Jackson Raising Water & Sewer Rates

It will cost more to take a drink or take a crap in Jackson after the Jackson City Council voted to raise water and sewer rates today. However, the City Council did reject a proposed increase in garbage collection fees. WLBT reported:

After more than an hour and a half of discussion, the Jackson City Council narrowly approved raising its water and sewer rates for customers.

However, the council voted down a proposal to raise sanitation fees to $35 a month.

Jackson leaders say the increases were needed to meet consent decree requirements, bring the city into compliance with its bond covenants and cover current operating costs within its solid waste division.

Council members voted 4-3 to approve a 20 percent rate hike for water and sewer, with Virgi Lindsay, Angelique Lee, Ashby Foote, and Brian Grizzell voting in favor. Opposed were Councilmen Kenneth Stokes, Aaron Banks, and Vernon Hartley.

With the rate increases, sewer fees will go from $4.47 per hundred cubic feet (CCF) to $5.36 per CCF. Water will go from $3.21 to $3.81 per CCF.

One hundred cubic feet of water is 748 gallons. The average family of four uses between 320 and 400 gallons of water a day, or between 12.8 and 16 CCFs per month, according to data provided by the United States Geological Survey.

Foote, who represents Ward 1, broke ranks with Lee, Lindsay, and Grizzell to be the deciding vote in the council’s decision to reject the garbage rate increase. Article

Incompetency costs-

You can bill the residents $1 per month or $1000 per month when nobody faces cut offs.

Just don't pay. Why not?

They are not here capable of proper billing even if the rate was 1000.00 a month

Let me see, raise the rates on the responsible customers who pay their bills to make up for the free-loaders who don't pay their bills (rewarding bad behavior).

Oh, whiners…*sigh*…yes, our poor old city is broken, our state remains at the bottom of any quality-of-life scale. But look at your real estate, and ask yourself: could you afford what you now own, in a fancier zip code? Austin, Denver, for example? We remain here for a variety of reasons, and kvetching about the unfixable makes for pretty boring, repetitive reading on ol’ Kingfish’s bloggorama.

@9:29 you make a valid point. And I agree. But why do the citizens of Jackson keep voting for the same clowns? The citizens don’t want the city repaired. If they did, they would vote for the folks who could repair it.

Mississippi is the 'fishing hole' capital of the nation. So, in that dynamic, we are NOT at the bottom of the Q-of-L scale. And you can't kvetch that away from us.

Just because Ophelia hangs at the library instead of tied-off at a cypress on the lake doesn't mean she knows of what she speaks. Trade that musty-smelling book for a worm and a hook and experience another side of life!

Brother Stokes is not going to like this. Many press conferences coming.

Can't argue with that Ophelia! LOL

Inflation is upon us. It’s unreasonable to expect the price of any good or service kids going to remain the same.

When was the last increase and what is the average of the communities that surround Jackson? Just curious. Sometimes things go up. Inflation, operating costs, etc. To think you can stay at the same rate forever is not logical. However, this is Jackson and we all know what is going on here.

They have to raise rates to pay for that "free" bottled water that is handed out almost weekly when there is a boil water notice, or no water at all. Also his nibs the boy mayor chowke will be needing a new luxury car soon.

Anonymous said...

You can raise the rates by 400% and it won’t change anything if you don’t bill people. As in a lot of people this month alone.

Maybe Shad could audit. Oh wait. He doesn't even live in Jackson. He's in his safe little suburb hiding behind that badge and the uniform he can't even fill out. Phony!

Once again, Jackson leaders propose a bad-aid without ever addressing the root problem. Need to stop the bleeding before applying band aid….

Is it just me or does anyone else wonder why it costs more to send crap through the sewer than to fill a glass with (filtered) water from the tap? Come to think of it, maybe I just answered my own question...

For water, Jackson would be charging $5.09 per 1000 gallons (I converted from CCF to 1000 gallons).

For comparison, Ridgeland, Madison, and Bear Creek Water (gluckstadt area) all charge in the ballpark of roughly around $2.00 per 1000 gallons. So Jackson rates are 2-3 times what the rates are in south Madison county.

9:07 : Exactly what is happening. This is the Mayors "shared sacrifice". I especially feel for those folks in Lake Dockery.

Well 11:30 we can see your voting mindset......

Oh well, just can't fix STUPID! Oh well, take some of that high priced
sewer overflow from the street and spread over your yard.

At least in the spring you'll have one of the better looking yards in the "hood"..

Yep. Moved to Ridgeland last year and literally cut my Water bill in half. Was 80-something a month and it's 40-something now.

Just paid my Bear Creek water AND sewer bill for November....$38.60!

PVC pipe, ductile iron, brass fittings, ductile fittings, have all gone up a ton. So a dollar doesn't go nearly as far today as it did even 12-18 months ago. And with restaurants raising pay and giving signing bonuses, utilities have to raise pay for employees also to compete. And in the utility business, the customer has to pay for all of it. I expect any smart and well run utility in the metro area will be increasing rates in the next 12 months. It's part of life.

I applaud Jackson for raising rates. This is a needed step in the countless steps it will take to get the water/sewer train back on the track in the City. They have many hurdles but you have to start somewhere. The issue isn't raising rates. The issue is how efficiently and wisely will they utilize the money they are charging (of course you have to bill and collect it).

Rankin County has seen huge rate increases to pay for the new sewer plant. Madison County can expect some increases coming also.

@3:57 PM - Thanks for the insight, Chowke. Bear Creek is not raising rates. I know, as I am on their board, Mr. Jackistan apologist.

@4:19. There is no way you are on the board. LOL

If you are in Lake Dockery proper.....meaning property fronting Lake you are being double billed. Each one of you pay double what your Forest Woods neighbors pay.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, Mayor, but your political payback for your waste management company didn't happen. We didn't buy your story about reasons for not revealing those who bid on the job. That's because your decision is made and no other companies were given an opportunity.

As far as water, just got a bill for more than $3,000 after making personal trips to try to get a balance and being told we didn't owe anything. Perhaps an accounting manager and collection agency would better serve your constituents and the City. Thank you to our council members who voted against this. I pray someone runs against my spineless representative.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
