Closing Soon

Yet another business is closing in Jackson.

Bought quite a few books and magazines over the years at BAM.  Thanks for the memories.  It was a good run.

Remember when Lemuria's owner used to complain about the chains?  Well, he's managed to outlast Borders and Books A Million.

Soon all that will be left are daiquiri bars and bail bond shops.

No snark, I thought they closed years ago.

Ohh.. that's a shame..

Again? Seems like this sign was up there a couple of years ago.

Hmm, not defending Jackson. However, to be intellectually honest, how are book store chains doing nationwide these days?

They should’ve kept their focus on books. Instead they wanted to sell board games, toys, video games, DVDs and keychains for a hefty markup.

If I want to test a pozzed game or movie, I pirate it. (thank you EMPRESS and x0r) I will never give those groomers another shekel.
If I want want to play a board game, I go to Dogmud Tavern.
A book is about the only physical media I will buy anymore.

There were definitely some space cadets working in there last time I went.

Meh…most of the head in the sand virtue signalers prefer to act pretentious and get their cars broken into at Banner Hall.

On Saturdays Years ago when Jackson was a safe city I would take our cars to the Firestone store across from the Kroger for tire work, after dropping it off I would walk down to the Book a Million store and spend hours looking through the books and generally buying some. Not now , not worth the chance on being carjacked or shot. Shame it’s closing.

I browsed for many enjoyable hours there and in many other bookstores. Over time, though, I grew, thinking changed, and the older I became, the more I wanted to read the older, politically incorrect histories and the books the chains would not sell. I find most of what I need on archive.org.

It's creepy going to a bookstore anymore, anyway. It's as though one has to be tattooed, bull-ringed, and wear spools the size of kumquats in the ears to be hired to work there. It's a Brave New World, and eye bleach provided by a single payer is a dire need now.

I agree with 5:21.

No snark either, but I thought they left years ago.

They’ve had that going out of biz sign up forever. Kinda like the Carter’s jewelry “going out of business” business.

Before the wife and I got married we went on a date to BAM. That had to be over 30 years ago.

5:20, u left one out.
Medical pot shops.

Add American Car Center to the list

Books-a-million may close but Carter Jewelers never will.

Trying to picture the locations of Kroger, Firestone and BAM.

Maybe very few people BUY books any more. Too easy to bring stuff up online. But the weirdos you find in a bookstore you will also encounter online.

9:07, you've never seen one - Just as you've never been in a bookstore.

Can’t really blame Jackson for this one, as easy as that is. Chain book stores have struggled for 20 years. One of the only sectors in retail where the locally owned version won out over the big chains.

Lemuria is the great friend of state and local writers. BAM does nothing for them. Good riddance BAM.Support your local bookstore.

That building was much more suited for The Palm Beach Club and Studebakers.

Books A Million is closing everywhere.
People that read a book at all read on Kindles now.

I thought they were closing a couple of years or so , I forget. they had something similar to this on the outside.

Just like Carter Jewelers, always going out of business sale.

So, it is finally happening?

Jackson is the doughnut hole city. Everything inside the doughnut hole is a wasteland.
But now the good news: Chicago mayor Lori Lightner lost her reelection bid (too much crime). Maybe this will happen to Chockweed Labumba.

Sadly I think the collective IQ is significantly higher than the Jackson average.
As much as some want Chuck gone, MANY are pleased as punch with him. I don't see his election going as Lori's did (who also said she lost because she is black and racism, lol)

Books A Million is not closing everywhere. Thriving in my area. It doesn't have a competitor though.

I was in this Books a Million about 4-5 weeks ago, and I don't recall these signs. It definitely appeared to be liquidating, nonetheless.

The coffee shop inside closed awhile back. I will say they have a great selection of books on clearance. Take advantage of the sales. Just park as close to the door as you can because...Jackson.

You won't walk from the Firestone to the Kroger?

Seriously?

Do you wet the bed night and day as well?

Books are still great for the beach and the library shelves, but most have gone the way of the tablet.

I had my first frozen coffee at the coffee shop there in the mid 1990s. That was before Starbucks, or any other trendy coffee shop had come to the area. I forget the name of it...something Joe's? I spent many hours in there perusing books. It was a special place back in the day.

They're moving to smaller format stores. They closed ours here in Decatur, AL and reopened nearby in a newer shopping center. About the same size as the old Waldenbooks in Metrocenter. A friend in Slidell confirmed the same for their store.

I spent hours in the magazine section reading about cars, car stereo.

Nobody answers the important question:

how good are the markdowns now?

Anonymous said...

Most of their stock is just 20% off , as of last week.

Anonymous said...

I think Kingfish reports this every few years and it never seems to happen.

There's one born every minute - and some are blog administrators.

Do not confuse a 'Going out FOR business' sign with a 'Going out OF business sign'.

Kingfish said...

BAM announced it was closing several years ago then reversed the decision.

Anonymous said...

I honestly thought it had been closed

The Waldenbooks reference, above, made me smile. Good memories.

Oh do I have so many fond memories of BAM customer lingering farts and greasy magazine covers. It will be greatly missed.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
