It is definitely true a good deed never goes unpunished in Jackson. Exhibit A: Paul Moak Honda.
Paul Moak Honda spent millions of dollars renovating the dealership. A grand reopening will be held on February 25. The CEO of Honda and other dignitaries will attend. It is truly a big deal for the dealership and to some degree, the city of Jackson.
It is not an understatement to say the roads in this mini-business district are falling apart. The 1% Sales Tax Commission approved spending $350,000 to repave the roads around the dealership and Cowboy Maloney's: Larson, Vine, Harding, Monroe, Foley, Moody, and Harris Streets.
Commissioners in December lobbied the Horhn administration to resurface the roads before the grand re-opening as they wanted to help Jackson put on its best face when major corporate CEO's come to town.
The Horhn administration acceded to the request and work began last week. One may wonder how work began so quickly. The city has an agreement with Hinds County for performing road work. The county in turn has a term contract with AJ Construction. The order was given and the order was filled. The milling and resurfacing will be completed before the big day.
Enter the Jackson City Council. Public Works Director Lorenzo Anderson informed the Public Works Committee about the project at its February 5 meeting even though committee approval was not needed. Council Members Ashby Foote (1), Tina Clay (2), Lashia Brown-Thomas (6), Brian Grizzell (4), Vernon Hartley (5), and Kevin Parkinson (7) were present.
Several Council members erupted in anger when they heard about the project. Councilwoman Brown-Thomas exclaimed "Well, I have pretty bad streets too," when Mr. Anderson said "The streets around there are pretty bad."
Ms. Brown-Thomas asked "why these streets were chosen" after the Public Works Director explained the Honda CEO visit. Mr. Grizzell jumped in; "I understand the concept of sweeping around the porch but the city has too many other needs."
Mr. Foote defended the project, pointing out the city repaved roads for the National Folk Festival. He said it was important for the city to make a good impression. He noted the dealership had been in Jackson for over 50 years. The Councilman's remarks did not faze Ms. Brown-Thomas at all as she replied she had constituents have "lived here longer than what you are talking about, okay?"
Ward 2 Councilwoman supported the project as well, observing Paul Moak Honda paid millions of dollars in sales taxes.
"My folks don't care about a CEO from Honda coming. We couldn't save the Porsche dealership, we couldn't save the Mercedes deanship but now we want to do all this and invest all this around a motel, a Waffle House that got shut down, and I mean, that street's been falling down for a long time and I get it. $350,000 could easily fill some potholes in Wards 3,4, 5, and 6. We gotta do better. This is unfair," said City Council President Brian Grizzell.
Kingfish note: Why do businesses leave Jackson? Why indeed as Mr. Grizzell said it all. The CEO of a major corporation will visit Jackson to honor a local dealership. One can only imagine the impression the sight of crumbling roads would make.
The 1% Commission recognized the problem, no surprise as businessmen sit on the Commission instead of government employees and loud-mouthed community activists who know nothing about anything but are experts on everything, and stepped up to the plate to help Paul Moak Honda and Jackson. In other words, the doers got something done while the talkers did just that, talk. Shades of when Montgomery tried to get Patton fired for crossing the Rhine in one night while ole Monty spent two months planning his own crossing.
Mr. Grizzell was right in that the Porsche and Mercedes dealerships left Jackson. However, he neglected to mention Jackson did not put up a fight to keep those dealerships while Ridgeland offered them TIF packages and other incentives. Businesses do tend to go where they are appreciated. Under Mr. Grizzell's logic, Jackson should do nothing to help businesses in case they leave. Yeah.
Such treatment of businesses that pay millions of dollars in taxes by Jackson's political leadership is almost a tradition. Lowes wanted to go to the Carmax building in North Jackson. Jackson wouldn't give it TIF's while Ridgeland happily obliged.
Puckett Machinery just wanted some cutouts on Highway 80 yet Harvey Johnson and his people wouldn't return their phone calls. Mr. Speed told me at the time it was his understanding Puckett paid $2 million in sales taxes to Jackson. Hell, Jackson practically chased Northpark Mall away to Ridgeland.
