Governor Gives Bonus to Troopers

Governor Tate Reeves issued the following statement.

Governor Tate Reeves today announced the authorization of $1,000 in hazard pay for each sworn law enforcement officer who actively served during the COVID-19 State of Emergency and who was employed by state agencies as of November 30, 2021. This one-time hazard pay, which is funded through discretionary CARES Act funds, will be distributed to state law enforcement officers by the end of the 2021 calendar year.

“As long as I’m governor, Mississippi will always back the blue,” said Governor Tate Reeves. “Throughout the pandemic, our state law enforcement officers stepped up in a big way. They put their own health on the line and risked increased exposure to COVID-19 to do what they’ve always done – selflessly protect and serve our communities with honor and professionalism. They’ve earned every penny of this hazard pay, and I am proud to have authorized it. My administration will continue to do everything we can to ensure our state’s law enforcement officers receive the support and recognition they deserve.”

Tate can politically pander every bit as good as Phil ever did.

I wonder why teachers in JPS have not received the bonus others have from the CARES Act funds?

Teacher at 8:47, probably cause they have been at home not teaching!

8:47 If it’s performance based then…..well…….you know

I wonder if Tate wii have troopers build him a lake while being paid by the State? Phil has a nice piece of property. Wondering how Phil became a millionaire on a Governor’s salary?

Tate just sees them as his Praetorian Guard.

While I am supportive of Law Enforcement Officers, how is this not a illegal donation or bonus, both of which are prohibited by the Mississippi Constitution? Section 66: No law granting a donation or gratuity in favor of any person or object shall be enacted except by the concurrence of two-thirds of the members elect of each branch of the Legislature, nor by any vote for a sectarian purpose or use. Section 96: The Legislature shall never grant extra compensation, fee, or allowance, to any public officer, agent, servant, or contractor, after service rendered or contract made, nor authorize payment, or part payment, of any claim under any contract not authorized by law; but appropriations may be made for expenditures in repelling invasion, preventing or suppressing insurrections. No matter how you couch it, these payments are illegal under the Mississippi Constitution.

@8:47 AM - So you think that you deserve a bonus for getting paid to stay home? It must be stressful getting paid for those daily "afternoon delights."

@9:05am - I thought that was Fitch?

There's a whole lot of other sworn state law enforcement other than troopers that aren't paid nearly as well and don't have their own special retirement system. Raises for Troopers! is just as much of a unfair political pander as Raises for Teachers!.

ANYONE in Government WHO HAS WORKED DIRECTLY with the public thruout the last TWO years DESERVE a hell of a lot more than a measly grand ! I am speaking on behalf of those who NEVER went home "to work". Sorry school teachers. Cares Act money is being stolen by all sorts and nary one deserve it.

smdh!!

10:00 : Better than sitting at the house watching NETFLIX. Just waste to ride up and down the road. But whatever, I understand the divide and would rather HP to get it than elected who did indeed go home and stay there.

Once again Kingfish either fucks up the headline or does a poor job of explaining how 'law enforcement' suddenly is restricted to 'troopers'. But, he can always claim "I just copied and pasted". Meanwhile, the readership of this blog has no idea who, which or what will receive the hazard duty pay.

If Tater would gain 30 more pounds and learn to smoke a cigar, he'd be boss-hog. Get that boy some Over-Hauls!

I've worked in state government and law enforcement for almost 20 years. It's the absolute worst time ever to be in law enforcement. Everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame, a viral video and a large settlement, and apparently they're willing to get killed to get it. They don't understand the consequences.
What the troopers do is dangerous work. It really is.
But most of them are absolute jerks for no reason. They're hard to be nice to. They're arrogant, pompous and self centered. They believe they're the only law enforcement agency in existence, and some of them are dumb. Just plain dumb. Then with "FEEL" and The Tater Tot pandering to them just makes it worse. Other agencies that haven't had raises in years get $hit on.
Oh well, I guess it do what it do, huh?

DPS is a pretty thankless job. Let’s face it you don’t win many fans writing tickets, searching people’s cars and sweeping body parts off the road after some idiot kill’s themselves and possibly others. Perhaps if Reeves actually convinced Mississippians that he gave a rats ass about them giving a grand bonus to law enforcement wouldn’t seem like a payoff to his hinchmen.

12:36 Nailed it Bud!!

12:55 I've never seen a Trooper sweep body parts off a road. However being a firefighter I've done my share & it's sickening as sh-t! Go on back to your videos boys & let the men do the real work.

Wait a minute. Our sawed off runt of an auditor has issued a demand on some good folks in Leflore County who used CARES Act money to pay local law enforcement officers hazard pay in EXACTLY the same way that Tater has announced. Hmmmmm.

Perhaps Tate's staff should have done some research. According to the Federal Register / Vol. 86, No. 10 / Friday, January 15, 2021, page 4185.

Hazard pay specifically may only be covered to the extent it is related to COVID–19. A recipient (state) may use payments from the Fund to cover hazard pay for a police officer coming in close contact with members of the public to enforce public health or public safety orders, but across-the board hazard pay for all members of a police department regardless of their duties would not be able to be covered with payments from the Fund.

1255 DPS is more than just mhp. Troopers’ jobs are not near as hard as a municipal officer or deputy sheriff. Don’t try to argue that point, you aint ready. What happened to the AGs bodyguards who committed home invasion? Oh that’s right they are above the law…move along

I'm no lawyer, but I did hear Lieutenant Tragg testify once that the Federal Cares Act does not trump the Mississippi Constitution.

This might not have come up in Bank Teller Class.

Gettin' measured for them short sleeve shirts ain't easy when you consider the steroid pump-ups it took to get to that pernt.

Tater is a classic example of a weenie who wanted to be...

MHP should be abolished and the funding given to counties for deputies who do real police work.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
