriptions for narcotics much easier, in the Saturday edition.  The artillery barrage before the attack.  However, Mr. Mitchell did join in the main assault on Sunday as he interviewed the Governor. 

Recent JJ poll showed most of you use either C-Spire or AT&T. Good news for Verizon as they have no where else to go but up. I expected C-Spire to win but that is why you play the game.

The Wall Street Journal published a story Friday about the efforts of the Faulkner Estate to wring every bit of revenue out of the scribe's legacy. The recently reported lawsuits against Sony Pictures and Northrup over the use of Faulkner quotes were only one front in the battle as the copyrights to his work begin to expire in ten years. The estate removed Mr. Faulkner's Nobel Prize medal from Ole Miss and put it up for auction at Southeby's. The medal went unsold. Fortunately. The Journal reported:

Spoke to the WSJ reps several more times.  Didn't deliver last week, today was in improvement. The carrier delivered The New York Times.  She has delivered it exactly 3 out of 11 weekends. It being the WSJ.  Twice she has delivered the NYT instead.  Thank you Gannett. I'm starting to wonder if the carrier is literate. Seriously. Maybe I'll pull a Chane and next Friday night grab one of those orange barrels, put it on the curb, and tape a poster that says "Wall Street Journal HERE" with a big arrow. Of course I'd return the barrel in the morning.  If you're a Gannett advertiser, advertise on their websites. Customers can't see your print ads if they can't deliver the paper properly.

The Hinds County Board of Supervisors rejected the only bid for mosquito spraying last week.  The discussion became rather raucous at times as Supervisor Kenneth Stokes tried to push the contract to Hathorn Pest Control while claiming certifications were used to keep blacks from getting contracts.

Updated: Al Hunter withdrew from the race today. (July 24, 2013) Darryl McQuirter qualified.

Hinds County Interim District 2 Supervisor Al Hunter qualified to run for the seat today while his brother withdrew from the race as well.  Mr. Hunter earlier promised not to run for the seat when appointed.  Supervisors Kenneth Stokes and Robert Graham both said they were appointing replacements for Phil Fisher and the late Doug Anderson who agreed not to run for the seats.No matter. What are promises between friends.

Hope for the Delta? The New York Times asked the question this morning in a story about the Delta. Yup, the Delta has been discovered by the Yankee press.... again. The story focuses on the success Teach for America has had and the spillover effects. A reversal of the dreaded brain drain. The NYT reports:

WLBT reported Hinds County Supervisor Robert Graham said the county will not pay for the Democratic and Republican primaries in the elections to replace the late Doug Anderson and Phil Fisher on the Board of Supervisors.  However, he appeared to back down a little in a letter posted below.  Stokes said the parties could take the county to court.

Congratulations to the Faulkner Estate as it managed to find itself compared to Sharknado after a federal judge dismissed its complaint against Sony Pictures. Truly a feat worthy of the scribe as the Judge threw out a complaint that was on a par with Tara Reid's acting. Or should I have written it had as little logic as Tara Reid's brain? Or was the foundation for the complaint as jiggly as her... well, there are so many different comparisons one can imagine when Sharknado enters the picture but you get the idea.

Hinds County Supervisor Robert Graham told the Hinds County Republican and Democrat parties the county will not pay for primaries for the supervisor special elections for Districts 2 and 4 in November. Both parties recently announced they will hold primaries and runoffs for the two elections to replace Phil Fisher and the late Doug Anderson. The letters are posted below.

I'm going to write up the story later, but here is a video from the Monday meeting of the Hinds County Board of Supervisors.  The Board rejected the lowest bid for mosquito spraying after Mr. Hathorn of Hathorn Pest Control threw a hissy fit over not getting the contract. He demanded, no, that is not right, he told the board to award him the contract without accepting competitive bids. The board rejected the winning bid and took no further action.  Too bad Phil Fisher wasn't there. He would've straightened out any vendor who told the board to do something.   Enjoy.

Looks like we got ourselves a rematch in Canton. A judge threw out the results of the alderman's election in Ward 1 and ordered a new one be held. The Governor will select the date.  The Clarion-Ledger reported:

Nearly 70% of the voters in a recent JJ poll said they use the Iphone.  Results are below and that is what I call dominance.

