Note to readers: Apologies for not updating this story sooner. JJ was unaware of Mr. Wellborn's death until last week.
Death rescued a Jackson attorney from prosecution after he shot two intruders at his rental property in Jackson.
JPD charged attorney Bradley Wellborn with two counts of aggravated assault last week after he shot two intruders on his rental home on Cedarhurst Drive in April 2023. He said he shot one of the intruders after he pulled an asp on the lawyer. Mr. Wellborn explains his side of the story in an interview with WLBT.
A police affidavit alleges Wellborn shot Robert Woods and shot at Bonnie Hayes with a .357 magnum revolver. The Hinds County grand jury indicted him on two counts of aggravated assault in July 2023.
The case was assigned to Hinds County Circuit Judge Adrienne Wooten.
Bradley Allison Wellborn, age 50, of Jackson, MS, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2025, from complications of diabetes type 1. He was born March 17, 1974, in Jackson, son of the late James M. Wellborn and Barbara Wellborn, also of Jackson, MS.
Bradley was a 1992 graduate of Jackson Preparatory School where he excelled in athletics (wearing #63 on the championship football team), in academics (achieving National Merit Finalist), and in the arts (playing lead roles in musicals). A member of First Presbyterian Church, he was a faithful participant in youth group and went on two mission trips to Mexico. He also was an Eagle Scout in their troop #18 and loved his summers spent at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
Bradley earned a B.A. in history from the University of Mississippi in 1996. He loved supporting his rebels. He was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
After a sabbatical year spent traveling and learning Spanish, he returned to God’s country to begin his law studies at Ole Miss, earning his J.D. in 2000. After completing the US Navy’s Officer Indoctrination School, he proudly served his country as a Staff Judge Advocate from 2000-2004. As a JAG officer, he had many adventures, some he sought and others that found him.
He returned to Jackson and worked in several law firms until opening his own practice in 2006. He also founded a property management company, Capital Area Holdings.
Bradley was a true southern boy, loving his Ole Miss rebels, his dogs, his guns, his God. There wasn’t a problem he couldn’t fix or at least one he wouldn’t admit he couldn’t fix. He enjoyed a life of adventure whether scuba diving, exploring the jungles of Costa Rica, hunting, or simply driving too fast. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in his thirties, Bradley struggled to reconcile his fierce independence and active lifestyle with the limitations of his physical health.
A member of Redeemer Presbyterian Church, Bradley enjoyed the fellowship of the men’s group gatherings, campfires, and retreats. He also led Boy Scout troop 23 of Redeemer Church for several years.
Bradley brought laughter and liveliness to every situation. He could charm with his smile, captivate with his beautiful singing voice, and persuade (and often frustrate) with his passionate convictions. His sharp intellect and curious spirit were apparent in every conversation, and their absence will leave a void in all of us.
He is preceded in death by his father, James Wellborn and survived by his mother, Barbara Allison Wellborn; brother Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Marshall Wellborn (Suzanne) of Huntsville, AL; Half-siblings James Wellborn Jr. (Susan) of Greenwood; Carolyn Wellborn Brazil of Blairsville, GA; beloved nieces and nephews: Marshall, Elizabeth and Benton Wellborn of Huntsville; James M. Wellborn, III (Sara) Oxford, MS; Allison Wellborn Shepherd (Branden) Phoenix, AZ; Carolyn Wellborn Fowler (Joshua) New Orleans, LA; Bill Brazil (Margaret) Thomasville, GA, Caroline Brazil Workman (Rick) Blairsville, GA; and his faithful and beloved companion Zeus, a German Shepherd, who followed him everywhere and was at his side until the very end.
He was greatly loved and will be missed by the many diverse friends he made over the years. Bradley’s legacy will live on through the memories we share of him, and we rejoice in the promise of the perfect healing of heaven and the salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
A graveside service will be held at 10am on Saturday, February 22, at Lakewood Cemetery, 6000 Clinton Blvd, Jackson, MS. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 11am at Redeemer Presbyterian Church, 640 East Northside Drive, Jackson, MS.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Bradley’s honor to Redeemer Presbyterian Church.
Thanks to the reader who provided the tip on his death.

"Prosecutors finally withdrew the case in December 2025."
I just have no words.
Rest in peace, sir. Condolences to the family.
That's because the DA is only "part-time."
I was just thinking about how much more vigilantism we NEED in America and especially in a place like Jackson. But then they throw the book at you. Our country is so damn backwards. We have lost our way.
He was a very good man and dearly missed.
