The Ward 1 City Council race has quite the full field with no fewer than six- count them, six - candidates.
A forum for the candidates was held on March 20 at Christ United Church.
The candidates are (L-R in video): Incumbent Ashby Foote (I), Grace Greene (I), Jasmine Barnes (D), Rhoda Barnes (D), Jessica Carter (D), and Stephen Thompson (D).
It is a strong field. Two of the candidates are CPA's (Thompson and Barnes) and one is a former CFO of Canton Municipal Utilities (Thompson). One is a lawyer (Carter) while the incumbent is a well-known investments manager. It was encouraging to see several candidates bring up the Moody's downgrade on their own.
The forum opened with statements limited to three minutes for each candidate. After the round of self-promotion was completed, the discussion moved on to the usual suspects: crime, infrastructure, and economic development.

Ashby or Sara Green will likely win this ward. One of the CPA candidates has pissed ppl off by sticking signs on private property and intersection throughout LE area. Great way to win a vote and also not list your a Democrat running in a ward represented largely by Michael guest and Roger wicker both republicans.
a boring bunch
I liked the presentation and responses by the gentleman at the far end of the table, Mr. Thompson.
Foote is simply an anachronism, an animal from a historical period in time. He's had his chances to make a difference.
Sadly, a loud, angry black woman might win this district, and there are two in the race.
I was not impressed by the woman who constantly kept flipping and arranging her hair. That's a distracting habit that needs to be dealt with.
I'm a white man who doesn't qualify to vote in this election, but if I could, I would vote for Stephen Thompson who the blog operator failed to identify by party status.
Sticking your signs on private property suggests to passersby and neighbors that the property owner supports that candidate.
Mr. Foote has borrowed a sledge hammer and hard hat for his advertisement in which he says he wants to fight blight. He's wearing a cool vest, but has he been successful in fighting blight as long as he's held this seat?
When will Chowke be kicked out of his city hall office? How will he get around town without a taxpayer provided driver? Without a security detail who will protect him from terrorist attacks? So many questions.
Kingfish mentioned that one candidate is former CFO of Canton Municipal Utilities. Which one?
Stephen Thompson (on the far end) was CFO of Canton Municipal Utilities, then later promoted to General Manager of CMU. He is now employed by Waggoner Engineering I believe.
The fact that Jessica Carter worked with the Southern Poverty Law Center should cause ALL Ward 1 voters grave concern!
