The city of Jackson issued the following update about Thalia Mara Hall on its website.
The City of Jackson is currently awaiting additional proposals to ensure we get the best pricing and least disruptive timeline regarding Thalia Mara Hall. We will continue to publish updates every Thursday as additional developments are made.
- 9/11: We were visited by the Fire Marshall. The Fire Marshall issued an evaluation report of TMH. A number of issues were discovered for which a response document is being prepared for submittal by Sept 21.
- 9/13: A meeting was held with a City Engineering contractor, the CDFL team, and the JCI team to evaluate new findings and request proposal revisions.
- 9/16: There was a follow-up meeting to revise the Chiller plan to address the following:
- primary unit (Chiller) arrival
- secondary unit (Chiller) purchase
- request secondary hygienic testing
- 9/19: Secondary hygienic testing performed.
- 9/19: The new Chiller arrived! The earlier than expected arrival of the new chiller was an exciting event. Having this component in place will help to support the remediation effort by ensuring optimal working conditions and proper airflow as soon as the cleaning is complete. This component is arriving almost 6 months earlier than the previously estimated timeline.
- Multiple site visits were made to support the additional proposals currently being put together.
Next Steps:
- Quote comparisons for remediation: The City of Jackson is currently awaiting proposals from additional vendors to ensure we get the best pricing and least disruptive timeline regarding remediation.
- So far, the remediation timelines that have been given are between 4 to 8 weeks.
- A final inspection will be performed. This is contingent upon Next Step # 2 above.
- Clearance and certificate of occupancy at this point are to be determined.
Other:
- Rigging System: The rigging inspection was rescheduled to accommodate for the earlier than expected chiller arrival and connection. The chiller arrived today and will be tested and connected in the coming week, allowing for rescheduling immediately following.
- Fire Curtain:Fire Curtain inspection is to be performed as part of the rigging inspection, and the planning will be reflected in the Fire Marshall response document.
We still do not know when remediation will begin and have not yet received the completed proposals from the new parties. We also requested proposal revisions from the first company to address new findings by Mr. Al-Turk, a city-contracted engineer.

It will be operational NEXT summer.
Can Ted Heffin take over Thalia Mara Hall too please? Thats the only way its going to get fixed.
It shouldn't be a problem to get some rigging done.
One of the few things City of Jackson has plenty of expertise at accomplishing!
Does Richard's Disposal handle "microbial" invasions?
You'll be indicted long before then
More of Jackson responding instead of maintaining and planning ahead. Reactionary government at its worst
This is great news and maybe now all of you shameless bigots will finalky sit down and shut up!
5:39 - shamless bigots? Great news?
Lets see, the City (administration) has to put out a press release telling about the remediation plan for a (another) closed city facility; one that is closed due to the administration's failure to provide basic management and maintenance.
This follows the city not properly providing the following basic services: Garbage collection, water treatment, water delivery, sewage treatment, sewage collection, police protection, bridge maintenance resulting in multiple closures lasting several years, street paving, and now the landfill.
What's racist about these conditions? It speaks only to the failure of the current administration to do its job.
@5:39
Nice of you to chime in Shock-way.
The city is good at talking about the problems and making lists of problems but very inefficient at actually fixing problems. Why hasn’t the work started? There’s plenty of work to be done. Why do we wait until the “chiller” arrives before figuring out who will install it? This is pathetic.
New Chiller provided by Socrates Garrett Chiller LLC. Right?
The mother of all wars
Does anyone know how much money was spent on the hall before last year’s IBC
I wonder if they just ordered whatever chiller (or something that looks like one) that could be delivered fastest. Then figure out how to make it work later?
Citizens and visitors to City of Jackson: "Your failure to plan ahead doesn't make it my emergency."
City of Jackson: "Guess what- you wrong about that!"
We are paying Al-Turk $700,000 to step in for our City Engineer. I don't believe any doctors or even lawyers at Butler-Snow make that much.
