Congressman Bennie Thompson's Chief of Staff can't seem to stay out of trouble. Roll Call reported yesterday:
A congressional staffer has been charged with falsifying a security clearance form, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced Wednesday evening.
Isaac Lanier Avant faces up to five years in prison for not disclosing on a security clearance form that he had failed to pay income taxes. Avant served as chief of staff for Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., and worked as deputy staff director and staff director the House Committee on Homeland Security.
Thompson is the top Democrat on the panel and Avant had to fill out a security clearance form for his work on the committee, known as the Standard Form 86, “Questionnaire for National Security Positions.”
The indictment alleges that Avant did not disclose that he had previously failed to file income taxes. In January, Avant was sentenced to four months of prison time for failing to file income tax returns, and must pay nearly $150,000 to the IRS. Avant’s prison sentence was to be served every weekend over a period of 12 months.
It is not clear if Avant is still employed by Thompson’s office. Rest of article.

Not clear if he's still employed? Why of course he is. Probably been promoted by now.
@5:25 AM, why don't you withhold judgement until we have all of the facts. Filling out an SF 86 with 100% accurate information is next to impossible. Even Cabinet members in the last few presidential administrations have to go back and amend the form.
is this about jared? oh...no...that guy can do no wrong
Blame no one but all the white farmers in the Delta who keep helping this guy get elected so they get a piece of the pie.
Until Jared Kushner goes down, then the bar is set low for ethics in Washington.
This is selective outrage at its finest.
8:33- I think we should expect the staff of our members of congress to pay
their taxes and not lie on security forms. Remember that this man knew he
had not paid his income taxes for multiple years so I'm guessing he did the same
on his state taxes also.
Justice for Tyrion is full of shit - I've had a security clearance for my entire adult life and have filled out at least 20 SF-86 forms and made countless submissions to e-QIP. The form is very straight forward and includes explicit instructions for what is expected to be included. Some people just don't want to follow the rules. My issue is with a government employee who fails to pay income tax - our tax status is verified EVERY year...
so you are telling me he serves his prison sentence on the weekends and is allowed to keep his government job? What a joke.
Next to impossible? How complicated is 'Have you been convicted of a felony?'
"Uh-Ruh, I wudden quite sure what that meant so I put NO.
8:11 - You're full of crap. There's not a white farmer in District II who supports that clown. What you can blame it on is the 75% gerrymandered voting block of black democrats. It's the Pete Perrys of Politics who allow that kind of crap to happen.
7:49 -- I filled out and updated 86's multiple times during my government career. They're straightforward but you do have to take the time to fill them out accurately & completely. If you gloss over the form and then sign it, it really means you're just incompetent, lazy, or untrusworthy -- pick one. The system allows honest mistakes or omissions to be amended as needed. It is also designed (maybe not efficiently as it could be) to catch liars and slackers...
It's the Pete Perrys of Politics who allow that kind of crap to happen.
And it is the "Pete Perrys of Politics" who exploit black Democrats when the RINOs need a Hail Mary pass to win the game.
If you can't accurately & honestly fill out a required security form, should you really be Chief of Staff for anyone? This seems very basic to me.
This guy is probably flying around the Country every weekend to various Fe'ral prisons on Bennies gubmint jet,"Catfish 1",to promote "Uncle Bennie's Fried Catfish Mix" with a big ole prison wide fish fry. Bennie aint stupid, didn't give his companion the nickname "Tartar Sauce" for nothin' you know.

and you are right
But long as Jared Kushner is running around D.C. with an A-1 security clearance and he has selective memory when it comes to the same form - how we are going to be hypercritical of Benny's staff?
Either Trump and his people need to go, or his administration needs to terminate staff that does not follow the rules.
What's good for the goose is good for the gander. No more double standards.
I love Pete Perry. He keeps Nazi's like Chris McDaniel and his redneck groupies in line.
12:01 p.m. Please give specifics while you rattle on about Kushner. Don't just toss out the weakest bullet-point in your bag of non-tricks. The story about Bennie's Boy is straightforward and factual. "Running around D.C. with selective memory" smacks of Rachel Maddow.
