Jackson Parks & Recreation Director Abram Muhammad announced their deaths at Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba's press conference today. (4:30 in video posted below)
Mr. Muhammad said staff found their deceased bodies last Thursday in the attic "of the barn in which they were housed. The parrots had been removed from their exhibit due to the cold weather. The Director said a mink got inside the attic and "caused them to expire." The bodies of the parrot were still intact.
The slaughter of the Amazon parrots was reported to the USDA as required by law.
The USDA also dinged the zoo over perry dogs in its December inspection:
When discussing the mechanism of daily observation of the black-tailed prairie dog colony, the keeper indicated that she does not use a reporting mechanism to determine the length of time that may pass between observation of each of the animals and could not confirm visualization of the black-tailed prairie dogs the day of inspection. Although normal during certain times of year for black-tailed prairie dogs to remain underground for longer periods of time, daily observation of animals is important to ensure that conditions that can negatively affect behavior, health, and well-being are identified timely and that accurate information is conveyed to the attending veterinarian.
Mr. Muhammad said the perry dogs were underground due to the extreme cold weather. The temperature ranged from the low to high- 40's on December 3, 2024. Staff was later able to observe five perry dogs. A camera was installed that will be checked three times a day.

Prairie Dogs?
Don’t you mean prairie dogs not perry dogs?
so minks are thrill killers and kill for fun?..............sounds like alot of people who live in jackson.
Per the National Weather Service, on December 3, 2024 the high @ JAN was 52 and the low was 31. Neither temp reading was anywhere near extreme.
That’s amazing. I didn’t know we still had a zoo in Jackson. Don’t tell Lumumba. He’ll want to give the feed contract to Richards Feed Co.
Usually a little colder than that in their home range. You know, on the Northern Parrys!
Sounds like a fox to me
