For many years, members of the Jackson old age club shared fond memories of the Hickory House (RIP). It was a flat roof, cinder block joint, located in the 2300 block (I think) of West Capitol Street across from Cedarlawn Cemetery (I'm pretty sure), a half mile east of the "Old Ladies Home" (I can't remember what year they tore down the OLH). I have a really good memory for an old fart, don't I? However, there is one thing I remember, with full, absolute certainty: the Hickory House steak finger baskets were tasty good.

 The St. Louis Fed reports Mississippi's labor participation rate was 54.6% in May.  The participate rate has been falling albeit with a few bumps since 2010 when it was over 60%.  

A new federal indictment against former Hinds County interim Sheriff Marshand Crisler alleges he agreed to protect a felon from arrest and prosecution in exchange for payoffs. 

A federal grand jury indicted Crisler for selling ammunition to a convicted felon and bribery in programs concerning federal funds. The original indictment stated: 

 Can the government ban the possession of firearms by convicted felons when they are no longer in prison?  U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves dismissed a prosecution against convicted felon Jessie Bullock after finding a law prohibiting such possession was unconstitutional under the recent Bruen decision.

 The dustup between U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate, Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, and Water Manager Ted Henifin settled down after a hearing in federal court last week.  

 An extremely dangerous trio of teen-agers broke out of the Henley-Young Juvenile Justice Center in Hinds County after stabbing a detention officer.   The fugitives are Tayshon Holmes (17), Robert Earl Smith (16), and Jason Jones (15). 

 The Hinds County Board of Supervisors will vote to approve a garbage collection contract with Waste Management Monday.  WLBT reported:

Texans are often recognized for the pride that they have in their home state. I get that. Not because I think Texas is that much better than other states in our country, but because I take great pride in my home state of Mississippi. Six years ago, I wrote an introduction to the book, “A Mississippi Palate.” In it I relayed a story of an epiphany I had a dozen or so years ago. It’s always struck me as odd that I had to travel halfway around the world to truly appreciate the entirety of my home state.

Here we go again.  The Waste Management contract for garbage service in Hinds County expires Friday night yet the Hinds County Board of Supervisors have yet approve a contract.  Sound familiar? Rinse, Repeat.

Driving into the Neshoba County Fair gates for an inspection of what needed cleaning, washing, replacing, fixing, or receiving other attention at the Salter-Denley cabin, there was no doubt that this was a courthouse-to-statehouse election year in Mississippi.

Dr. Pollard described how  envy and self-pity filled the elder son as he hid behind a wall of self-righteousness that made him no better than his prodigal brother.   Enjoy the short lesson as Dr. Pollard says more in twelve minutes than do the preachers who sermonize for an hour.

Videographer Kendall Johnson was supposed to go down in OceanGate's third mission to the Titanic but fortunately for him, weather problems cancelled his dive.  The ill-fated fifth mission took place two days later.  Some foreshadowing occurred while he was on the ship as problems continued to pop up.  Indeed, the crew was asking the passengers for help in evaluating computer problems.  So much for expertise.   We all know what happened next and Mr. Johnson is probably giving thanks to whatever his god is for sparing him for a horrible fate.  A shooting took place in Ridgeland tonight. Ridgeland Police Chief Bryan Myers said the shooting took place at an apartment complex on Pine Knoll Drive (behind Amerigo's. ).  Ridgeland police are investigating and will provide more information later.

 JPD charged 17 year-old Zachary Stevens with capital murder in the death of a three-month old baby on June 5.   The homicide took place on May 31.  

The Seabees base is under attack in Gulfport but not from a foreign enemy.  The Maritime Executive reported:

 Retired WLBT News Director Dennis Smith passed away yesterday.  He was the best news director this town has seen over the last few decades.  He was a newsman at heart and expected his reporters to be the same.  Many a cub reporter came to him fresh out of college and moved on to bigger and better things after serving under his tutelage for a time.  He was a blessing to his profession and the community he covered.

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety posted the Director of the Driver Services Bureau position on Facebook on January 25.  Apparently the position did not require one to be...... a Trooper.  Well, that didn't sit too well with someone.  

 In the wake of the recent congressionally adopted debt ceiling limit deal between Democratic President Joe Biden and Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated the bill would save taxpayers $1.5 trillion over 10 years.

Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Parker sued Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey and Rankin County Deputies Brett McAlpin, Hunter Elward, Christian Demond, and several John Doe deputies in U.S. District Court today for Section 1983 violations such as the use of excessive force and depriving the plaintiffs of their civil rights. The lawsuit accuses the deputies of torturing them as well as shooting one man in the mouth while they were handcuffed. The complaint seeks $400 million in damages.

The Jackson City Council held yet another clown show last week.  The City Council discussed the 2022 annual audit with past auditor Scott Hodges of Tann, Russ & Brown.  Instead of a serious discussion of city finances, what took place was a fount of foolishness as the Council asked if the audit would be finished by the end of the summer even though the city had not hired Mr. Hodges nor provided him with any financial information.

 Books, briefs, broadcasts, and blogs provide discourses galore on the growing concentration of wealth and power in America. Mississippi is not estranged from this trend. The transmogrification of the triumvirate of power that controls public policy and spending provides a good illustration.

What to do about the Mexican Drug Cartels is a rather bedeviling question.  American demand creates a tremendous opportunity for supply, ergo the rise of the Cartels and the fall of the Mexican state.  As Cartel brutality becomes more widespread, some of our Warhawks advocate using the military against the Cartels.  The idea is not without its attraction as the Cartels are undoubtedly no match for Special Forces and surgical weapons, right? However, there may be another side to this equation. Former infantryman Chris Cappy knows a little bit more about combat than the average Warhawk.  He discusses the pros and cons of taking military action against the Cartels in the video posted below.   Fix a drink or consume an edible and enjoy.
