Michael Barone: Joe's Big Lie

Did you know that Black people are not going to be allowed to vote in America anymore? At least in states controlled by Republicans. Sounds a bit unlikely, but that's a conclusion you might have come to if you took seriously what President Joe Biden said in Philadelphia Tuesday.

Biden decried Republicans' proposed changes in election laws as "the 21st century Jim Crow assault" that tries "to suppress and subvert the right to vote in fair and free elections, an assault on democracy."

This is, to be polite, unhinged nonsense.

Biden is old enough to remember what real Jim Crow voter suppression was like. It meant zero Black people voting in places like Mississippi. It meant threats and violence against Black people who tried to register to vote. It meant unfair application of literacy tests and poll taxes.

Requiring voters to present photo ID is nothing like this: Large majorities think it's reasonable. Measures such as reducing the number of pre-election voting days in Georgia (there are zero in Biden's Delaware) or ending pandemic-inspired measures like drive-through voting in Harris County, Texas, are not the same. Not even close.

Early in his speech, Biden denounced "the big lie," a reference to Donald Trump's claims that he actually won the 2020 election. But Biden's Jim Crow charge is an even clearer instance of the big lie -- and a more dangerous one -- since it's unlikely to be fact-checked by most media. If you want people to condemn a big lie, don't tell one yourself.
In his criticism of Trump, Biden invoked a long-standing norm of American politics.

"In America, if you lose, you accept the results. You follow the Constitution. You try again. You don't call the facts 'fake' and then try to bring down the American experiment just because you're unhappy."

He spoke these words, apparently unaware that they could be applied to him and his own party.

You might not understand this if your only news sources were the New York Times or CNN. But if you try to look at it, as Darryl Cooper does in the leftist Glenn Greenwald's Substack, you might recall that Hillary Clinton and other Democrats did not accept the results of 2016 election and spent months advancing the Russia collusion hoax to delegitimize and end the Trump presidency.

"We now know," Cooper wrote, "that the FBI and other intelligence agencies conducted covert surveillance against members of the Trump campaign based on evidence manufactured by political operatives working for the Clinton campaign, both before and after the election."

He went on: "We know that those involved with the investigation knew that accusations of collusion were part of a campaign 'approved by Hillary Clinton... to vilify Donald Trump by stirring up a scandal claiming interference by the Russian security service."

As Cooper noted, for months, many Trump supporters worried that there might be substance to the Russia collusion charges. Democrats insisted there was. News media like the NYT and CNN ignored or ridiculed efforts by the likes of House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes to show there was nothing there.

Nunes was right, as became apparent when special counsel Robert Mueller admitted in his report -- and in his pathetic performance on Capitol Hill -- that he had no evidence of collusion. But the Times and other papers didn't return the Pulitzers they won for their Russia collusion stories.

The Times' executive editor Dean Baquet acknowledged in an angry newsroom meeting: "The day Bob Mueller walked off the witness stand... [o]ur readers who want Donald Trump to go away suddenly thought, 'Holy s---, Bob Mueller is not going to do it.'" As a result, "We're a little tiny bit flat-footed. I mean, that's what happens when a story looks a certain way for two years." "A little tiny bit flat-footed," translated into English, means "dead wrong."

Have Baquet or other news media leaders confessed error for their misjudgments? Have any Democrats who pursued the Russia collusion hoax like Inspector Javert confessed error? Not that I've seen.

Back in January, I wrote that Trump's words to the Jan. 6 crowd "were uttered with a reckless disregard that they'd provoke violence that any reasonable person could find impeachable."

But calls for comity and confession of error are unpersuasive coming from people who haven't shown comity or confessed error themselves.

Democrats who want to restore respect for the electoral process need to stop calling harmless changes in election laws "voter suppression" and a return to Jim Crow. They and their media protectors need to apologize for their years-long campaign to delegitimize Donald Trump's presidency by advancing a baseless hoax.

It really is all about projection isn’t it? Mueller found multiple instances of coordination with Russians….manafort gates stone et al were all charged and convicted of a myriad of crimes related to the 2016 election. Just a moment ago trumps friend barrack was arrested and put in jail for pimping the UAE and actually changing lines in Trump speeches for benefit of UAE. Google it. That is collusion and this isn’t over and that came from Mueller investigation.

But…There is no real question some states (Ga Tx Az) are trying to pass laws making it more difficult for citizens to vote in elections. Reduced areas, methods, and days. Is it coincidental that Rs control every state trying to increase burdens on would be voters? Jim Crow laws made it illegal to stand on a corner and blacks were standing on a corner…to jail they went and with a felony they didn’t get to vote. It was quite simple. Texas seeks to impose felonies on people who help others register to vote. How is that an American value? Do you see how making it a felony to help someone register to vote Is similar to Jim Crow making it illegal to stand on a corner? Is that comparison too complicated? It could well be too complicated for the willfully blind.

The psy ops warfare being administered in this country via social media is fascinating and scary to watch.

Up until today 35% of the population was told not to get a vaccine by opinion hosts at Fox. Now all opinion hosts (save Carlson) are asking the 35% to get a vaccine. What happened? Did Rs realize that serious illness and death of their listeners was bad? What do the families of the dead who listened to opinion hosts and failed to get vaccines do now? Should they seek revenge on the opinion hosts for killing their loved ones? The owners for allowing such lies to permeate? Who knows but I bet something happens to them and it won’t be good. And this is exactly the point of the psy ops war….pitting Americans v Americans.

And by the way….Rs killed and maimed police officers in DC on 1/6/21. It’s not debatable. If you say you don’t care or deny those facts then you are a part of the problem.

Yes they should apologize to the American people and to Trump but they won’t democrats simply move on to the next lie believing America should just take their worthless words!

