Bigger Pie Forum: Too Big to Default?

The 2008 subprime crisis caused the U.S. to rescue financial institutions deemed too big to fail. The cost was socialized on taxpayers.  A lookalike crisis is brewing in Mississippi. Its cost may fall on Entergys residential customers.

The conventional explanation for the subprime crash is that home prices fell in 2006 and borrowers defaulted. Its wrong. Home prices rose in 2006 — but not as fast as they had been rising. Speculators who had borrowed to flip houses couldnt flip them in the softer market. They defaulted. The effect snowballed and triggered the crash a year later.

Michael Lewis told that story in The Big Short. Andrew Ross Sorkins sequel was Too Big to Fail. Mississippis story may be Too Big to Default.

A July 2 essay at Groundbreaker argues the AI data-center boom is a subprime lookalike. If it is, the Entergy-Amazon secret deal brokered by the Governor and the Mississippi Development Authority rests on a false premise: Amazon is too big to default.

Entergys uncontrolled expenses for Amazon may be socialized on residential customers. A study this spring found thats already happening. The average Entergy Mississippi household already pays about $10.60 a month for the Amazon build-out — roughly $38 million by March, on track for $74 million by year-end.

Data centers are financed with debt based on long-term contracts with AI customers. Amazons AWS has the most data centers. Its two biggest AI customers are Anthropic (maker of Claude), contracted to pay Amazon more than $100 billion, and OpenAI (maker of ChatGPT), contracted for $38 billion with $100 billion optional. Amazon is also Anthropics biggest investor. If Anthropic falters, Amazon takes a double hit. If Anthropic defaults, Amazons data-center value falls. And its ability to pay for electricity falls too.

OpenAI and Anthropic both lose money. OpenAI loses roughly $5 billion a year on $13 billion in revenue. Anthropic losses are similar.  Both stay in business by raising more money — the way home flippers did by refinancing before the 2007 reset. Thats getting harder for them to do. A year ago each new fundraising round was valued at roughly twice the last one. Now its closer to one-and-a-quarter times. The market is getting cautious.

The market still likes their high equity valuations. But those valuations are rising at a slower rate every quarter.  That’s a concern. Thats what triggered the subprime bubble burst.

In 2024, the Mississippi Legislature passed Senate Bill 2001 for Amazon. That law sidelined the Public Service Commission, waived the four-percent cap on residential rate increases, and granted automatic approvals for whatever Entergy spent — with a guaranteed return. It put Entergys other customers on the hook for spending Entergy said was for them.  Does Amazon have a take-or-pay obligation under Senate Bill 2001. If it doesnt or cant honor it, do Entergys residential customers pay more?  How much wiggle room does Amazon have?

The AI world has changed dramatically since Senate Bill 2001 passed in January, 2024.

A ChatGPT-level query paid twenty dollars per million words then. It pays seven cents now — a 280-fold drop. There were no serious Chinese frontier AI models then.  Today they do half the searches from the largest independent AI routing platform. They work cheap.  Their low prices depress data center prices and values.

When SB 2001 passed, CoreWeave was private little-known company.  Today it is a $42 billion AWS competitor. It offers contract features AWS doesn’t.  It just signed a $21 billion contract with Meta for data-center capacity through 2032 — a contract  Amazon would probably have won in 2024.

When SB 2001 passed, data center developers were buying and developing.  Now many are selling. The Wall Street Journal reported this week that they are lining up to sell tens of billions of their data center holdings. Smart money leaving the party while the music is still playing?

In 2024 it seems that Mississippis central planners planned for the future to be like 2024. Its not. AI technology has changed. The market has changed. Amazon has changed. Its free cash flow decreased 95% in the first quarter this year as capital spending hit $44 billion. Its borrowing like its AI customers. Borrowing is getting more expensive.

Goldman Sachs projects Amazon and its peers will issue more than $500 billion of new debt in 2026 to fund data-center buildouts. Their borrowing cost has increased. Oracle is one of Amazons data-center peers. Its debt default insurance has doubled to 2009 levels. Its investment-grade bonds trade like junk. Same thing happened before the subprime crash.

Its déjà vu all over again. In 2007 the cost of insuring subprime bonds tripled while housing prices were still setting records. Wall Streets largest bond investors bought protection against a collapse the equity market said couldnt happen. Rating agencies said the debt was AAA investment quality. But it turned to junk. Investors who read credit signals and sold early were Big Short winners. Late sellers were losers.