Today I told my son and his family to stay where they live, that my wife and I will drive 9 1/2 hours to see them for Thanksgiving because Jackson is broken and dangerous and the flights at the airport undependable, likely to be cancelled. Carjackings and killings are only outpaced by busted streets, dysfunctional traffic lights and buildings empty of all but vagrants.
First - yes the City of Jackson is currently run by incompetents.
Second - this is a public building and if anyone cared to do so, you could have easily driven by and seen the Johnson Controls trucks parked by the new chiller. And yes, it is an actual chiller. I’m wondering why one commenter put “chiller” in quotation marks. Typically large HVAC equipment like this has to be ordered months ahead of time. The City just got lucky that Johnson Controls had a chiller available to install. It’s probably a temporary chiller would be my guess and a permanent one will be installed later.
"The City of Jackson is currently awaiting additional proposals to ensure we get the best pricing and least disruptive timeline regarding Thalia Mara Hall"......Translation: the friends we want to pay haven't put their paperwork in yet.
"...and request proposal revisions." Translation: our friends aren't qualified so we need to tweek the guidelines.
" The City of Jackson is currently awaiting proposals from additional vendors..." Translation: Our friends haven't gotten their paperwork in and we needed time to change things around so they would qualify.
@5:39, if you think they sound racist then you need to just step back and really take a long hard look at the overall condition of Jackson now as compared to how it was when the last White mayor (Ditto) was in office. The city departments were well run, we had no issues with water, sewer, garbage, streets, bridges, overall cleanliness and we had a few well known first class art exhibits to visit jackson that took a lot of hard work and effort to pull off. Now, can you prove to me 5:39 that it is ok as it currently is or was it better? Harvey Johnson didn’t do anything he promised. He began the downfall. Hinds county for that matter is heading straight down the toilet so fast it can’t stop. They cannot fulfill their obligations to the taxpayers, just like jackson and hinds taxpayers have to put money into the city. When I had a business in jackson I paid hinds county and coj taxes and what did I personally receive? Not a damn thing that was worth anything. We know lumumba has his minions cruising this site to see show we think so with that being said, your ilk has caused a lot of hardworking good people to leave in anger because of the way it has been operated in the past 27 years.
I live in Jackson. I am white. My neighborhood has never had a problem that wasn't small time vandalism by private school white kids. All of them are now responsible adults and respected members of and contributors to the GOP.
So an old building in Jackson was neglected for a long time as other problems took priority and the money wasn't sufficient to address all the problems the city faced.
And, I don't know who you people are that bash our airport. I fly in and out all the time without difficulty. Problems occur in the large hubs or with the airlines, not with our airport or it's personnel. I been flying into and out of the airport for decades and it's better now than it was when us white folks ran everything in Jackson. It beats the hell out of the two cities I fly into from here most of the time. One hasn't changed all that much since I first flew 65 years ago and the other hadn't but is now a mess under construction expansion.
Our airport is certainly nicer than some of the older hubs in large cities except for Atlanta.
A lot of you right wingers seem to either be ignorant or just make stuff up!
It is possible to rent a chiller and have it by the next day in most places. Hospitals do it when they need additional cooling.
If Jackson paid its bills, then there would be a regular entity to call, for installing the chiller. In fact, several steps in the process would probably have been handled that same entity. The whole thing would have been essentially turn-key - a non-issue. That's how things happen, when there's trust and trustworthiness.
"...All of them are now responsible adults and respected members of and contributors to the GOP."
Delightful! "ALL". Your unspoken assumptions about your audience's preferences, are amazing. You really think that readers here are "right wingers", and that they truly give a rat's adze about the GOP - and PARTY MEMBERSHIP! (one wonders from which continent you're writing - but it's certainly not 'The Landmass Between New Orleans and Mobile')
But I always enjoy your posts, whenever they pop-up. This one reminded me of the Nineties fad for Gonzo Bios. Remember the ad in mags like Vanity Fair, for some grand old San Francisco hotel - one in a Short Fiction series inventing 'lore' for the hotel? (creating work for writers dying of AIDS) A young woman was arranging a weekend hotel rendezvous with hubby, and got a room upgrade for pretending to be a member of that sophisticated new Clinton family. Assumptions about the target audience...
