JJ obtains complete video of controversial traffic stop and arrest.
The video of 2019 Clay County traffic stop tells a completely different story than the short video that smeared two MHP troopers in the national media two years ago.
MHP troopers Brandon Berry and James Scott arrested Robert Morton and his fiance, Porsha Shields on July 12, 2019 on U.S. 45a in Clay County. They charged Morton with speeding - going more than 20 mph over the speed limit, resisting arrest, malicious mischief, disorderly conduct, and violating the child restraint law. Shields was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
Shields recorded part of the arrest and posted the video on Facebook. The two-minute video showed the two troopers manhandling Morton as they tried to arrest him. The troopers were white while Morton and Shields are black.
The video went viral, garnering millions of hits as it was widely shared. A four-minute video also surfaced that showed Berry telling Morton he was speeding at 101 mph. However, the shorter video that went viral conveniently left out that important piece of information.
A video receiving millions of hits guaranteed the media would jump on the story and jump it did. Atlanta Black Star reported Horton tried to comply but the troopers were soooo mean to him and Shields.
Morton said he was getting his license when the deputy asked him to get out of the car and Morton complied.
“I stepped out the car. That’s all,” Morton said. “That’s all.”...
She told the media company Scott choked and slammed her against a vehicle even though she explained she was pregnant.... Article
Other media such as The Huffington Post, NBC News, the Daily Mail, and minor websites covered the story but tended to follow the narrative of two white Mississippi troopers roughing up a black man over speeding. They just can't help themselves, sometimes. Some media outlets such as the Daily Mail went further and conveniently omitted Berry's statement that Horton was driving at 101 mph even though they had the longer video.
Enter Carlos the Clown. The Grenada attorney and Horton appeared on CNN's Roland Martin Show to discuss the arrest. The actual speed was never mentioned on the show. Martin, Moore, and Horton made it sound as if the Mississippi Highway Patrol brutalized Horton just because he was a black man driving a few miles over the speed limit. To their credit, attorneys A. Scott Bolden and Monique Pressley rejected the use of the race card and defended the troopers as Martin played the video.
Unfortunately, the Clarion-Ledger didn't even cover the story until Carlos Moore dog-whistled the newspaper a month later. JJ reported on August 23, 2019:
The "state newspaper" finally got around to covering a controversial video of a Mississippi Highway Patrol arrest. JJ posted the video on July 14 and the police report on July 25. The video is posted below. The "state newspaper" couldn't be bothered to report the video until Wednesday - after Carlos Moore announced he was going to sue MHP over the arrest. Suddenly the Clarion-Ledger and a State Representative jumped into action as they performed their roles of trained seals for Carlos the Clown. Earlier post. ...
Then there is the matter of sloppy reporting on the "two-minute" video. The reporter was more concerned with how popular the video was than what was actually on the video. The shorter video is the one that first went viral on social media. It was manipulated to provide sympathy for the suspect because it left out the crucial part where the trooper states Morton was driving 101 mph and that he wouldn't provide his driver's license. However, facts and honest journalism be damned when the narrative sought is one of white cops abusing a black suspect in Mississippi - and THAT is what the Clarion-Ledger's story is all about.
The newspaper didn't even mention the speed in the front-page story until near its end on 7A.
None of the so-called media outlets followed the story after the initial reporting. They did not report Horton was convicted in Clay County Justice Court of all charges nor did they report Carlos the Clown never sued anyone over the arrest. Shades of the Belhaven vindication ignored by the media.
Long-time JJ readers know what is coming next. JJ filed a public records request for the complete video of the traffic stop and arrest. The video posted below shows a completely different story than what was reported by the media.
The video opens with a MHP trooper pulling over not one but two vehicles. One vehicle is speeding at 90 mph while Horton flew even faster at 101 mph in a 65 mph zone. Berry first notices no one in Horton's car is wearing seatbelts, including the four year-old child in the back seat.
The trooper first deals with the car that was going 90 mph. The driver only had a military ID. Berry told him to stay put and walked over to Horton's car. Berry immediately asked Horton for his driver's license but Horton refused to comply as he kept asking why Berry pulled him over. The two men engaged in a verbal tug of war as the Berry repeatedly asked for the license while Horton asked over and over why he was pulled over. Berry finally had enough of the sparring and told Horton to get out of the car. Horton exited the vehicle.