Voter id isn't racist. If it was you wouldn't see new black gun owner records
being broken. If only voting was as 'easy as buying guns.

The special counsel found that Russia did interfere with the election, but “did not find that the Trump campaign, or anyone associated with it, conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in these efforts, despite multiple efforts from Russian-affiliated individuals to assist the Trump campaign.” That means "not guilty" to any factually challenged Democrats, which means all of them.

The biggest part of the problem, is you're so full of shit your eyes are brown. In your indoctrinated mind, all the looting, burning, and rampaging carried out last year was perfectly fine. The damn grasping at straws your kind do, to keep from admitting you're wrong, is amazing.

A burden on the poor, pitiful voter. Your kind are stuck in a time warp. You need to check your calendar, this isn't the 1960s. Jim Crow is long gone. Once again, in your little indoctrinated mind, you fantasize about coming to rescue someone from evil white people. Climbing aboard the bus with the freedom riders. That time is long gone. Everyone can see, but the willfully blind.

Trump didn’t get impeached twice because he was innocent. He survive the many cases against him to come, because he will even sell out Ivanka to save his on skin. He is not even as brave as Jim Jones.

Honk. Honk. Honk.

Fraud is typically hard to prove in a court of law, but the democrats might've out done themselves on this one.

"Is it coincidental that Rs control every state trying to increase burdens on would be voters?" -7:01

Is it coincidental that D's control every state that tries to increase the likelihood that the voting processes can be corrupted?

Its pretty simple. One Party would like less voters and One party would like more voters. And if you're in a party that has won the popular vote once in the last 32 years, its pretty clear you NEED less voters.

Personally, i think voting should be easy. I think its reasonable to require voter ID. But I also don't think its great policy to have no access to early voting, or that voting is on a Tuesday. I shouldn't have to wait in line 2 hours in Rankin County to cast a vote. Imagine what its like in an actually populated place.

Politics 101.1 Delegitimize the election BEFORE you lose. Trump declared the election stolen almost a full year before it happened. They stole that election. Never again! The Democrats are looking forward to huge setbacks in the midterms. They are basically doing the same thing. Jim Crow is stealing votes. Never again! Same thing. It sets the groundwork for a comeback in 2024. It's all predictable. Politics is a game and the voters are the pawns.

If voting is the valued commodity, so many claim it to be, shouldn't it be protected as any other priceless object is? Shouldn't safeguards be put into place to make sure the priceless object isn't abused?

I could produce a long list of activities that require an identification to participate in, one of which would be to buy beer. Some people would have a greater burden of proof to buy beer than to vote. Tell me again, how valuable is the right to vote?

Last November, we waited 2 hrs in line on a warm/hot, sunny afternoon at Christ United Church to vote. As a side show, we had our goofball 'radical' mayor trying (unsuccessfully) to hand out donuts.

Trying to prevent a demented, Obamunist houseplant from being president was worth two hours in line declining donuts from an idiot.

With the proof that the election was rigged and Democrats dying on the "no it wasn't" hill even though they claimed as much when Hillrod and Fat Stacy lost.......it's safe to assume it will happen again in 2022. Considering what Uncle Joe and Auntie Kamala have already done to destroy us.....2022 should be an easy win for ANY Republican. Moderate, Conservative or other. They can't allow that. THIS is why they are crying so hard about an ID. Doesn't matter that EVERYONE LEGAL in this country has to have one to do ANYTHING important. And having illegal Jose vote for them is important. To them. FIGHT.

This is where you find the sore losers. It’s so pathetic they can’t get people to vote for an incompetent candidate so what do they do, put up barriers to vote. This will backfire on Redumblicans . Both by hindering their voters and energizing the opposition. They are only 30% of the vote, independents are 40%. Between the insurrection and these voter suppression laws they are going to either not vote or vote for Democrats.

Anonymous said...

@10:02, what is the proof the election was rigged? Not a single court has found any.

As someone on the slightly liberal side of the fence, I do not have a problem with voter ID, however, I think that ID that can be used for voting should be free of charge. I do have a problem with removing early voting, reducing polling places, and other ideas that make voting more difficult or inconvenient.

Anonymous said...

So, a voter ID should be free? If I have need to go to a doctor, when I present my insurance cards, they also require an ID for that. That ID shouldn't be free?

Joe Biden has done no more than to state the obvious. Most Democratic voters will have difficulty obtaining an ID or remembering the complicated information required to apply for one; correct name, address, date of birth etc. we are not all rocket scientists you know. And we are obviously underfed so it's inhumane not to feed us in those long, long, voting lines. How about all the court room dramas, and soap operas and other daytime T.V. we will miss without weekend voting? And having to drive all across country to drop off a ballot? Maybe a mile or more! Get real! And if I shot my neighbor over that can of beer I don't get to vote anymore? Ridiculous! Right Joe, It's Jim Crow all over again!

Kingfish said...

Yup. That's what we need. Unlimited, unrestrained ballot harvesting as they had in California. Want so see corrupt elections? Allow that to happen.

I can see it now, Bennie's or Antar's goons going door to door telling people to give them their ballots for the drop box. Union thugs making membership and their families come to the union hall to drop off their ballots. Of course, right-wing activists who are not so reputable or ethical will engage in the same practices. Say so long to secret ballot.

Just like the stupid idea to allow voting by phone. Yeah, that's right. You're 20 and living at home. You vote one way, your parents vote another. Parents tell you to vote on your phone in front of them and you better vote the right way. Or apply that to spouses. One spouse tells another the same thing. No pressure at all.

KF, I would wager the second commenter (7:01) is on a Democratic payroll in some manner. You musta hit a nerve son.

So the elections in California were corrupt with voter fraud. I know you of all people Kingfish can provide the information that proves it. Otherwise you are no better than Rudy!

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
