State Auditor Shad White struck out in his efforts to get Brett Favre's defamation suit against him at the Mississippi Supreme Court last week.
Mr. Favre sued the State Auditor in 2023 for defamation in Hinds County Circuit Court. The football legend took issue with Mr. White's social media posts as well as allegations made in his clawback lawsuit against Mr. Favre for payments related to the DHS scandal.
Mr. White asked the Court to dismiss the case. However, Circuit Judge Debra Gibbs denied the motion. Undeterred, the State Auditor appealed to the Mississippi Supreme Court but the Court said no dice. Justice Kenneth Griffis decreed:
Thus the trench warfare will continue in Hinds County Circuit Court .

Ole Shadrack going to have to go to trial cause he don’t have enough money to buy Brett off. It’s going to be interesting!
I hope shad runs for governor
Hopefully he'll lose a round when he runs for governor too. I liked him at first, but he's too braggadocios. If he would just do his job instead of blasting it all over social media and even writing a book about it (while still in office), he would get a lot more respect.
Shadrack is going to get money-whipped by Favre.
Shad "You're a liar!" White
Luckily for Shad he's not paying the legal bills!
The Netflix doc coming out on 5/20 doesn’t look good for Bret
No press release by Auditor Shadrack yet on this important development for the taxpayers of Mississippi?
KF I can tell you aren’t an angler or outdoorsman. There are so many great fishing jokes that can be made with the name “Shad”
Or perhaps you just dont want to bite the hand that feeds (ad revenue)
Will Pheel Bryant be the star witness?
Made for tv special on Hinds Circuit livestream
What's the point of making jokes about a joke?
Sad day when those that have taken our money are going to get away with it and not be prosecuted.
Shad didn't rack up a win this time.
IANAL - If Shad loses this lawsuit who has to pay? The taxpayers or Shad personally?
If Shad is arresting Mississippi's crooks who steal from the taxpayer (well he's arresting perhaps only some of them) wouldn't he have qualified immunity like the police do?
I found the book to be very informative and enjoyable. I’m not taking sides in the matter between the Auditor and the football player.
Get in a Big Richard contest.
Run your mouth writing checks that might not hold up in a court of law, oh and do it so as to irritate someone with money and connections to pay for competent attorneys.
Write a book about your job while you still working that job, oh and double down on more Big Richard games in the book about some of the same people.
Good thing he didn't have to be able to pay his legal bills to defend himself when the Big Richard contest started to go badly via lawsuits.
Just because a person could write big checks with their mouth doesn't mean they should.
Shad’s book is, in many respects, a dramatic fabrication and is wholly void of context as well. He’s never had to openly and publicly defend himself and his actions. That time is coming.
Nothing is going to happen to Favre now. The Biden D.O.J. was going to come after him and make an example out of him, but thats over now. Remember, Wisconsin was a " Battleground State " this last election. Good ole Brett volunteered to drop in on this State and make a couple of " Campaign Stops, " endorsing Trump. If the Feds decide to come after him now, or in the future, then Trump will have his back.
I do not blame Brett for trying to recoup some of the money that the State of Mississippi took from him when he was playing ball and he had those huge paychecks coming in. Especially if his Accountant at the time was from Mississippi, and did not have sense enough to tell him to buy a condo in Florida, declare residence in Florida ( No State Taxes in FL. ), and then put everything that he owned in Mississippi in his wife's name, and then file taxes separately. If he did not do this, then the state of Mississippi took millions from him.
The problem that I have is that the money was taken from the funds that were being used to help support the poorest of the poor.
Shad has never had the makings of a varsity athlete.
Very well said. Thank you
Ole Brett did enough defaming of himself through the years. His many dubious actions have been on full display for many years. Why sue someone who stated the truth?
Shad pays his own legal bills?
"The book itself falsely states, among other things, that Favre had been 'taking money he knew should go to people in 'shelters,'' and had been 'trying to hide that fact from the media and the public,' and also accuses Favre of committing the felony of money laundering," Favre's attorneys wrote.
White has said he is paying his own legal bills in the defamation case.
"Favre's frivolous lawsuit has cost my family and me tens of thousands of dollars personally, but I will not back down from telling the truth," White said in a text message to The Associated Press, responding to the court filing. "Favre will lose this case, just as he has the others. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/41537266/brett-favre-tries-expand-defamation-suit-vs-miss-auditor
If that's the case why do we see reports that Jason Bobo's name (of the OSA) is on the more recent filings?
State Auditor Shad White, a Republican who has criticized wasteful spending in state government, is using a taxpayer-funded attorney to defend himself in a personal defamation lawsuit brought by NFL Hall of Famer Brett Favre.
Court records show that James Bobo, an Office of the State Auditor attorney, has filed numerous legal briefs on behalf of White in the litigation where Favre is suing the statewide official in his individual capacity — not in his official capacity as Mississippi’s state auditor." https://mississippitoday.org/2025/02/20/auditor-shad-white-using-state-funded-attorney-to-defend-him-in-brett-favre-defamation-lawsuit/
I bet Shad cannot palm a football.
The lawsuit Brett Favre filed against Shannon Sharpe was dismissed by a federal judge. Folks can chime in if they think there is much difference in what Sharpe said and what Shad said. Some details are below.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A federal judge on Monday dismissed Brett Favre’s defamation lawsuit against fellow retired NFL player Shannon Sharpe, ruling that Sharpe used constitutionally protected speech on a sports broadcast when he criticized Favre’s connection to a welfare misspending case in Mississippi.
U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett ruled that Sharpe, a former tight end, was using “rhetorical hyperbole” in saying on air that Favre was “taking from the underserved,” that the former quarterback “stole money from people that really needed that money” and that someone would have to be a sorry person “to steal from the lowest of the low.”
Favre sued Sharpe in February, saying that the fellow Pro Football Hall of Fame member made “egregiously false” statements about him on the Fox Sports talk show “Skip and Shannon: Undisputed.” The case was moved to federal court in March, and Sharpe left the sports show in June.