Berry promptly told him to put his hands on top of his head, informing him he was under arrest. Horton began screaming as a woman got out of the passenger's side and began haranguing (I've been waiting to use that word in a post) the trooper. They both demanded to know why Horton was under arrest while Berry repeatedly tells Horton to put his hands over his head and interlock his fingers. Horton resisted more and more. He didn't attack the trooper but instead kept forcefully pulling his hands and body away every time Berry attempted to handcuff him.
An exasperated trooper finally told Horton "if you don't want to get tased, get on the f*****g ground." as a cacophony of female shrieks erupted in the background. Instead of tasing him next, Berry said "give me your hands", upon which Horton put his hands up in the air. When Berry tried to grap his hands in the upright position, Horton would immediately and quickly lower them to his waist so as to avoid handcuffing. All of Horton's actions were intended to either avoid any restraint or give the law enforcement officer his driver's license. (Everyone on the Roland Martin show as well as several reporters confused the taser for a firearm. Moore and Horton didn't bother to correct Martin and his guests on the air.).
The debate session continued until a second trooper appeared seven minutes after Berry first asked Horton for his license. The trooper immediately jumped out of his cruiser and promptly ended the debate session. He ordered Horton to immediately put his hands behind his back. The two troopers wrassled Horton to the ground as Horton refused to yield, pushing back with all of his might despite being tased. A handcuffed Horton resisted getting into the cruiser as he fought lowering his head.
What took place that day is a far cry from what Horton and Shields told the Atlanta Black Star. Read it again:
Morton said he was getting his license when the deputy asked him to get out of the car and Morton complied.
“I stepped out the car. That’s all,” Morton said. “That’s all.”...
She told the media company Scott choked and slammed her against a vehicle even though she explained she was pregnant.
Keep in mind that another driver is behind Berry during most of the scuffling with Morton. While Berry and later Scott dealt with Morton, they had to hope the other driver would behave.
The troopers next arrested Shields, who suddenly started asking the troopers to please stop placing her under arrest because she was pregnant. Once that ploy failed, she said her child was in the back seat. Berry gently asked the child if he was ok. The child was not wearing a seatbelt nor was he in a child-safety seat. A relative later took custody of the child at the Clay County Sheriff's office.
Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tyndall said "Our Troopers are trained to uphold the highest standards of integrity and respect while serving and protecting the public – often while putting their own lives in danger. Thankfully, media outlets like Jackson Jambalaya show the public that a select glimpse of an encounter with law enforcement does not always offer the complete story."

It's no surprise that people driving 101 on a two-land highway, with an unrestrained 4 year old in the back, would lie about what happened. It's the press' job to sort through the BS to get to the facts. They failed. Good work, KF.
Listen up Kingfish, nobody asked plus you are white.
Clearly the Mississippi Bar has no interest in either halting or mitigating the ridiculous conduct of Carlos the clown. They are as much to blame as he is if not more. I cannot fathom how this idiot still has a Bar card.
Nice work.
And the media who monetized and benefitted from the lies that screamed racism will remain utterly silent on the clarification and keep laughing as they cash those racist checks.
Why didn't MHP release this footage earlier ? Woke ?
Now if only Kingfish can get to the bottom of the MS State Capitol Noose conspiracy that the local and national media breathlessly reported about until the FBI determined who hung the nooses and then…. crickets.
Most agencies won't release such video until case is adjudicated.
MHP wouldn't release it under previous leadership. New management more open with press.
Lord knows I couldn’t be a state trooper because I would’ve tased dumbass as soon as he pulled away from me. The second trooper should’ve manhandled him exactly the way he did. Who has time to playing with this dumbass? And the woman in the passenger seat is just as dumb as the driver. If you know you’re clearly speeding then why are you acting brain dead?
Roland Martin and Attorney Moore are cowards. Anyone scared to tell the truth is a coward.
I hope the troopers are still on the job. By the book.
It appears some credit is due to the apparently respectful driver who is waiting his turn.
Yo Kingfish… that’s PRESIDENT of the National Bar Association (or Judge) Carlos Moore to you.
do this shit make u white boys feel big & powerful cuz we see u bitches scared to even look us in the eye at fuckin walmart same goes for you jamie you the biggest lil bitch in the city
Great job KF!
This video adds a tremendous amount of info over the short one all over the internet.
One thing I will never understand is why people argue with the police and start this kind of shit. The drivers and passengers actions were utterly foolish and driven by a hatred of law enforcement. Of course, we see who won.
My lesson from this is keep your mouth shut and cooperate with the officer. This thing could have sure enough gotten out of hand without the quick backup response of the second officer.