The Clarion-Ledger published a story written by Brian Eason that was rather critical of Jackson's website. Mr. Eason pointed out in a fit of showing contempt for the people of Jackson that the city does not post minutes of city council meetings on its website. Such practice is common in large cities. Jackson used to publish the minutes but stopped doing so within a couple of months after Harvey assumed office in 2009. Hmmm.... now why would a Mayor quit posting minutes right after he assumes office?  Nary a peep out of certain local publications about that change in policy.

Judge Kidd granted the injunction against the open carry law as being "unconstitutionally vague". The injunction is in place until the legislature "reviews, amends, or clarifies HB2." The court said it:

The home at 1910 Eastover Drive was robbed again in the last 24 hours.   Thieves struck the house two weeks ago and shot a woman who was watching the house as the owners were away.  The thieves also killed the dog. The victim survived and is recovering from the injury.

An afternoon of excitement in NE Jackson and Ridgeland came to an end as Ridgeland PD arrested a Justin Fowler after he shot at a van leaving the Home Depot on I-55 N in Jackson.

Clinton Alderman Tony Greer (R-Choctaw Field) is first out of the gate as he qualified to run for Hinds County District #4 Supervisor today.  Mr. Greer is a CPA and commercial realtor. 

The Hinds County Democratic Party Executive Committee issued a press release concerning primaries for the elections of Supervisors in Districts 2 and 4. The qualifying fee will be $15.

Representative Andy Gipson (R-The Wild West) appeared on the first half of the show to discuss the court fight over the open-carry law.

Senator Jim Bean passed away Monday.  Here is an outtake from the video we produced about him in December.  It's one of those clips that was very good but was cut on the editing floor.  Very emotional moment for Mr. Bean and showed his character.

Former Canton Municipal Utilities general manager John Wallace sued three CMU board members in U.S. District Court yesterday for reverse discrimination. CMU fired Mr. Wallace on June 4, 2013, on a 3-2 vote.  He served in his position for 35 years. He is represented by attorney Lisa Ross. Mr. Wallace accused board members Landres Cheeks, Cleotha Williams and L.C. Slaughter of violating his civil rights and sued them personally. Mr. Wallace also filed a motion for a temporary restraining order requiring CMU to reinstate him as general manager.

Update: Senator Bean passed away Sunday.  It seemed fitting to bump up this post from a few weeks ago. Little did I know when I posted this video fate would take a turn for the worse.  I'm honored to have met the man and produced this video about him.  

Original post on June 26, 2013: JJ produced this video for the Mississippi Primary Healthcare Association in honor of former Senator Jim Bean. MPHA presented the video at a January luncheon honoring former Senator Jim Bean. He still lives in Hattiesburg and was a pleasure to meet. Very classy gentleman.  He took the lead in passing legislation establishing primary health care centers around the state. I am very proud of producing this video as it honors someone worthy of respect and presents several positive messages.   Enjoy the video.

Hinds County Circuit Judge Winston Kidd extended the temporary restraining order preventing enactment of the "open-carry" law until July 12, 2013.  Judge Kidd will hold a hearing on that day to determine whether to convert the TRO to an injunction or determine whether the law is actually constitutional.  See my Twitter feed at kingfish1935 to read an account of today's hearing. Judge Kidd will hear arguments today on the temporary restraining ordered he issued June 28 against enactment of the new "open carry" law. HB2 author Andy Gipson (R-The Wild West) sent these thoughts about the legal scrum to JJ and gave permission to use them:

Special Chancellor Larry Buffington ordered Hinds County to turn over to Jackson Jambalaya a copy of the settlement agreement between the county and Motorola. Hinds County sued Motorola in 2009 for damages. Hinds County claimed Motorola allowed Ridgeland and Madison to "bootleg" off of the radio system.*  The case settled for an undisclosed amount in 2011. It is not known how much money Hinds County or its attorney, Precious Martin, received in the settlement agreement. Attorney Curt Crowley represented Jackson Jambalaya.

Thieves broke into six cars at Briarwood Presbyterian Church Saturday afternoon during a carnival. The church was hosting the fund-raiser for The Little Lighthouse. The Little Lighthouse is a school for children with disabilities under the age of six years old.  The Little Lighthouse does not charge tuition and uses teachers and therapists to serve the children.
