The Mississippi Republican Party issued the following statement.
Today, the Mississippi Republican Party’s State Executive Committee
elected Lucien Smith to serve as the Party’s new State Chairman. Smith ran unopposed after being nominated by Governor Phil Bryant who was present for today’s election.
“I’m
pleased the Republican State Executive Committee accepted my nomination
and has chosen Lucien as State Chairman,” said Governor Bryant. “He has
a wealth of experience to draw from during his time on staff for
multiple Republican governors and also in the private sector practicing
law. He has the trust of his peers around the state, and I look forward
to working with him soon to further the values of the Republican Party.”
“I'm
honored by the committee’s vote today and humbled by the Governor’s
request that I serve,” said Chairman Smith. “Mississippi Republicans
have never been in a stronger position, and I look forward to continuing
the work to elect even more of those who share our conservative
values.”
Lieutenant
Governor Tate Reeves and Speaker of the Mississippi House of
Representatives Philip Gunn also praised the election of Smith to his
new role.
“I
congratulate Lucien on his selection as chairman of the Mississippi
Republican Party,” said Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves. “I look forward
to working with him in this new role as we attract more Mississippians to the party of conservative ideas.”
“I
am thrilled to have Lucien Smith leading our party,” said Speaker of
the House Philip Gunn. “I have known Lucien for a very long time. He
shares the values that we, as Republicans, hold dear. His intelligence
and knowledge will be great assets in this role.”
Lucien
currently serves as the 12th Chairman of the Mississippi Republican
Party following his unanimous election by the State Executive Committee.
He previously served as Chief of Staff to Governor Phil Bryant and
Counsel to Governor Haley Barbour. An attorney in private practice, he
began his legal career as a law clerk to Judge Rhesa Hawkins Barksdale
of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. A Jackson
native with deep roots in Oktibbeha and Clay Counties, Lucien and his
wife Bethany have one son, Liam, and are expecting a daughter in
February 2018.

Lucien is a homerun for the post! Super smart, patriotic and conservative!
Not a good start - the Governor can't nominate the chairman, as said on this release.. He recommended Smith, but an actual committee member nominated him. Let's hope Lucien doesn't follow in his predecessors footsteps and fail to recognize the actual role a governor plays in the party's organization.
3:32, what in the HELL are you rambling on about? What is your point? Predecessor was fine. Everyone knows the role of the Party and the Governor.
Very professional person. Will help calm difficult waters.
Terrific guy for the job.
The old RINOs "elected" a younger RINO to lead their establishment cabal. LOL LOL
yeah 5:26p, meet the new boss, same as the old boss....
Allow me to speak for 90% of the people reading this blog and 99% of the citizens and voters in this state. Who the hell ever heard of this guy, the last guy, the position or it's value to the common man?
Great guy but horrible people skills. This is politics not an anti-social organization. He had all the money and support in the Treasure race and couldn't make the run off. What was his number one problem? His personality. Failure to connect with people. As I said, nice guy but we need someone who likes to engage with the voters. Nosef was horrible at it. Poor Lucien. This won't end well.
6:44 - Please read the post prior to yours. Mmmmm, thanks.
I was at Ms State with both his mother and his father. This alone makes me proud to have him in the republican party. He has his on merits of course. It is time for the state of Mississippi to take a good look at him.
6:20 & 6:44 - I can see how you would have a hard time connecting with this guy. He’s highly intelligent, well educated, and well spoken. That’s basically the kiss of death for a Republican in MS.
Lucien is an outstanding choice. He understands the nuances of politics and the importance to the party of fundraising and developing candidates. He's smart as hell and has an excellent grasp on public policy and the legislative process, not to mention his experience in both the executive and judicial branches of government. The party could not have made a better vote.
Smith is an excellent choice.
Can anybody name the last two Animal Control Officers for the City of Pearl?
So, I will attempt to answer some of 6:20's questions. Most all of the likely donors to the party have heard of Lucien. And the reason this position matters is because the position SHOULD be the political arm that advances Republican ideas and thoughts through the election of people into office. So, I think the election of conservatives and free market advocates into office can help the average guy -- and hopefully we can step that up a little instead of settling for every William Winter voter that decides it is time to join his or her white friends in the Republican party.
Conservatives? The MSGOP is not conservative.
8:32 AM, "...instead of settling for every William Winter voter that decides it is time to join his or her white friends in the Republican party."
WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY? AND WHATEVER DO YOU MEAN? I HAVE GREAT RESPECT FOR FORMER GOVERNOR WILLIAM WINTER AND SOME MEASURE OF RESPECT FOR THOSE WHO VOTED FOR HIM IN THE PAST. YOU ASSUME THAT NONE OF HIS VOTERS WERE WHITE? AND YOU ASSUME THAT THERE ARE ONLY WHITE PEOPLE IN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY? I HOPE I DON'T KNOW YOU.
6:44 PM, Sometimes those working and running things behind the scenes are not the ones that can be elected to public office. Frequently, it requires two different personalities. As for Lucien, we'll see...
I'm sure Lucien is "super smart, patriotic and conservative" as some here claim but provide no support. What's his track record professionally after college? How long has he been in private practice? A year? As a professional party man, Lucien seems to represent the next generation of the same MS GOP establishment, which serves the white moneyed elite. The political winds, in case you haven't noticed, appear to have diverged. Populism is ascendant and the brand of MS GOP'ism may or may not be immune. In any case, he is a very sensible bet for those in political control of the state who wish to install their clones.
