The Capitol Police issued the following statement.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting involving Capitol Police that occurred in the area of Pearl Street and President Street in Jackson, Mississippi.
An officer was patrolling the area when he was approached by a security guard who reported a subject carrying a weapon around businesses on State Street. The officer located the subject and attempted to make contact. The subject fled and a brief foot pursuit began. During the pursuit, the subject discharged his weapon at the officer, leading the officer to discharge his weapon, striking the subject. The subject was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No law enforcement officers received any serious physical injury.
MBI is currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office. This information is preliminary and subject to change.
Additional information may be provided at a later time.

If the police officer was shot at, why is he shooting for injury instead of to kill the threat? Now, taxpayers will be on the hook for this criminal for 2 decades.
A trip to Harvard will stop this type of behavior…
Get ‘em boys!
Great work, Cap PD. Guys are heroes. Saving our State Capital!
Hey Liz, more good news! You're having a great week.
Some officers need to spend more time at the shooting range
Since when was carrying a firearm in downtown jackson illegal? I know its capitol police, but the city of Jackson already lost an open carry lawsuit in federal court back in 2020.
@8:54 -- it was a running target . . . but If he killed him, then the officer would have been called a racist, natzi, etc. etc and probably end up losing his job and having his image tarnished forever. Have you been watching the news lately?
It’s obvious that the Monday morning quarterback couch potato trolls posting above have never chased, arrested, nor subdued an armed criminal, let alone been in the military.
Call me jaded, a cynic, or pedantic. But anything short of the police shootout from "Heat" isn't really a shootout.
@9:37 - the officer just tried to make contact and verify he was legally able to open carry and he RAN. Failure to identify and running from the police then changes it….
at 9:37 AM - When you act suspicious and run away from a LEO when approached. Then, of course there's the whole discharging of the weapon that sealed the deal.
1000% true
Love listening to the Dirty Harry and Rambo types. Never probably seen any true combat.
9:29 you have got to be one low down, sorry, evil, moral-less POS to poke any fun at somebody that’s working tirelessly against all odds to revive downtown. Screw you man.
