Last week a son died too soon and unexpectedly. Friends and family continue to mourn the loss. The deepest and most sorrowful pain anyone can ever know comes through losing what can never be recovered in this life. Hope is our only salvation from mourning with deep sobbing and writhing from the core of our being.
Caleb Henry Thompson, 14 years old, died suddenly last week. He was meticulous in all he did including in his relationships with friends and family. Caleb was raised in the company of a godly extended family. He has received countless accolades from so many family and friends, even those he’d just encountered. He was that kind of guy.
Caleb was especially aware of those around him who had not trusted Jesus to give them eternal life. He wanted everyone to trust Christ along with him so they could go to heaven together. Caleb had already professed his faith in Jesus Christ, knowing Jesus had given him eternal life. He moved seamlessly from this life into the next realm looking forward to new adventures and discoveries with Jesus. He knew the rest of his family would follow.
Psalm 8:2 perhaps captures Caleb’s expressions about heaven. “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Thy name in all the earth, Who hast displayed Thy splendor above the heavens! From the mouth of infants and nursing babes Thou hast established strength, because of Thine adversaries, to make the enemy and the revengeful cease.”
Caleb has been a citizen of the kingdom of heaven a long time. Matthew 19:14 “But Jesus said, ‘Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these…’” that is, to such as Caleb!
For those of us left behind for the moment, Paul compares our sorrows now with our coming glory in Romans 8:18-25:
“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not for its own will, but because of Him who subjected it in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons the redemption of our body. For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one also hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.”
Caleb was a friend to all he knew, and we know he wants all of us to join him when the time comes. He wanted that in his earthly life. How much more does he want all of us to join him there to see the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ in the heavenly places?
