 The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 1,845 cases of Wuhan virus and 1 death today.    The total number of cases is 153,270. The virus has caused 3,807 deaths.  Nursing home deaths comprise 40% of overall Covid-19 deaths in Mississippi. There are 128,746 recoveries.

 The staff at the state newspaper is about to shrink even more.  Jimmie Gates is retiring while Giacomo Bologna and Alissa Zhu are moving on to bigger and better things.  That leaves Justin Vicory and Luke Rasmeth as the workhorses with some copy thrown in by Keisha Rowe.  Ouch.

 Hinds County convicted killer Zebulum James, now Madison County gets its turn at trying him for murder today.   James went on a shooting spree in Jackson and Ridgeland in 2015, killing two people.  

 The Mississippi Highway Patrol issued the following statement. 

 Mississippi came close to breaking the 2,000 new cases of Covid-19 infections again yesterday.  The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 1,845 cases of Wuhan virus and 27 deaths yesterday.   However, 18 of the deaths took place between September and November.  The total number of cases is 151,785. The virus has caused 3,806 deaths.  Nursing home deaths comprise 40% of overall Covid-19 deaths in Mississippi. There are 121,637 recoveries.

The Cipher just dropped a lawsuit against the Reverend Daniel Hollins.  Neither party is any stranger to controversy.  It's Thanksgiving Day and I haven't had time to read all 43 pages of the complaint but if the first couple of pages are any indication, this lawsuit is going to be um, interesting to read.  Take off your mask, pour some egg nog, light up a cigar,  and commence to readin'.  

 A federal lawsuit claims a JPD supervisor pointed a loaded pistol at the head of a female detective when she asked him about an investigation.  Martha Dee sued Commander (Ret.) Donald Gater, JPD Chief James Davis, and the city of Jackson for sex discrimination and excessive force yesterday in U.S. District Court.  The complaint states:

This is the season of giving. We give gifts, we give of our time, and we give food. For decades, when Thanksgiving rolled around, I would volunteer my time at a soup kitchen, dishing up turkey and dressing for those less fortunate. Sometimes I’d donate a can or two from my home pantry for my church’s White Christmas canned food drive. But if I am to be completely honest, the cans were something that was usually old, possibly out of date, and most likely a food item I didn’t want. Occasionally, I would give a box of toys to an agency that made sure they got to kids in need. It wasn’t until I founded Extra Table that I realized that those in need of food are just as hungry in the spring, summer, and fall as they are around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Food insecurity doesn’t go away after New Year’s Day.

A Rankin Judge took the unusual step of filing a bar complaint against attorney Abby Robinson.  The Jackson lawyer accused Rankin County Court Judge Kent McDaniel of retaliation after she filed a complaint against him with the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance.

UMC Vice-Chancellor Dr. LouAnn Woodward said the Covid-19 crisis in Mississippi was the worst it has ever been as she advocated implementing a statewide mask mandate.  She said the hospital system has no more capacity and the state is quickly approaching a hospital crisis.  Watch her remarks in the video posted below.

Angeliqe Lee won Tuesday's election to replace Jackson Ward  2 City Councilman Melvin Priester, Jr..  However, the Northwest Jackson candidate voted in Ridgeland as recently as March.  

 Mississippi set a record in Wuhan virus cases yesterday.  The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 1,972 cases and 15 deaths yesterday.   The total number of cases is 142,401. The virus has caused 3,657 deaths. While cases and hospitalizations shoot upwards, the daily number of deaths remains relatively flat.

The noose continues to tighten for Gold Coast Commodities. The Mississippi Environmental Quality Permit Board revoked its permit to operate a wastewater lagoon near Pelahatchie last week.  The site is the source of a multitude of complaints, lawsuits, and MDEQ penalties as it produces noxious odors and hordes of flies that makes life unbearable at times for the neighbors.

 The Mississippi Department of Public Safety placed Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Mark LeVaughn on administrative leave last week.  DPS did not provide a reason for the suspension.  However, sawces tell JJ:

The Wall Street Journal reported professional athletes did not infect each other with Covid-19 while participating in  outdoor sports such as baseball.  Oddly enough, the biggest threat to players came not from contact on the field but rather from simple activities such as eating together.  The newspaper reviewed the effectiveness of Covid-19 protocols in professional sports leagues recently and gleaned a few lessons.  The Journal reported:

A scrum broke escalated into a war as the Medical Marijuana folks entered the fight between Madison and the Secretary of State over Initiative 65.  Mayor Mary and Madison asked the Mississippi Supreme Court to declare invalid the initiative's certification on the ballot.  The defendant Secretary of State fired back in court while Medical Marijuana supporters fired their own rounds at the petitioners.  Hanging in the balance is the fate of an initiative that passed with 74% of the vote.

