The plot thickens in the story of the former Jackson Academy student killed during a home invasion at the Park at Inverness apartments early Sunday morning. Thickens because the apartment was the home of a Jackson Academy student, thus making it less likely the crime was random in nature.
15 year-old Kaden Young and 18 year-old Quintavion Myles broke into the apartment at 2:30 AM Sunday. Expecting to find the apartment vacant, they were as surprised as the female resident when they burst in wearing ski masks. Frightened she was but the woman stood her ground as she shot Young. Young succumbed to his injuries.
JPD captured Myles later that day and charged him with burglary of an occupied dwelling and murder (under the felony-murder rule).
Jackson Municipal Court Judge Virginia Watkins denied bond for Myles on the murder charge and set his bond at $150,000 for the burglary charge.
The victim is the mother of a student at Jackson Academy who is an upperclassman. He enrolled at Jackson Academy in second grade.
Law enforcement sources said Young and Myles (allegedly) thought the student and his mother would be out of town, making their home ripe for the taking. The son was indeed gone but the mother present when the home invasion took place. It was a fatal mistake that cost a young man his life and will probably send another young man to prison for decades.
Young was a member of the Jackson Academy football team last fall as a freshman but did not return for the spring semester. There will be no more semesters for the Dorgan Street resident as he paid the ultimate price for his foolishness.
Kingfish note: Make no mistake, this was not a random crime as Kaden Young tried to victimize someone he knew from school. It's all fun and games until the bullets start flying and fly they did as the former Raider found out Sunday.

I'm not connected, but a JA parent regardless. I pay full tuition, with a small discount for a second child. We are involved in the athletics program and we are members of the booster club.
This entire situation has rattled my family. It was well known in the JA community after this tragic incident that the burglary attempt was on another JA student. I can tell you that the administration is embarrassed, but they aren't planning to do anything. Well, here's a suggestion.
To the Jackson Academy board: There are about four of you that need to step down immediately. Others need to apologize for being part of this circus.
To Eddie Wettach: You are not even one year into being headmaster and your leadership has been the worst in Jackson Academy's history. You should resign effective May 31 and let the school have a proper search for a headmaster.
To several members of the athletic staff: You should re-evaluate why you are coaching. You are supposed to be developing young men and women and most of you are not. Poaching talent from other schools to win games (looking at you football, volleyball and baseball) is what has caused all this disruption in the school's focus and mission. Whether it is legal or not is not the question - does it serve the mission of the school and it does not.
Teachers, Admissions and Communications professionals at JA: You are part of this problem as well. I know that some of you stood up against this and paid a price. Many parents see you and appreciate you. Once a new board is in place, hopefully you will get an apology.

But…..NOW is the time to step up and make the correct decision of taking control of this once phenomenal private school away from the meathead coaches and this failure to lead headmaster. A full audit of JA’s financials should be ordered and a new mission statement created immediately in order to get out ahead of a potential catastrophe.

Man, seems to be a certain recently released email from a former student's mom is ringing true. Hurt feelings or not, she's right on the money. This couldn't have happened at a worse time from a JA public relations standpoint. These kids are watching their classmates at school and using it as an opportunity.

It appears that Carolyn Voyles has more insight into what is going on at JA than the administration does. JA needs to do some housecleaning. The MAIS also needs to step up and take this opportunity to clean up the rules surrounding recruiting.

We have a daughter and a son at Jackson Academy. We are in the lower school. This scares us to death. We are not well to do family and are happy to be there. It’s a struggle for us each month to pay tuition but we thought it was the best situation for our kids. I am rethinking that situation. I’m also wondering if we should add security to our house or start arming ourselves. This is scary for a family at Jackson Academy

