Southern Miss Who?

Notice anything missing from the sports page on the Clarion-Ledger website?

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles made the finals of the Sun Belt Conference baseball tournament but one wouldn't know it from reading the home sports page on the "state" newspaper's website.  The Golden Eagles face Coastal Carolina today.

Don't bother looking for coverage of either Ole Miss or USM's success in today's newspaper edition either.  Even though the games ended Saturday afternoon, there is no mention of them in the Clarion-Ledger.  Pitiful.  Just pitiful.

You need to look at all the empowerment and clarity The C-L brings.
That more than makes up for the lack of news!

It's not an accident, it's a plan!

Really, isn't this stuff what all the remaining subscribers want?

It’s hard to describe how terrible the coverage of southern miss is with the clarion ledger. Pathetic. They lost LSU scores more than southern miss. It’s horrible

1:01 Of course it's a plan. It's no longer very profitable for the big boys to invest in local print news media so sell something else. Something less expensive but "socially relevant". That's especially true in semi -literate small markets. Get your local sports elsewhere.

For whatever reason Mississippi doesn't see USM as a real university. And yet they beat the mighty Bear Bryant and Alabama that year

Notice how thin the sports section is. Four pages on a Sunday.

The large majority of the people The Clarion-Ledger thinks it is helping don’t read the publication or any other news. All they read is useless social media garbage.

I never followed sports that much but I did go to USM, and am used to it being a non-issue except for gloating from the northern universities when they beat "Hardy High"...I do remember from my days delivering the Clarion Ledgers' Sunday comics being "20 BIG PAGES OF FUN".

I remember a running argument I had with a CL apologist. The sum of his argument was, "We are big. We are powerful. Just say, 'thank you, may I have another.' We do what we want and there is nothing you can do about it."

Guess what big boy. People did something about it. I shed no tears for the CL's death.

It used to take me a couple days to read the Sunday clarion ledger cover to cover now it takes 30 minutes and most of that is in the comics. Sad days

This has been going on since the late 80’s. Pathetic coverage that thinks JSU is a D1 school.

F the CL.

It’s been intentionally done since David The Clown Hampton was there.

F David Hampton too.

Kingfish: This one sicko mentions jews all the time even when they aren’t related to the topic

Also Kingfish: Why does everything suck so much? Who is responsible for all of this? There is no way this is more than a cohencidence?!

Old miss is all this paper knows and most of the TV stations also

Big Media sports snobs. I am glad, however, to know this. And I wouldn’t have since I dropped my Clarion-Error subscription back in 2001 after their coverage of a different issue that is no longer to be mentioned by Big Media and The Powers That Be (but I repeat myself).

News has never been more real time or accessible than it is now. Unfortunately I keep running from echo chamber to echo chamber trying to find the middle.

Where is USM located. I have only lived in Mississippi with my family for 3 years?

"Where is USM located. I have only lived in Mississippi with my family for 3 years?" Down in Happyburg/Hattiesburg! Great city!

No aspect of modern life in this country has been a bigger victim of the incompetence of DEI than the news/newspaper business, especially where Gannett is the owner. Haven't wasted my time on CL in years.

I'm sorry your family chose Mississippi. You're one of maybe six residents who have no farkin' idea how to use a search engine. Condolences to 'your family'.

Yeah, it sucks that the C-L blows off USM even though they have a nationally respected baseball program, but the C-L has bigger issues than a Sports Section that is not big enough to cover my cat's litter box.

Haven't read it on years.

Never heard anyone say that. They are real enough. Just a few minutes ago it was announced they are getting one of the 16 host sites in baseball regionals this year. I don't suppose that will get Clarion Ledger attention, though.

The Clarion Ledger had a quick 20 year period when it almost became a credible newspaper actually covering most of the local news and sports. Before, it was a one-sided racist rag ignoring or belittling half the population while representing the ruling good ole boys. Now, it has become a half-ass pamphlet belittling the whole state and representing those who have no interest in Mississippi or it's actual news. But there was a moment in time.....just a moment.

This lack of Southern Miss coverage is why I cancelled my subscription.

The Clarion Ledger is a bad paper. On that, there is no debate. I subscribe still to the digital edition because it is cheap and I still like the Ole Miss beat writer Sam Hutchens, who does a good job on Twitter and covering the team on line. However, if I were USM, where two of my kids graduated from, I would certainly be upset with no coverage, especially the way the baseball team has been playing. Kudos to them for getting a regional also, along with Ole Miss.

The Sun Herald covers USM. You should subscribe to both Gannett papers.

Corporations own most all our sources of information. They are for profit and one of the largest isn't owned by Americans.

Anonymous said...

They never cover non-SEC here because they own the Hattiesburg Commarican. They think that's statewide coverage. Both are a joke.

The dozens of mustard buzzard fans are outraged!

it's a scandal, the C-L's ignoring Southern baseball. Put Mitchell on it. He will unerringly dig up the racial angle on it and blow the whole thing wide open. Can you make your mouth say "Pulitzer"?

Anonymous said...

The Clarion Ledger would report on an Ole Miss loss rather than any other school’s win. I’ve seen it happen many times before.

Anonymous said...

When was the last time CL reported any sports news about Millsaps, Belhaven or MC? Much less Alcorn, Valley, or Delta State? And forget about Community College sports.

Anonymous said...

@11:20 - a better question is why do any of those schools even have sports teams?

Anonymous said...

Remember when Rick Cleveland wrote for them?

He sucked then. He still sucks now, over at MS Today.

I always roll my window up when riding past Hardy Street High. They typically try to throw a diploma through the window based on past work experience...

Anonymous said...

A 'four page sports section'? At least that's what you suggest. You might want to revise.

You still have 'roll-up' windows and expect credibility? Thump out that butt and light another.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.

Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices.