Hey, 1:14, come look into my eye. I dare you.
Truth will prevail. Not everyone is racists, but mainstream media loves the underdog minority and somehow always leaves out the whole story. At least, While they can.
@1:14
Your comment shows how low class you are. Weren't you raised to have some respect for others? When you act like an animal, you get treated like one.
@1:14p- That's the mentality that thinks this behavior is acceptable and (worse) necessary. It's truly not.
Your mother/father/grandparents should have taught you better. You should have more respect for yourself and your family. All you seem to care about is saying shit and bitch.
The truth is, had the guy not been speeding excessively, and everyone had been wearing their seatbelts, the troopers would not have even bothered them. That's the truth that your type never want to admit to. You prefer the scenario where someone attacked you for no reason. WAKE UP!!
@1:03p- His work is not worthy of EITHER of those "titles."
Why are SOME people so hung up on titles??
I am confused about these comments. Why is it racist to expose a black racist?
This story may add some context to the earlier story about the Detroit officer who saw the drive-by shooting and just turned around and left. Who in their right mind wants to be the next Derrick Chauvin?
12:19... That's why he's the Kingfish. Guardian of the Universe protector of the Galaxy and scourge of corruption!
1:14 has to be a troll, no way it's a real person/opinion that also can login and post to a website...
Steroids at it’s finest lol. These fools have anger issues because they shooting up those roids and can’t control the side effects.
And this is a lesson in how you turn a ticket into an arrest. He was going to let them go with a ticket, even though going 20+ over. Had they just acted like a human being instead of an animal, they would have left with just a piece of paper. But no.....let's act like a fool.
I believe this scenario proves why no one believes the media anymore.
I first saw the original version of this video(shortened and from the other perspective) so I knew what the end result would be. This video however, HORRIFIED ME! MHP needs to retrain this young officer yesterday. He presented his FULL CHEST to the first vehicle and then STUCK HIS HEAD IN THE WINDOW!!!!!. Even knowing what was going to happen, my heart stuck in my throat as I waited for someone to shoot him square in the chest or pull him into the vehicle and drag him down the road.
In addition to this, he clearly has a Billy Badass attitude that only escalated the situation. Was the officer wrong? NO. Did he handle this stop well or safely? HELL NO. More remedial training is needed here because the officer could have been very dead. Use this video MHP. Use it to train others what NOT TO DO.
As Paul Harvey used to say: “And now you know the rest of the story “.
Well, I'm shocked, shocked I say.
1:14 and 3:02 shame on both of you. If the 4 yo had been killed MHP would still have been blamed for not pulling him over. We are blessed to live in a nation that even has any late enforecement left. Try that crap in Europe, Germany or anywhere else and see where you would be!
Somebody would have to be mighty damned bored to read all that shit.
@12:05, unless this happened overseas, the lot of em, trooper included, should be hauled in for reckless endangerment driving at excessive speeds on the wrong side of the road. Oh wait, I see a median and cars on the other side headed in the opposite direction.
1. Dude is doing 101 in a 65 and is practically apoplectic that the trooper had the nerve to pull him over.
2. These things seem to go south when the female sidekick gets aggressive, which tends to be within the first 3-5 seconds.
If the guy was clocked at 101 mph he was going to jail whether he resisted or not. If an MHP trooper would have let someone clocked at 101 go with just a ticket he would lose his badge and end up working for another agency.
Carlos Moore's facebook page is nothing but him sniffing his farts in a wine glass. Jesus, that man loves him some Carlos like Jim Acosta loves him some Jim Acosta.
So......at the 14:30 mark in the video, the Trooper says "get out of here" to the driver of the black toyota that he clocked doing 90 mph, resisted pulling over at least twice, not wearing a seat belt and had no valid drivers license. Talk about HIS lucky day!
@1:14 I got your lil bitch right here Come on to Rankin County son
Conversation in the back of the car on the way to the jail: “Baby, in the future, please remember that I can go to jail all by myself. I don’t need a woman’s help going to jail.”
The criminal in this video will see nothing wrong with his behavior until the day the dies.
And he will likely meet his demise due to other illegal activity that he will see no reason to avoid.
His culture and his society will support, encourage and defend his blatant disregard for laws and will canonize him in death.
Welcome to insane world, aka America.
You are 100% correct 8:36
At least 8:38 has some sense. Both drivers should’ve been arrested.
5:01 That's not what he implied... you're a little slow.
Porsha has since Married someone else.
So he isn't going to cash in on the lottery afterall?