 The racing community here in Jackson and nationwide suffered a grievous loss today.  Ridgeland's Jim Pace passed away today.  He suffered one brush with death on the race track earlier this year but the incident had nothing to do with his passing.  Historic Sportscar Racing honored him on its Facebook page:

 Governor Tate Reeves said he would "fight" any Biden administration attempts to shut down Mississippi's economy after some of Mr. Biden's Covid-19 advisers promoted a six-week massive national shut down.  Yahoo Finance News reported yesterday:

 A homicide took place on Cox Street in Jackson this week.  Naturally someone posted a video of the aftermath of the homicide on Facebook.  Check out the video as well as the comments on the videographer's Facebook page.  It appears no one would help the police nor the victim.  No one was upset.  It was just another day in the neighborhood.  Read the comments.  They are rather um, interesting.  

 Brandon High School will close until November 30 and educate all students through virtual learning.  Brandon sent out the following email to all parents.

 The wife of the late Warren Strain want to take his seat on the Madison Board of Aldermen.  Sandra Strain submitted her qualifying papers and signatures to the city of Madison today.

Once upon a time, legislators really did run the state government in Mississippi.  They didn't just cut the check.  They signed 'em, hired, and fired, and performed management duties as they sat on the various boards and commissions in state government.  The practice continued for nearly a hundred years until an intrepid Attorney General named Bill Allain said no.  The good ole boyz didn't like that so they decided to teach him a lesson. 

The Mississippi State Medical Association and Mississippi State Department of Health are having a bit of a row with Mississippi private schools over the reporting of Covid-19 cases.   

The internet has made everything sooooo convenient.  Once upon a time, dvds filled up the house.  However, just as dvd's replace videotapes, so did streaming services replace the now-bulky dvds. It's pretty easy.  It's a rainy day and you feel like watching the first two Godfather movies. Go to Prime, purchase the movie for $16.99, and voila, it is yours,  right?  A man who killed two motorcyclists on Highway 463 in 2018 will spend twenty years behind bars.  Madison County Circuit Judge John Emfinger sentenced James Devault, II Friday after he pleaded guilty to culpable negligence manslaughter.  The sentencing order states:

A Simpson County family sued  the Simpson County School District in U.S. District Court Monday after the school forced the 9 year-old daughter to stop wearing a mask that said "Jesus Loves Me."

 One of the more enjoyable Instagram pages is Historyphotographed.  It provides a plethora of interesting historical photos.  The proprietor of the account put up a rather simple message yesterday that encouraged people to be nice to each other after the election was over.  Unfortunately, encouraging people to be nice was deemed to be hateful and set off more than a few nutjobs.  See for yourself.

Dr. William Walker almost went back to prison after he failed to pay restitution yet again.  U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett revoked the former DMR Executive Director's probation for thirty days yesterday but stayed sending him back to prison if he immediately began paying $6,500 per month.

 American voters occupied themselves during the 2020 presidential and congressional campaign cycle, talking about COVID-19, the Amy Coney Barrett nomination to the Supreme Court, national social justice strife, and an uncertain economy.

 Sorry to be away from the website today.  Comcast decided to take a break this morning, or rather, the Comcast modem did.  Of course, a crown had to pop off so yours truly had to rush to the dentist  to get that fixed and then there was voting.  Nearly two hours spent waiting in line to cast that precious ballot.  Take a look at the pics below.

Hinds County Administrator Jennifer Riley-Collins resigned today.  The Board of Supervisors gave her the age-old question in executive session today: resign or be terminated.  She chose resignation.  

The presidential race tops ballots filled with other candidates and issues deemed important enough to merit a vote by the people. Voters like to believe we have a voice in government. Too many times in 2020 we’ve seen candidates at the federal level along with mayors and governors exercising authority voters did not give to them.

 The Queen caught the Mississippi political world by surprise when she asked the Mississippi Supreme Court to block the certification of the I65 referendum that will take place Tuesday.   She claimed the Secretary of State's certification of the initiative's signatures violated the Mississippi Constitution.  The Attorney General gave cover to the certification in a 2009 opinion.  <i>JJ</i> covered the lawsuit last week.  Perhaps it's time to delve into the opinion itself.
