Governor Tate Reeves issued the following statement on signing a bill to replace the state flag.

Growing up in New Jersey, we were taught to respond to the Confederate Battle Flag as we would to a sewer rat. History, according to the public school system, was pretty simple- the North was good and not racist, the South was bad and racist.

While we are tearing ourselves down, the Chinese and Indians are having a bit of a go at it halfway around the world.   Officers gave orders not to shoot at a confrontation that occurred in May.  The troops followed their orders to the letter only too well as you can see in the video posted below.

Crime does indeed pay in Jackson.  Hinds County District Attorney asked Circuit Judge Adrienne Wooten to revoke the bond of a first degree murder suspect even though he later participated in a shootout and is the subject of an ATF investigation for looting a gun store.  Judge Wooten denied the request and kept his bond at $20,000.

The War for Culley Lake wound down last week as a Madison Judge fined Ray Phelps for assaulting a woman at a Natchez Trace Village HOA Board meeting last year.  A civil war of sorts has been taking place in Natchez Trace Village over the last few years.  It is rather generational in nature as an old guard has pulled every trick in the book to remain in power on the HOA board.   The two sides have fought in court with the old guard losing every step of the way.  Matters came to a head last year at the annual HOA Board meeting on June 27, 2019.  The police report states:

COVID-19 cases in Mississippi continue apace, with well over 200 new cases a day, and Hinds and Madison counties leading the State with the most cases. Fortunately health care workers have improved treatment techniques since the crisis began so that, according to a recent report of a study in the Wall Street Journal, “after adjusting for age and comorbidities, the overall death rate declined by some 40% from March to April.” Still, we are mindful of incidents that make us wary where peer pressure among friends may mean they are not wearing masks: like the funeral in the hamlet of Baldwyn, Mississippi where 100 attended and 9 ended up infected; or Dr. Dobb’s tale of the hand of cards dealt among friends where everyone left the table with the virus.

At Saturday’s Starkville Unity March and subsequent rally on the campus of Mississippi State University, I watched and listened. I saw local white merchants bringing cases of bottled water and local white-owned restaurants dropping off food for organizers and the police. I saw many white business leaders, bankers, and civic club members participating in the march and staying for the rally.

Thanks to the COVID-19 coronavirus, we see many things today more fragile, more susceptible to breaking, than ever before. Many were made that way by our false sense of invulnerability.

To say the withdrawal of an indictment against a white Columbus police officer accused of killing a black suspect generated some outrage is putting it mildly.  Attorney General Lynn Fitch dismissed with prejudice a manslaughter indictment against former Columbus police officer Canyon Boykin earlier this week.  The timing was not exactly stellar as the decision took place while protests against police brutality rage across America.  Boykin's attorney, Jeff Reynolds, stepped up to the plate and defended his client yesterday. 

A night of terror took place in Ridgeland and Jackson last night as two men kidnapped a man and then robbed his parents. 

Geoff Pender jumped over  to Mississippi Today.  He must have gotten tired of the abuse and said enough was enough.  How much longer will it be until the "state newspaper" shuts down or stops publishing a print edition? Inquiring minds want to know.

The Clinton Police Department issued the following statement. 

Perhaps it's time to look at the actual facts where Covid-19 and children are concerned.  A debate rages whether to reopen the schools.  Believe it or not, children brush off the virus. No children have died of Covid-19 in Mississippi. Other state report similar results.   There have been only 967 cases of children under the age of 18, a staggering 6% of all cases in Mississippi.  Only 27 children have been hospitalized,  l% of all Covid-19 hospitalizations.  See for yourself.

More than 15 years ago, under Dr. Dan Jones, University of Mississippi Health Care (variously known as UMC, UMMC, UMHC, “University”) began an elaborate and expensive expansion campaign designed to move UMHC away from inner-city, poorly-paying patients to more lucrative private insurance patients in order to better manage its budget. This expansion has included a sophisticated multi-million dollar advertising campaign aimed at “branding” UMHC as the medical institution with care superior to care at non-UMHC hospitals and clinics. The plan has included extensive land acquisition around UMHCʼs main campus, and the building/renting of expansive primary care clinics in Flowood and Madison designed to compete directly with non-UMHC physicians in the Jackson area for privately insured, “bread-and-butter” patients.

Madison County nursing homes are suffering the most severe Covid-19 outbreaks in the Jackson metro area. The Mississippi State Department of Health released a list of infected long term care facilities today as well as statistics for each facility. Nursing home deaths comprise 52% of all Covid-19 fatalities in Mississippi.

Hinds County Court Judge Melvin Priester, Sr. resigned his position today. He submitted a letter of resignation that states he could no longer continue "due to my physical condition."

The Mississippi Department of Health will start posting the names of nursing homes suffering Covid-19 outbreaks tomorrow.  MSDH stated in a press release today:

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 268 new cases of the Wuhan Virus as well as 28 deaths today. The total number of cases is 15,752. The virus has caused 767 deaths. Nursing home deaths comprise 51% of overall Covid-19 deaths in Mississippi. There are 11,203 recoveries.  More information and a complete list of infected counties can be found at the MSDH website.
