Thieves getting bolder in NE Jackson.

WLBT reported last night more burglaries and armed robberies plague Northeast Jackson:

The window was locked, yet thieves managed to open it early Thursday morning. Then the northeast Jackson couple, who didn't want to be identified, heard a noise.

"Our dog barked, which she never does at night. My wife was like just go check the front of the house. I walked up and went to the living room in the front of the house and there was somebody crouched down on their knees," said the husband.

The burglar ran, setting off the alarm before he could return with his gun. Some of their valuables are gone and so is their sense of security.

"I've always loved this neighborhood. It's a wonderful neighborhood full of honest and hard working people. I never would've thought that this would happen to us here. This is one of the safest neighborhoods in Jackson but it makes you question. It makes you feel vulnerable. We don't feel safe in this house," said the wife.

Neighborhood associations from Old Canton Hill Drive to the Rollingwood neighborhood, just off Old Canton Road, have sent out alerts about several burglaries. Some of them occurred when the residents were home.

This is near Canton Club Circle where 14 people were held at gun point during a home invasion back May.

When asked what the couple believes the answer is to solving and preventing the home invasion burglaries, the husband answered "There's no answer. It can't be fixed."

The couple says they are discouraged, despite taking security measures, but vow not to let someone invade their home again.

JJ managed to obtain copies of the emails. Here are the emails.

First email:

My mother's home at XXX Rollingwood was broken into last night, too, about an hour earlier than the below incident. She was asleep and was wakened by his movement in her bedroom. She called out to him, pushed her life alert button and called me. He came through a window, too, and knew how to get through locked interior doors. He even turned down the AC so that the noise from the AC would mask his movements. Only took some coins, wristwatch & some gold jewelry. As we took her over to our home about 12:30 AM a number of cars & SUVs came down Rollingwood & out the front entrance. Sounds like he moved down the street after he left my mother's home"

Second email:

Tonight at 12:30, a burglar pulled up a chair to the kitchen window of my daughter & family's home at xxx Rollingwood Drive then came in the window while my daughter, son-in-law and 9 month old grandchild were asleep. The man took 2 laptops, cash and a Kindle and was out the back door before my son-in-law could get a gun. The alarm went off but not before the man took their belongings (being smart enought to wear gloves and not leave fingerprints) and got away. The police say that they wished that my son-in-law had had enough time to get his gun and shoot the person because that is all that they (the police) can do about this activity. This person got into the backyard through the locked gate next to the driveway. The intruder would have had to realize that people were at home because my son-in-law's truck was in plain view in the driveway and they leave a few lights on in the house in case the baby wakes up. My daughter locked herself and the baby in the baby's room and called 911. She watched out the front window of the bedroom and saw a car start and leave on Poinciana Drive which is right across the street from their house. My daughter and her family have only lived in our neighborhood for 4 months and now, sadly, will probably no longer live her 4 months from now. I surely hate to see that this trend of home invasion, which has been steadily on the rise in --

JJ will obtain copies of the police reports.

I'll bet the burglars were white conservative Republicans!

Rollingwood was the place to be while growing up in the 60's and 70's. We built the 3rd house in the new subdivision in 1960 when I was 6 months old. My friends and I played ball in our front yards, drank from the garden hose, explored the woods to the river and hauled ass home when the street lights came on because it was dinner time and our asses would be handed to us if we weren't there. I wouldn't trade the memories for anything and consider myself lucky to have grown up there leaving our doors unlocked and windows open with the attic fan on. We moved away in fall of '78 just before the flood and have seen the entire area slowly degenerate since. Whats happening there right now is enough to make me want lay low in the territory i know like the back of my hand and see if JPD really meant what they said.

All it will take is a few of these thieves to turn up dead thanks to some prepared homeowners and word on the street will travel fast.

You live in Jackson. Sleep with your gun like a big boy.

"I never would've thought that this would happen to us here."

Seriously? You. Live. In. Jackson. If you want to be able to say that, move to the 'burbs.

No doubt the perps would rather go legit but the hundreds of low wage service sector jobs promised by Whole Foods haven't become available yet.

Once Wendell Watts left that precinct everything went to hell. Leadership matters.

See if George Zimmerman wants to relocate!

"The burglar ran, setting off the alarm before he could return with his gun."

How did they know he was going for his gun?

Also, why did the alarm go off when the burglar ran away, but not go off when the burglar broke in?

Anonymous said...

No doubt, Watts can crush crime.

They probably didn't have window contacts for the alarm. When he went through the door, he set off the alarm.

"...before he could return with his gun." I believe the 'he' is the homeowner.

July 27, 4:23...just shut up about Whole Foods---you and everyone else who has or has thought or is thinking about making a comment with 'Whole Foods' in it. Give it a rest. Please. It's been overdone.

The writing style, word usage and composition of both emails seems, well, identical.