Too Big to Fail is a metaphor about ignoring or misjudging credit risks. In 2024, the Governor and the Legislature decided Amazon was too big to fail. They picked a winner, wrote a secret deal into statute, and waived PSC rules that could have limited residential customers’ exposure. Hindsight is 20-20. You cant think of everything. Central Planning Economic Developers didnt. They didnt have skin in the game either. They may have been blinded by jobs.

Im not predicting Amazons default. But its possible. Whats Plan B if it happens? Can the state clean up the mess that will be?  Can it do anything now?

One thing is don’t do another secret deal. There is a better way for Mississippi to play the data-center game and attract more investments. It does not involve central planners or secret deals. It does not saddle monopoly-utility customers with higher rates. It takes advantage of Mississippis competitive advantages — and lets the market work.

 Stay tuned.

MS RINOs at work behind the scenes.

These data centers are the next component in the Orwellian mass surveillance police state/ prison planet tyranny we live under. The taxpayer was always going to pay for it.

I'm afraid our redneck gullible politicians took the bait(palm grease) too quickly both at the state and municipal levels and it will be us residential customers who pay the price. Allowing Entergy to do this with no oversite, while also not allowing competition with Entergy is total fraud. If they back us into a corner, and make us pay elevated rates because of this, with no other company to jump to, you can bet holy hell is going to break loose.

Butch Lee is over here trying to turn Brandon into the next Silicon Valley while selling out the residents of Brandon. If this data center fails, causing a bunch of water/electric bill increases or other problems, this will be his legacy(not the neighborhood). Not the amphitheater, not the licker sales, not downtown, nothing. He will be remembered for shoving a data center down our throats and telling us to like it.

1:38 the fact that you use the term RINO tells me all I need to know about you. Don't be ignorant. It only makes sense for the details of these data centers, including electricity and water use and rates, to be thoroughly studied before they are allowed to be so quickly implemented. This is a get rich quick scheme for some. They can wait until things are done right.

China is going to win this one again. DeepSeek is 50% cheaper for 90% of the performance. China has invested heavily in energy infrastructure. They will beat everyone on price. Then ANT, Baidu, ByteDance, etc will scoop up the dying American IPs for pennies on the yuan renminbi. They will probably also gobble up Nvidia, Broadcom, and Micron at fire-sale prices when the bubble pops.

And don't forget that the US Taxpayer already "invested" nearly $ 1 Trillion for the CHIPS program to bring a TSMC foundry and also pay Intel to build a new US foundry.

This is all going to turn into an enormous taxpayer funded boondoggle right as the energy and food crisis really kick in thanks to the huge blundering in the Strait of Hormuz.

why is anyone of us having to pay ANYTHING for Amazon to have its data center? corporate welfare is still welfare.

I like the Bigger Pie Forum, but if they want folks to believe their points re: data centers, they need to have their facts straight re: the 2008 subprime crisis. For the ill-informed, a simple search would have factually provided:

“Owner-occupants made up the vast majority of subprime borrowers, so they accounted for the largest absolute number of defaults.” Yes, that is a quote.

In other words, Speculators who had borrowed to flip houses and couldn’t flip them in the softer market and defaulted, DID NOT trigger the crash, as Kelly Williams states herein.

Additionally for the ill-informed, the main reasons Owner-occupants (not Speculators) accounted for the largest absolute number of defaults were:
Loose lending standards before the crash.
Some lenders (approved borrowers with:
Little or no income verification.
Very low down payments.
High debt-to-income ratios.
Poor credit histories.
Many borrowers qualified only as long as home prices continued rising.

In other words, it was the criminal f’ing bankers that CREATED the subprime crises (not the house flippers, not the owner-occupants). And instead of being jailed for their crimes, they were bailed out by their criminal politician buddies. It was heads they “the no morals at all bankers” would have won, but tails, we the hard working taxpayer ending up losing.

Also, Andrew Ross Sorkin is a f’ing tool that, for Jamie Dimon, pushed PPP2 to be just like PPP1 (an even bigger scam than 2008). If Sorkin wasn’t such a little b*tch for the rich like Dimon, and had any business sense at all, he would have written Too Big to Fail BEFORE the crash, instead of afterwards. A monkey could see that it was coming (while CNBC’s Jim Cramer was recommending that folks buy Bear Stearns).

Hopefully Kelly Williams will be as wrong about the data centers as he is about “Speculators who had borrowed to flip houses couldn’t flip them in the softer market. They defaulted. The effect snowballed and triggered the crash a year later.”

My trolling hit home. Win!

The more people want and use AI, the more data centers will be needed. So, either stop using AI for everything or embrace the future people in America are creating.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
