Water Clerk Busted

State Auditor Shad White issued the following statement.

Today State Auditor Shad White announced that Special Agents from his office have arrested Lisa Goodson, former Town of Sardis Water Department Clerk, on one count of embezzlement.

Goodson is accused of taking cash from water payments and then deleting the transactions from the payment system to hide the theft.

“My office will continue to crack down on cases big and small and ensure that taxpayer money is spent properly,” said State Auditor Shad White. “As always, prosecutors must decide to take our cases and indict an individual before we make an arrest, so I’m grateful to be able to work with prosecutors around the state on cases like this.”

Goodson faces up to $5,000 in fines and 5 years in prison if convicted. All persons arrested by the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A $50,000 surety bond covers Goodson’s employment as the Town of Sardis Water Department Clerk. Surety bonds are similar to insurance designed to protect taxpayers from corruption.

Suspected fraud can be reported to the Auditor’s office online at any time by clicking the red button at www.osa.ms.gov or calling 1-(800)-321-1275 during normal business hours.

Its going to cost more in taxpayer dollars than its worth to prosecute her. just plea down to a misdemeanor, pay a fine, move on.

No. I am glad Shad is doing this.

People who have been blessed to live in the United States for generations do not understand the constant, inescapable anger, despair, anxiety and frustration of the Third World where you are constantly under vigilance of being robbed and taken advantage of in any context or scenario.

The Third World can be a place where institutions that should be respected and trusted, things like banks, utilities, steal from people without consequences. It perpetuates just a base level acceptance of Third World conditions and crime because even institutions are corrupt.

America is an incredibly amazing country where we can send cash in our mailbox and expect it generally to get to where it is supposed to go. That is what makes America incredible! The type of crime that Lisa committed is especially heinous, because it stabs at the fabric of our society. It makes us question whether we can go to our water utility and pay cash and expect it to go towards our water bill.

It is sick when we take advantage of people's trust in that way. If we can't trust our institutions, then everything else starts to fall apart. It's incredible we live in a country and in a State where this type of behavior is not tolerated.

Nah. It will likely just appear as a docket item, a judge will find her guilty, and she will write them a check for that $2,136. Unless she has priors, no jail time and possibly even no fine.

Sardis to Tunica Casinos..only 52 miles!

Why not add Cost of Prosecution to the fine (if she is convicted, of course)?

11:05, it’s not as simplistic as that. You’ve got to include the taxpayer dollars she might embezzle in the future and the deterrence factor that prevents other taxpayer money from being embezzled by other officials.

11:05 - and that's the answer, eh? it's too expensive so let's reduce the consequence to a fine. ever think that that's what's wrong with all of these idiots in the first place? that it'll turn into nothing so why not do it? wtf is wrong with people like you?

Once again, Shad needs to be more detailed about how these people are doing these things. The word would actually be transparent. He doesn't have to try the case, but the people need to know more to see the justification. I want people that steal prosecuted. I don't want my tax dollars spent prosecuting someone that stole time off the clock. We can deal with that in house, and it won't cost the people $50,000.

11:05, your idea is about the same as California’s experiment with making shoplifting under $1,000 a misdemeanor. It’s not going so well.

Exploitin' them Surety Bonds said...

Can anyone make a logical reason as to why the investigative costs are identical as the amount stolen? There is no way they are the same unless there's some statute that says "the cost of recovery can't be more than the cost of the amount stolen" or some such verbiage and Shad is just putting the max on it and rolling.

She nose she's in trouble.

This is not a "low-hanging fruit" comment - I'm not taking issue with the investigation or arrest. Shad White having his staff write and issue press releases on this kind of thing is exactly like Sean Tindell having his staff issue press releases every time a Trooper writes a speeding ticket or arrests someone for DUI.

And before anyone goes there, there is no reasonable argument that these releases "serve as a warning..." because there is no reasonable argument that other folks in these types of roles didn't already know taking cash they knew they were not entitled to take could get them into trouble. Just as Tindell doesn't need to have his staff issue releases to warn folks that speeding could result in a ticket or DUI could result in an arrest.

The really good news is that Shad and his crack squad of investigators didn't find another Mississippi RICO!

The people are starting to see that Tate Reeves and Shad White won't allow corruption to exist in Mississippi!

Many Mississippians are wondering what Shad considers a "big case".

@1:05 PM, WRONG! Shad has let former Pearl PD Chief Dean Scott steal thousands of dollars while he was Chief, by having a no show job with the Rankin County Tax Assessors Office. Scott and the former mayor of Richland both are guilty . After a thorough investigation instead of arresting both (which like this lady his special agents have no problem doing), the case was turned over to the Rankin County DA, who quickly handed the case over to the State Attorney General’s Office, where it will go to die, with no action taken. Corruption In Rankin County is wide spread but those doing the stealing are part of the group in power, from the governor on down.
KF can you please find out where this case stands?

"Once again, Shad needs to be more detailed about how these people are doing these things."

Once again, it's not the job of the State Auditor to draw a diagram for you explaining how these embezzlements occur.

But allow me to help. If I'm working the drawer the day you come in and pay $169 for your water bill, I pocket the cash and mark your account paid, in the computer system. There is no segregation of duties and no internal audit procedure.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