Getting through windows should be hard, not easy.
If you don't have sensors, get key locks. If you can't afford to do that, drill a hole in the sash that doesn't go all the way through and stick a good nail in it.
The nail is a good idea anyway if you like to raise a window to let in air. You can drill a second hole and secure the window when raised and not raise it enough for someone to get in.
There are inexpensive sound and motion detectors for breaking glass.
If they are not breaking glass, they are cutting the glass and using a suction cup to unlock the window which is time consuming. Flood lights that come on with motion aren't expensive. How are the exterior lights? And I take it the windows they are choosing aren't visible from the street and to neighbors.
Button interior door locks are only for privacy. Anything that can go through the hole will pop them. A lock that drills through the frame or floor is always best on doors...exterior as well. Doors should have double sided dead bolt locks that don't make exit so easy.
This sounds like one team of burglars that have cased the neighborhood. Has anyone replaced a roof in the neighborhood? Seen the same people or cars drive through? These burglars seem to know which windows in an older neighbor haven't been painted shut or can't open because of house shifting/settling!
Burglars choose the easiest targets and ones where they KNOW there will be something worth the risl to take. Do NOT position your laptops and jewelry or silver where it can be seen from a window.
And, cameras have become a reasonable alternative.
Get a security check of your home no matter where you live. Neighborhood Watch at police depts usually do that for free. They can point out your areas of vulnerability and make suggestions.
Securing your home requires changing your habits, like keeping keys handy in case of fire.
But, when one lives in a large city, one quickly learns to do this without inconvenience. It's a mean world out there and we don't want to pay higher taxes to have modern, well staffed police forces or a state of the art state crime lab.
One person with a drug habit they can no longer afford ( teen or adult) can make any neighborhood unsafe. They will tell the burglars what they need to know or do it themselves!
We can move every 30 years or so until there's no place left to go and continue to blame the victims or we can fight crime.

One word solution

Dogs

Dogs work very well for this problem.

Man's BF

Would having and USING an alarm system not prevent a lot of these crimes? Remember, using it means that you actually arm it, and not leave it turned off all the time.

Anonymous said...

Have gun or guns next to bed and be prepared to shoot the bastard in your house. That will stop someone from breaking into your home a second time

Alarms don't work when they cut the glass out of a window and come in that way! Motion detectors can't be used if you have pets over a certain size. Dogs are typically a great deterrent, but clearly that can't be counted on after seeing what happened in Eastover.

It isn't always about what the home owners are doing wrong or aren't doing--it's about these thugs that go above and beyond to take anything that is not theirs. Period.

Shoot to kill--that's what it is going to take! Sad, but true.

The only universal language the thugs understaned.

Insomnia and a reliable firearm work well in concert. Also light up the back yard at night and post a 'snake farm' sign at the gate.

7:02 pm apparently that's an attitude you and thugs share.

And you both apparently find it too difficult to roll up your sleeves and work with others to solve your problems but rather like to be angry and cast blame.

You both limit your respect for others to those who share your views of the world in which you live.

Your language is the same indeed.Thankfully, it's not universal but the language of those who cause the rest of us such grief.

Tell us 7:02 AM how Jackson suddenly reverses direction and solves a crime problem it has avoided for 3+ decades? Blaming victims and those who refuse to become victims is a cop out.

the difference between Mississippi and Louisianna...guy shoots/kills someone breaking into his car here...NO CHARGES. Same thing happened last week in New Orleans...SECOND DEGREE MURDER CHARGES. Mississippi has its perks!

Anyone who continues to live in Jackson assumes the risk of being robbed/burgled/attacked. Which is why anyone who has any sense will either leave or live in a neighborhood with a giant wall around it and 24-hour security along with dogs, a good burglar alarm, and at least one firearm.

The New Orleans case is linked below. 14-year-old thief (with crim record) climbed over wall at perimeter of property. Homeowner ("HO") shot him in head. Perp is still alive, HO was charged with attempted murder:
http://www.wdsu.com/news/local-news/new-orleans/nopd-man-shot-in-head-in-marigny-in-critical-condition/-/9853400/21178686/-/lyloduz/-/index.html

If you stay in Jackson, this is what you risk. Shoot a home invader, run the risk of the Hinds DA deciding to charge you with murder/manslaughter. Expect heavy pressure from Lumumba, the Stokes clowns, and the rest to charge you with murder (if even remotely possible) and/or definitely manslaughter. Unless you're black, that is, like in the recent car robbery case. Then, no worries!

JPD arrested someone trying to go through a window in Rollingwood at 2 a.m. last night- 2 or 3 houses down from the previous incident. No doubt it is the same person.

Some dumb-dick on Rollingwood calles the police at 2 a.m. to report 'someone is crawling through my window'. WTF!?

7:41pm You need to re-read if you don't see that we agree that blaming the victim is a cop out.

You can't " suddenly reverse" decades of going in the wrong direction.

In the interim, you take protective measures.

But, a strong , well-equipped, well-trained police force is a good beginning.

Then you start addressing the reasons young people ( and crime is a young person's activity) start down the wrong path.

It took us a long time to get into this sorry state of affairs and it will take a long time to get out of it, but many cities...NYC is a good example began to address crime successfully.
Stealing ideas that have proven to work in other places isn't a bad start! Of course, it does require gathering FACTS rather than feelings and anecdotes.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