"Part time" DA?? Is that because the other 'part' of his life is dedicated to his alcoholism, or to the sins that being a diagnosed alcoholic has led him into: jet trips, yachts, strip joints?
I listened to his interview w/ local television… total and complete incompetence on the part of The Jackson Police Department. Sad.
@4:07. and soon to be "doing time."
I was told the same thing by Capitol Police when a vagrant trashed the outside of our carriage house adjacent to our home - nothing they can do because I don’t have a no trespassing sign posted. Infuriating and tragic for Mr.
Wellborn. My condolences to his loved ones.
.
RIP Bradley. Some health troubles were self inflicted...the ones broadcast on JJ and caught ink elsewhere were not. Re: the latter, you put up a helluva good fight for 39211.
JP '92.
The best people of a city/state/nation (like Mr Wellborn) will disapear while the worst people (Lumumba/Owens/Stokes) seem to linger long past any reasonable expiration date.
All private land is legally considered posted against trespassing,
even without physical signs, meaning you need permission to enter unless it's a public area, but posting signs or using purple paint provides stronger legal notice, defines boundaries, and can increase penalties for violators
Democrats are the party of crime. They are the modern day mafia. Democrats are evil and therefore take the side of the criminal in many cases. And people are fed up with it.
Taylor Sheridan knows it and in the last LM episode he inserted this very issue of idiot cops teaming up with an evil prosecutor, then taking the side of the criminal.
Republicans, bless their hearts, just can’t get the message out as to how evil and stupid the Democrat base is. Crime should be a winner issue with every single moral American with an IQ of 60.
RIP Mr. Wellborn.
This is so sad, thankful I no longer live in Jackson Ms. SMFH a Homicide Detective with a cell phone and a JCPenny Suit!
Just depends on what fool (detective shows up)!
Leave it to a Republican to turn a man's death into something political! You, and the rest of the Republican Party, have no soul!
No, you are not required to have a "No Trespassing" sign to prosecute someone for entering your shed and damaging property in Mississippi.
Under Mississippi law, trespassing occurs when someone knowingly enters the lands or premises of another without permission. While "No Trespassing" signs or purple paint markings are highly recommended to provide clear notice, they are not legally required to make a person liable for criminal trespass or damages.
Here is how Mississippi law applies to your situation:
Criminal Trespass (Without a Sign): Even without a sign, entering an enclosed building (like a shed) without consent is considered trespassing. A person who breaks into a structure is, at a minimum, trespassing.
Malicious Mischief (Damaging Property): Because they "trashed" the shed, the person can be charged with Malicious Mischief (Miss. Code § 97-17-87), which covers the willful or malicious destruction of personal or real property.
How to Handle It: You can call local law enforcement (sheriff or police) to report the incident. Having a locked door or a "no trespassing" sign helps prove the entry was "willful" (intentional).
Recommendation: While not required, posting signs or using purple paint (as per Mississippi's purple paint law) makes it easier to prosecute because it removes the defense of "I didn't know it was private property".
Ms Bullie snipes a vagrant-no effort at prosecution. She knew upfront it would be handled for her.
Police do nothing while emboldends the criminals and when they get too bold and killed then whoever did that must pay.
Jackson-you have a few monkey shit projects getting developed but you Jackson leaders should know how little you are thought of.
@7:35 Let's put aside for a moment that you're trying to make a partisan political point using a work of fiction. The sheriffs, DAs, mayors, and city council members whose jurisdiction cover Midland and Odessa, TX are ALL either Republicans or conservative independents. Certainly Taylor Sheridan is aware of this. What's your point again?
I took that scene to mean a couple of cops who beat their women were going to get Cooper.
Stupidity in jackson courts is strong!!!!!
@9:01, leave it to a Democrat that cares nothing at all about the rape and/or murder of innocents, even including children like 8-year-old Secoriea Turner and 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray…..to accuse the other party of having no soul. You Democrats love you some criminals, don’t you?
Speaking of no soul, did you see your fellow Democrat Don Lemon take part in storming a church with leftist agitator William Kelly screaming "you're doing nothing for your Somali brothers and sisters. You have a very easy life while people are starving, Shame!"???
Which Democrat group do you think Don Lemon and William Kelly fall into?
The Democrat Stupid group that can’t see the irony of accusing others of having a very easy life and not helping Somali’s right after the massive Minnesota fraud scandals with losses in the billions…..combined with IIhan Omar’s skyrocketing family wealth?
Or the Democrat Knows Better group but also knows their Democrat base is too dumb to understand how laughable the Democrat fake outrage is while Somali’s stole billions intended for poor people and Democrat Somali IIhan Omar got filthy rich in the process?
