MDOT: Campaign Signs on Rights of Way Illegal

The Mississippi Department of Transportation issued the following statement.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) reminds political candidates that campaign signs are not permitted within right-of-way on state highways according to Section 63-3-317 of the Mississippi Code of 1972 Annotated. The width of highway right-of-way varies by location and includes the driving lanes, shoulders and mowed areas; the right-of-way can potentially reach distances of 300 feet or more from the centerline of driving lanes.

To maintain traffic safety, please observe the following:

  • Illegally placed campaign signs contribute to our state's $3.2 million litter problem that spoils Mississippi's natural beauty.
  • Any illegally placed signs will be removed.
  • Keeping the right-of-way clear prevents safety hazards and interference with the traveling public along roadways.
  • Signs with steel or wooden posts pose potential hazards that may cause harm to roadside workers, may damage roadside equipment and may become projectiles if hit by mowers.
  • Signs are not permitted within areas necessary for clear vision at intersections; signs must not interfere with the sight distance of a driver.
  • No signs are allowed in limited access right-of-way.
  • Typically, the right-of-way is larger near roadway intersections.
  • Signs removed by MDOT crews will be kept for two weeks at a local MDOT maintenance facility before being discarded.
  • Candidates may retrieve signs from MDOT without penalty.

For information about right-of-way distances in specific areas along a state-maintained highway, call your local MDOT maintenance facility.

For more information, call 601-359-7074 or visit

Kingfish note: The same rule applies to Jackson.  You can report cluttered right of ways to the city. City workers will remove them.

Why are candidates not required to clean up their signs after an election?

Jackson in particular

Good luck - as I recall High Street in Jackson had special rules that did not allow signs. The Farmers Market, Fairgrounds and politicians break that rule on a daily basis. Regardless, Jackson also has rules so if I'm wrong, Jackson should be cleaning it up. High Street looks like S__T during election season. Don't get me started about State Street, especially near UMMC, which I believe is also MDOT's responsibility.

Some sign frames are great for holding targets at the range.

These rules, regulations and laws do not apply to Kennuff Stokes as he has them on utility poles, railroad crossing gates, and hanging from every traffic light.

I am a Serial Vigilante Remover of political signs from R.O.W.s in NorthEast Jackson, I have grabbed up and thrown a dozen at a time in a convenient commercial dumpster (for safe keeping in case sign polluter wants to dig out and recover).

On most Residential streets, ROW is about 9 feet from back of curb. (50' overall ROW less 32' street) / (2) = 9' each side. Any sign inside the ROW is trash and your civic duty to remove.

@12:02 pm

You have our (property owner's) permission to remove ANY signs on the SE corner of Ridgewood/Atkins. Just because it's a vacant lot doesn't mean it's okay to pollute our property with your crap.

There's a Guest campaign sign on the Highway 51 right-of-way that has been there for months and months, but he is just special.

@12:02: Incorrect

Why is MDOT more concerned with signs in the right of way than cutting grass in the right of way?

Anonymous said...

Someone please tell those childish anime losers to clean their damn signs up that they placed all over town.

Anonymous said...

Signs should be the least of MDOTs worries. Do they even drive on the roads in Mississippi?

Anonymous said...

Just watch & see who's Signs get to stay on MDOT ROW-, some do some don't.

Anonymous said...

MDOT could use the signs to fill potholes.

Anonymous said...

It’s okay for MDOT to remove them but not me, John Q. Public?

Anonymous said...

MDOT is not responsible for the roads in Mississippi.
MDOT is responsible for the highways and bridges.

So the penalty for breaking the law is they take your signs down and give them back to you.

Anonymous said...

campaign signs are nothing but glorified litter....same goes for those stinking ballon releases

Sadly, regardless of your race or gender, signs influence voters. The yellow dog partisan will note party.
This is how we end up with George Santos in Congress.
Signs give some voters, "name recognition" help.
I'd like every candidate to be fined $30 per sign for every sign left on private property without permission and $20 for every sign not removed within 72 hours of election results confirmation.

Most of us know of the GUEST sign you mentioned, however it really does appear to be way back off the road and most likely behind the ROW for 51. Guess he must have permission or $$ the prop owner for placement there. Hard to compare his few to the quantity & blight of the newbies.

MDOT only has jurisdiction on state and federal highway rights of way and any projects they be engaged in or maintaining on areas leading to those rights of way.

90% of this yaeh yaeh bullshit has nothing to do with the jurisdiction of MDOT.

You might as well be bitching about all the campaign ads that appear over on the right margin of this page that stay up for years.

Just be sure you know that your third grader is half way to college.

Signs are one thing, but parking new cars on ROW in front of I-55 dealerships, by the hundreds, must be a 'friends with benefits' for wealthy auto dealers...

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