Of course, these people will still be complaining when the next major business leaves Jackson. Maybe they should go look in the mirror.
It is also unfortunate that Parkinson did not defend the project that benefits his ward. It should have been Parkinson pointing out how much money the city gets in sales tax revenue from the dealership and how much it is spending on the remodeling. In other words, investing in Jackson.
Fortunately for Jackson, it has a Mayor who has a better understanding of economic development.
These people will NEVER be satisfied! It’s like offering a Nile Crocodile your hand and hoping they will be satisfied with that instead of consuming your entire body!
It’s a race driven. The moron president and the ward 6 rep don’t know that ward 1 NE Jackson is the piggy bank. They want whites to shut up an just pay taxes. But without this money the city couldn’t afford to keep the lights on. Stuff it Brian
North State Animal Clinic was purchased by an out of state corporation. They visited the site and decided to close it because of the surroundings and the building. People who used the vet forever were outraged. I don’t think they even see what’s around them anymore. That stretch of State Street is horrible. People here don’t know what a real city is supposed to look like.
It really does seem that the majority of the residents of this town want to make it rival the worst in 3rd World countries. They have no understanding of why it is a good thing to make a place attractive in order to impress a company that might choose to locate something here. No, all they care about is free water and stuff
No you must understand Democrat political thought. Actually Black Democrat political thought. The people of their district have votes which keep them in office. A business might have one or two or maybe even a few more, but the only priorities are the votes that keep them in office. Advancing the city economically is secondary at best. Pandering to the vote is paramount and the voters no little or nothing about economic development until they lose their jobs. They could not care less about making business comfortable.
I left Jackson when this sort of racist leadership first began to emerge. Prior admins made it very clear to me, years ago, that Jackson is no longer hearing complaints from white people. Happy I am retired and long gone but this cannot be a shock to anyone? Right? Next!
This article is such an excellent piece that I will take it on myself the print it out & mail it to each city council in Jackson. $7.00 in stamps + paper, envelopes, & ink well spent.
The average Jackson voter won't be purchasing their next Mercedes at the dealership because Facebook Marketplace works everywhere. Got lots of them G wagon and AMG there for 15k and less. Some even have a title! Don't need no fancy roads for that.
The locals don't need to buy their Mercedes or Porsche parts at the dealer when there's Pull-A-Part and Vato Zone. Plus Rock Auto delivers right on your dorstep. Just be sure to beat the porch pirates.
I find it telling that ward 6 council rep has the nerve to say… a lot of bad roads are in my ward too. South Jackson. Your ward 6 contributes nearly nothing to the city in terms of money. So sit down. You’re a fool!!! But she cries about businesses fleeing her ward. Go figure. Especially grocery chains. They all open in ward one or Fondren. Wait for it… the race card will come out soon on her behalf
I’m not very surprised KF allowed your bigoted and ignorant comment. White people, white democrats, white labour ministers in Canada and the UK, EU, Japan, etc, are all just as capable of the same pandering bullshit as black democrats in America.
It was a mistake to spend millions to renovate that building and Paul Moak will regret it. I hate driving by the gas station at the corner of High and Greymont and seeing the mentally ill standing around. Will they relocate those homeless folks so the CEO doesn’t witness that mess? What was Honda and Subaru thinking?
Who cares about the decline in the tax base when a big, bad white owned business leaves? The most important thing is that we support our black owned businesses, tax revenue be damned. Black city leaders just can't help but to get in their own damn way.
This is racism at its finest!!! Grizzell is a racist fool and ward 6 rep is a true idiot. You are a charity ward! Go cry to someone about Capitol police again. Then ask I wonder why my ward 6 is a food desert. Duh you moron
Don't forget the huge amount that Paul Moak pays in property taxes annually in addition to sales taxes. I have my car serviced there & I must say, all streets in that area needed repaving badly. Now if the city can just paint new lane lines on High Street & do all the restriping needed.
Low iq decisions, not appreciating business, not even trying to keep or entice business to the city is unbelievable. Jackson is why Jackson is failing. They just don’t care. Why should we?
