The Mississippi Museum of Art is going to manage Jackson's planetarium. The facility is closed as it undergoes extensive renovations.
* Jackson pays MMA $250,000 within sixty days to manage start-up costs. The city will thereafter pay a $130,000 annual management fee. The first payment is due before the end of the year.
* MMA equally splits any profit with Jackson.
* MMA hires and trains employees.
* Planetarium will open before the end of the year.
* The term of the lease is three years.
Kingfish note: Good move by the Horhn administration. The city is turning over planetarium operations to an organization with the expertise for running such facilities as well as promoting them. The people at MMA are a good group and will do right by the planetarium.

Kingfish, I may have the wrong building, but the Ms Museum of Art building on State Street, a few blocks south of Fortification, is boarded up.
split the profit?
You certainly do have the wrong building. That is the old Municipal Art Gallery. Obviously you have not been to the wonderful MS Museum of Art, right next to the Planetarium.
Excellent decision.
It may take a while for these little decisions to add up, but giving management to the Art Museum and trying to hold the parking meter company accountable are exactly why we elected Mayor Hohrn. Of course he still needs to get more of the big decisions right or corrected (crime prevention being the most notable), but after years of EVERY decision being self-serving and just wrong, this is refreshing.
I wish the Horhn admin would admit they can't run something with the Zoo and the water system like they did in this case with the Planetarium.
Thanks 2:36. You are correct.
That is the municipal gallery. I think it “closed” in the aftermath of the Greater Jackson Arts Council embezzlement. Wonder what ever happened with all that? It used to be a great gallery and wonderful organization… Perhaps downtown Jackson can breathe life into them both…
Can they save the libraries too?
The Zoo, Parking, Water System, Parks and Recreation, Street Cleaning, Pothole Fixing.....the list goes on and on of FUNDAMENTAL functions of government that Jackson can't accomplish. I think it's time for a new system of governance in this town.
Prioritise Animal Control. Doesn't need to be state-of-the-art; just staff the damn thing and find a non-crook to oversee it. It's one of those "overlooked" items don't rise to murder. THAT would gain attention.
$100 says the art from the municipal art gallery went to Chokwe’s house or was sold by the homeless now living in the building.
Same planetarium that Antard assured Jacksonians almost weekly would be opening within proverbial days.
Thank you Mayor Horhn!
Now, if the State would admit Wildlife is not capable of running our State Parks.
Theya aren't even trying.
The EBT community goes crazy if any effort or money is spent helping animals and since they are a sizable part of Jackson's population . . . that will never happen. Ask anyone who tried to get the city to pass a no-chain ordinance. Ask anyone who ever posted an animal needing help on NextDoor.
