Moak: Governor's only economic plan is "failure"

The House Democratic Caucus issued the following press release:

House Democratic Caucus Response to Recent Unemployment Numbers

Mississippi House Democratic Caucus Press

Contact: Rep. Bobby Moak (601) 359-3133
August 19, 2014

Once again, Mississippi is at the top of another bad list.

Mississippi has the highest unemployment rate of any state in the nation. Making matters worse, Mississippi’s unemployment rate rose again in July for the third straight month.

“The latest job numbers are a stark reminder that Governor Phil Bryant and his legislative leadership team’s only economic plan for Mississippi is failure,” said House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rep. Bobby Moak (D – Bogue Chitto).

“Don’t expect the news to get any better,” Rep. Moak continued. “We are losing $3,000,000.00 per day in Medicaid reimbursements, and Bryant and his legislative leaders have no plan to stop it. Our hospitals are closing and medical personnel are losing their jobs as a result. In addition, Chiquita is leaving our flagship port and heading to New Orleans. The Hospitality and Tourism industry is suffering. Corporate giveaways of our tax dollars and income credits to Phil Bryant’s buddies aren’t bringing the jobs he promised.”

And exactly what would Mr. Moak and the Democrats do differently besides accept ACA and make it increasingly difficult for the State to balance its budget in 3 years.

Mr. Moak is correct.

What would Bobby do, open casinos on the Pearl River?

And exactly what would Mr. Moak and the Democrats do differently ...

They couldn't do much worse than match the mess 3 successive terms of GOP Governors have produced.

But don't worry Thad Cochran is going to solve all of these problems by bringing home MORE debt financed pork.

Any time the Dems want to offer a positive contribution I'd be interested.

Increasing our dependence of handouts, e.g., Medicaid, is not a way to improve our financial situation, especially if the subsidies will disappear in 2 or 3 years.

Dems ran MS for about 135 years and we were last the entire time. Moak was in power while the Dems ran it.

Its Mississippi...we cant attract much cause we have little to offer. Some states are like that and it will never change no matter how many tax incentives we give out.

3:04 ding ding. right answer. MS takes in more federal dollars than it pays out. I know that is hard for some teabaggers to understand but the federal gov. is our sugar daddy and will be for many moons to come. Thank God for Cochran and the Democrats or our poor state would dry up and blow away

Moak is right. To have turned down free-to-the-State Medicaid expansion for 2 years was insane. The state has already produced enough new revenue to cover the additional Medicaid cost for years 7-10. But the Republicans turned this down - thereby hurting thousands of needy Mississippians, many of them the working poor. Now they want to give another tax cut to wealthy folks? I think we should get a tax cut only after they expand Medicaid, fully fund MAEP, make financial provision for repairing our streets, roads and bridges, and fully support higher education, so further tuition hikes won't be required. Bobby Moak is right, and the Republicans are wrong.

To decrease unemployment you first must have an unemployed that wants to get off the government dole and go to work.

The Barbour EchoChorus here wants all the pork money Thad the Adulterer can get Mississippi from the Federales BUT they don't want to accept a stinkin' penny to help the working poor. Just another status quo day in GOP La-La-Land.

You can twist numbers around to paint any picture that you like. Both parties are guilty of doing this. In reality, Mississippi's unemployment rate has dropped from 8.7% a year ago to 8.0% this year. That is not out of line with the rest of the country. Mississippi was passed by 5 states (CA, MI, IL, RI & NV) who all had rates above 9.0% a year ago but their rates dropped at a faster rate than MS. What's misleading about using unemployment rates as an indicator is that nationwide there is a trend of people finding jobs at lower salaries than their previous employment. Plus, record numbers of people are dropping out of the workforce which lowers the unemployment rate too.

Funny that the MS republicans have been governor for the last 16 of 20 years, controlled the senate & we are still blaming democrats. Then democrats are blaming republicans. Sounds like we need a third party in MS is not bought off by the Corporate Lobbyists of MMA.

Obama does it pretty well. If the shit fits...

Moak must be bored in Annandale to spit this piece out. They are truly the party of NO and No Ideas other than Uncle Obama. I am just fearful that the tea baggers will help to ensure he is speaker next cycle.

"The state has already produced enough new revenue to cover the additional Medicaid cost for years 7-10."

Sounds like we're doing something right, economic development-wise.

The Medicaid money would amount to more economic development than what the state is pissing away on things like Kior and various other failures. The Democrats are actually right about this one.

Who was in charge during the cull cow fiasco? Couldn't be Democrats because everything I'm reading here they are always right.

Anonymous said...

My question is - who was in charge during KIOR funding. It's going to make the Beef Plant look like peanuts!

The sum total of Barbour economic development debacles dwarfs the cull cow screw up. None bigger than the $600 million dollar 'Port of the Future' failure.

I am a republican, who agrees completely with Moak on this. The casino business in this state will all but be gone in 10 years, and with it jobs, and millions in revenue. Why? Republicans in power are afraid of a political backlash from giving them tax incentives, that will keep them here.

Kior is just the tip of iceberg! Have you been up to Prentiss County and seen the road to nowhere??? A four lane road with Millions spent on a road that dead ends into nothing. No house or business for miles! Money spent so Barbour and Bryant's buddies could build business's that now have shown will never happen.

The group in power now will make sure the rich get richer, and the poor will stay poor, as long as it benefits them most of all at the end of the day.

8:29 PM The casinos are not failing from the lack of tax incentives, they are failing for a number of reasons in many states not just Mississippi. Blame a weak economy, more competition and the rise of internet gambling but don't blame the legislature for not providing more tax incentives to an industry that is definitely on a downward slope.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