My family moved their residence to Madison county, and business to Rankin county, back in the 1990's, just to stop having to pay taxes to support the hostile Hinds county clown show. It blows my mind that people are still investing in Hinds county.
Guess y'all missed Tina Clay supporting it. Vernon Hartley didn't back Grizzell. Frankly, Anderson should have kept quiet and not told the committee about it.
Oh, I did talk to Stokes about it. He was not happy, wanted to go apologize to Honda. This is Grizzell grandstanding and wanting to run for Mayor.
I want to create a ChatGPT agent and then physically run for mayor on the grounds that I will allow the GPT agent to do the decision making. Basically, I am the meat puppet for the AI. I would prove that my AI agent is a better mayor than this city has had in 40 years. This will open up to the city council doing the same. People will run as a meat puppet for their AI agents and I bet we could turn this hot, racist, dumpster fire around!
Have the city council do like they always do. Let the streets rot until the TAX paying companies move out of the city and the county. Like Nissan, etc.Madison county is booming thanks to the wisdom of Hinds county decision making personnel. By the way, have any of these decision makers in Jackson taken the interstate to Vicksburg and seen the construction just out of the city limits.
I only shop at 3 locations in Jackson. The Country Squire, the Subaru dealership, and Whole Foods. I wish all 3 would leave Jackson, but I know the Country Squire can't because the other metro cities and counties are anti-smoking. But the subaru dealer and whole foods should GTFO and move to Flowood like everything else.
Grizzell is a racist and a clown show. Or he’s just not well versed in development and economics. Hell, maybe he’s all of the above. As for ward 6 council member. She’s a box of rocks representing a ward that only takes.
Can't see the forest through the trees......increase sales tax revenue, fix more problems with a growing revenue stream. The city has to take care of the hands that feed it. Our city council is just very typical, still having no clue
The joke of a city council is a main reason most dealerships have moved to Rankin, Flowood, Madison and Ridgeland. Let’s keep the few that remained without punishing them for staying
It's amazing that Woodrow Wilson from I-55 to State Street can't get paved. Countless people travel this less than a mile stretch going to UMMC, VA Hospital, Murrah HS, National Guard on Riverside Drive, etc. and it will absolutely ruin you're car. Ridiculous.
Your first two sentences should be read, and reread. That instance typifies ALL investment, today, in Jackson. Far-off people think they can snap-up bargains or get great tax write-offs or get visas for their relatives or harvest grant monies - or some other angle.
But it ends-up with them becoming immured in the sticky local "culture", and unable to free themselves, except at great cost. There is no successful "flipping". There is no successful skimming. The lawsuits and Marxist regulations (and other legal entanglements), mean that the write-offs, in the final analysis, end up COSTING.
Our granddaughters have their Russian, Yiddish, Calculus, and Hebrew lessons in Brooklyn (from active participants, rather than from pedants). The tutors' families, knowing where I'm from, and mostly involved in arcane and tedious methods of extracting money from distant real estate, ask me about Jackson. Those prices look so TEMPTING. I have to explain...
Save your money February 18, 2026 at 11:49 AM Jackson is in deep do do. Quit fighting to try to improve it. The culture is against you. Let it rot until it becomes a ghost town & a doughnut city!
Whole Foods isn’t going anywhere plus highland village is booming. New restaurants opening up recently plus it’s the JA prep country club ole miss rah rah housewives of ne Jackson that keep it going. They aren’t leaving especially Whole Foods. They are t in any suburban areas nationwide all urban stores liberal to a core
The person at fault here is the leadership at Paul Moak for not leaving the sinking Titanic known as Jackson. His or her lack of vision for the dealership is right up there with the city leaders' lack of vision and leadership.
If you are the CEO of a prominent business in Jackson -- and you do not have short-term plans to relocate away from the city -- you need to be relieved of your duties. At the end of the day -- it's not political, not racial, not social -- only financial -- and it will never get any better. The very best hope at this point is to maintain the status quo -- and that's not happening.