It is quite possible that JA may be too far gone, but the school is too important to the city of Jackson and the current students/families not to try to save it. Here is what should happen to give the school a fighting chance.
1. Immediate Staff Resignations:
Eddie Wettach announces his resignation effective May 31st. Search committee for new head of school to consist of parents not on the board, Peter Jernberg and Keith Branning. Current board members have proven they are not qualified or capable of running an effective search process.
Athletic Director resigns effective immediately. Brandt encouraged the coaches to recruit and should be held accountable for his role in creating this mess.
Head football coach resigns effective immediately. Head football recruiter/offensive coordinator already jumped ship. Head baseball coach already jumped ship. Tell the attorney paying for the recruits that this will no longer be allowed and if he continues, his son will not be allowed to participate in JA sports.
2. Board Resignations: Past chairman, current chairman and executive committee board members step down from the board effective immediately. A community meeting should be held for all JA parents. Anyone interested in running for the board should be given the opportunity to speak at the meeting for a few minutes. Parents should vote at the end of the meeting to elect and fill the 4 open board seats.
3. JA issues a public apology to Mrs Voyles for smearing her name and sharing snippets of a private email to try to make her out to be racist. It's obvious her concerns were valid and instead of addressing them, you drug her through the mud.
4. Immediately adopt an interim policy that requires any high school (9-12) student transferring (public and private) to JA to sit out of sports for one year. If MAIS won't do its job, there is nothing stopping JA from leading the way to end this madness. The newly elected board can evaluate the interim policy and decide whether to make it permanent.
I am sure some wearing blue glasses will view these steps as extreme or unnecessary...My response would be how sure are you about that? It's a given at this point that more families than usual will leave JA after this school year because of recent events. If you don't think so, go ask people outside of the Sheffield bubble...Exactly how many families will leave? Only time will tell, but nothing is more important to a parent than a child's safety and well being. Dismiss those concerns at your own risk.

Myles is charged with murder under the "felony murder" rule? I call BS. First, there was no murder. The lady who shot Young was acting within her legal rights under the Castle Doctrine. If there was a murder (there wasn't) it wasn't committed by Myles' accomplice, Young. This charge will be summarily dismissed.

There are a lot of great houses for sale in Madison and Brandon. You don’t have to pay 12k+ each year to beat Prep or MRA. Your kid can attend Brandon, MC, NWR, Pisgah for free. You will have some complaints, but nobody at these schools will recruit the problems. You can save the 12k+. Your child will still be able to attend MSU, ole Miss or USM, and they will even outperform the JA, Prep, and MRA kids

Public school guy here just keeping up with the shit show that JA has apparently turned into. Has JA not made a statement on any of this? Is that their way of saying recruits are second rate students and we only love them during the season? Outside of sports do they even consider them students? I may be all wrong but does this not give some type of “plantation” vibe we’re the cotton fields? Has Mississippi Today even been paying attention to all of this?
to 3:49: I am a former JA graduate from a long, long time ago. My mother taught there for many years. It is not the same school anymore. I mean this in all sincerity... If your kids are that young & paying is a struggle each month plus you don't feel good about JA----find another option, even homeschooling, if your public school district is bad. There are many good homeschool groups/parents in the metro/surrounding areas. Your children can get a quality education from another avenue. If you are in a bad public school district and cannot move, figure something else out. Yes, get security. I have avoided it long enough but I am ready to put some cameras on my house. Just about everyone has them where I am and I think it is time for us to do that. Something happened at a neighbors house and it made me really think----I'm being foolish now for no cameras. It is a different world now.
Regarding the poor JA mom who had to face these guys...If two males came in my house in ski masks in the wee hours (or any hour), my first assumption is they are going to rape or kill, along with steal or try or who knows what & we'll go down trying to defend ourselves in the same way like that mom. Imagine if she had not been armed.

All of you young JA families need to go to the graduation in May. I attended two ceremonies in 2024: one at JA and one at Brandon. I can promise you that the Brandon ceremony had more solemnity than JA.
My point? You can get the same action FOR FREE in the suburbs, except that the public school principals at least have the stones to tell people to be quiet.
And for the love of all things holy, JA. Dorgan Street? Really?!? That should’ve been an automatic no.
JA has had WEAK leadership ever since Jernberg retired. Initially Cliff kling was hired ( what a joke) then the parade of headmasters from Alabama and Florida that had ZERO clue what JAs mission or history had been. Weak headmasters and a board that was only concerned for their own children’s playing time with no concern for the future of the school contributed to the rapid decline of what was once a fantastic school. There have been meetings for Years with concerned alumni and paying parents— JA didnt listen. These issues did not happen overnight!!!! Unfortunately the future does not look good for JA and being located in the city of Jackson isn’t helping matters.