Grizzell is a clown and his way of thinking is EXACTLY why Jackson is in the state it's in. It's unbelievable to me that he thinks his stances will help his constituents. You HAVE to build a tax based and business base and cater to them. Those in turn generate the revenue you need to help your constituents. How can he not understand this? He and Brown-Thomas are idiots. I hope their constituents vote them out of office.
Ain't shit in Ward 6! Hate we were annexed into this cesspool. Council woman you can't make someone operate a business in your ward. Perhaps if you brought in National Guard to coordinate cleanup efforts and to get the homeless people under control along with tearing down the blighted property, fix the traffic lights, cut down the mutilated trees caused by Entergy contractors relocate Bebe's badass kids, and get us some competent leadership, then maybe we can at least get a farmers market to come in. This is not rocket science and it's not about race!
I ordered the supplies I needed from Rock Auto to do an oil change on my 1981 Jeep and I am not even joking they sent me a “New Old Stock” AMC Eagle oil filter from 1982. I didn’t use it. I’m keeping it as a collector’s item.
Council members pandering to the public that pay little or no taxes and where as Council members act like saviors to the little man just need to shut the hell up! Fix the streets around Honda Dealership and tell your district people about when their streets will be fixed. These same Council members have been fixing pot holes and paving streets for years! When something good is happening in Jackson make it happen! And please stop pandering to your constituents! I’ll bet Paul Moak paid their water bill!!!
Paul Moak aka Paul Jr. is clueless and out of touch as most of the people who post here. Oh wait, Subaru is Paul Moak as well Mr./Mrs. I only shop at three places in Jackson. The dealership shed Volvo to the McCartney group and is now in Brandon. With the other two Honda dealers splitting the lion’s share of Honda customers Paul Jr. is doing what the governor told us…hold out because Jackson will continue to decline and investors with will start swooping up land/businesses for pennies on the dollar. Y’all will continue to bash and when the resurgence happens y’all will be right back loving Jackson because you absolutely hate your Karen run HOAs.
I had some business with Hemphill when they redid N. State Street north of Northside Drive. It took a while and the road and sidewalks looked great until they didn't. The Hemphill rep said they would be back in a few years cleaning out the storm drains because the city never would clean the streets. I don't even think Jackson owns a street sweeper. Drive that road today and the wide sidewalks are full of weeks and the new curbs filled in with dirt and trash. Water now runs down the street instead of the curb. It looks like crap.
Lashia Brown-Thomas lol… please sit down & stay quiet. Your ward provides nothing beneficial to the city of Jackson. It’s a burden to be honest. So sit there quietly and let the ones that pay and provide the money make decisions. Makers and takers. I’ll give you a clue as to the one your ward is…
$350,000 is a very small percentage of the annual revenue generated by the 1% sales tax. Paul Moak has generated significant amounts for the 1% sales tax revenue. Poor people live on some of the streets to be resurfaced. The City Council should applaud a business that invested millions to stay in Jackson and continues to generate tax revenue. Resurfacing a few streets around their business is a smart decision and a small price to pay for the continued stream of sales and property taxes. The business people on the Commission obviously get it.
This is Grizzell grandstanding and wanting to run for Mayor.
Pudgy is bugged that his brother was sent packing before the new police chief arrived. I think the jury is still out on Horhn but kicking embedded political operatives to the curb and getting the dirty work done in advance was a very smart decision.
Plus, Pudgy had his nose buried up the Lumumbas'. He can run for Mayor, he'll lose.
I don’t live in Jackson so I had to look up Brian Grizzell. His city bio says he has both a Ph.D. and an Ed.D., so two doctoral degrees. There is the mention of a consulting business but overall the bio is pretty thin.
As Joey Tribiani said about Will, the character portrayed by Brad Pitt in a ‘Friends’ Thanksgiving episode, “Who the hell is this guy?”
As for the angry councilwoman, she seems to fit the stereotype I have long held for most women who have hyphenated last names.
The streets they are talking about have individuals who don't pay property tax and their houses look like crap. I agree pave the streets for Paul Moak. Hopefully the CEO won't venture too far because just down the road he will probably get robbed
@1:30, no, you are not blind as you see there are two "Vine Streets" in Jackson. But this is not at all a one-off occurance; there are several streets in Jackson with duplicate names. Some of them do distinguish by being a 'street' or an 'avenue' or a 'lane' - but not all.
You must have missed the discussion on JJ a few days ago about the shooting on Crestview, and all the folks who thought (1) it was unusual, or (2) that 911 couldn't figure it out, or (3) that the folks who called it in might not have distinguished what/where the shooting was - street, avenue, lane.....
In that instance, the local who lived on or near Crestview might well not have bothered to pay attention to the distinguishing factor of street or avenue, just doing as many of us would do in saying they lived on "Crestview".
Besides the repeated use of names for streets, there are a number of places where the street exists and stops at a dead end. But a mile or so away, in what is basically a straight line, there is another street with the same name; in those cases, the duplicated street name would have been correct if the street was continuous but they aren't.
BTW, it appears that the 'other' Vine Street, up around the Tougaloo Community Center, was repaved recently as well - even though the properties within that neighborhood (where all the streets were repaved just as in this business district) pay little or nothing in property taxes and zero in sales taxes.
Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything). Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up. In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production. Note: Security provided by INS.

Sonjay Poontang and his band headline the night with a special steel cage, no time limit "loser must leave town" bout between Alan Lange and "Big Cat"Donna Ladd following afterwards. Kamikaze will perform his new song F*** Bush, he's still a _____. Did I mention there was no referee? Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices. Robbie Bell will perform Her two latest songs: My Best Friends are in the Media and Mama's, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be George Bell. Sid Salter of The Clarion-Ledger will host "Pin the Tail on the Trial Lawyer", sponsored by State Farm.

However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. Tackleberry will be on hand for an autograph session. KIM Waaaaaade will be passing out free titles and deeds to crackhouses formerly owned by The Wood Street Players.
If you get tired come relax at the Fox News Tent. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both will entitle you to free drinks.Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required, just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '07 is for EVERYONE!!!

Isn't that the responsibility of JPS (Jackson Public schools)? You know, the organization that spends the tax revenue generated by local businesses?
As for some on the city counsel, Lumumba's been out for several months now, so someone has to pick up the mantle of incompetence.

It's amazing that Woodrow Wilson from I-55 to State Street can't get paved. Countless people travel this less than a mile stretch going to UMMC, VA Hospital, Murrah HS, National Guard on Riverside Drive, etc. and it will absolutely ruin you're car. Ridiculous.
" Larson, Vine, Harding, Monroe, Foley, Moody, and Harris Streets."
Am I blind, or is there 2 separate vine st in Jackson .
What surprises me is that a car dealer would make this kind of investment and expect any different. Jackson is gonna be Jackson.
It is crazy how many businesses that started in Jackson have fled to neighboring cities in Rankin and Madison county since 2000.
All politicians are political whores always willing to sell "it" to whomever is willing to pay.
Yet another black v white issue. Wearisome.
I wonder if Brain Grizzell reads this blog? Then again I’m not sure his reading proficiency would allow him to
So unless all of the streets can be fixed, then none can be fixed?
That's some street logic right there.
>Wut about da po folk
Well if your po folks generated revenue maybe they'd be prioritized higher.
Porche is relocating to the lot just south of Patty Peck in Ridgeland. IF they haven't left already. Been working on that land for about a year.
Yet, after all this, they will still vote the same people in office expecting different outcomes.
Why is it that the people who contribute the least, bitch and moan the most?
Too bad they don’t give the councilperson a percentage of power based on there ward contribution of taxes pain into the city
This mentality is the reason I haven't spent a penny in Jackson for the last 30 years and won't again.
I know Franklin does. Hi Brad! Enjoy the culture.
Honestly Shad White should do a forensic investigation on Grizzell. Everyone knows he does not do anything in his day job at JPS.
Grizzell only sees color and it’s not green. He’s further proven that he’s not only dumb but a racist. Same as his friend Otha
Always offended and never ashamed
Monroe Street, Greymont, Canton Heights, and others fit that description.
