Jackson's sales tax revenue remained the same as in 2025 even though it faces a $23 million budget shortfall. Check out how your city fared in collecting sales tax.*
The sales tax revenue posted below is posted on the Mississippi Department of Revenue's website. The revenue is reported from July 1 to May. The previous year's sales tax diversion for that same period is posted in parenthesis.
Jackson: $28.0 million ($28.0 million)
Ridgeland: $15.6 million ($16 million)
Flowood: $14.7 million ($14.4 million)
Pearl: $14.3 million ($13.7 million)
Madison: $10.2 million ($10.4 million)
Richland: $8 million ($8 million)
Brandon: $7.8 million ($8.3 million)
Clinton: $5.4 million ($5.5 million)
Canton: $3.4 million ($3.7 million)
Flora: $503,071 ($491,234)
Chunky: $6,642 ($7,477)
However, a dive into the weeds reveals Jackson's real problem.
Jackson: $28 million
Gulfport: $27.9 million
Hattiesburg: $26.1 million
Tupelo: $25 million
Even with population loss, Jackson is still three times the size of these cities yet they are virtually dead even in sales tax revenue. Such is the effect of running off businesses to the burbs. How is Puckett Machinery looking now, Harvey?

This is precisely why I laugh any time someone claims Jackson supports the 'burbs. Jackson has been so hollowed out that the 'burbs are supporting Jackson. Not that Jackson doesn't have a couple tent poles (the hospitals).
If you were the Mayor, wouldn't you be trying to create a City to attract investors/businesses to increase those revenues? Yet, it seems like at every turn Jackson does the opposite including the Horhn admin. But, but, but I thought he was going to be different....
Yeah but we still da capital city! And we got a zoo!
Anyone that thought Hohrn would have a different leadership philosphy than Chokwe is smoking crack.
Interesting info KF, but curious: what the hell relationship is there to Chunky? Why did you choose to include this little burb on the Newton/Lauderdale line in the comparison?
9:28 here. I did the math and all the 'burbs (Madison, Ridgeland, Flowood, Clinton, Pearl, Brandon, and Richland) total up to $76.1 Million. 2.7 times the amount of tax revenue combined.
Though I'm kind of confused as to why Byram isn't included, but that's only 3 million.
maybe Hohrn will pick up some sales tax tips at Harvard-
@9:44. Jackassery. Please catch up before commenting further.
Interesting considering that Jackson also has the extra 1% sales tax added to the 7% sales tax rate that everyone else has. Also, the lowered sales tax on groceries cannot be blamed, especially when Jacksonians complain of “food deserts” there.
@9:46 AM Have you been to Byram? It's basically south Jackson.
I’ve never heard of any good business experience from anyone in Jackson. It’s the city that just doesn’t care.
Cut zoo out of budget - sell animals - advertise zoo property as tax free for 10 years - put a data center on it - get federal and state help to acquire actual businesses on the land….
Start demolishing dilapidated buildings one by one ….
Help builders build new housing / apartments using new law passed by Congress
Lots of work to be done
No mystery here. The same factors that are driving out the tax base-crime, homeless people taking over, crappy schools and deteriorating infrastructure-are driving out retail.
You can’t tax your way to prosperity.
Interesting considering that Jackson also has the extra 1% sales tax added to the 7% sales tax rate ...
The 1% is reportedly separately. It is also declining and for the same reporting period KF notes above is -$800,000 versus 2025.
“Only the little people pay taxes.”
Byram is nothing like South Jackson lol. Demographics wise maybe but far safer
A large part of the population of Jackson participates in a culture that is inherently anti-business. If you want to be an elected leader of that population, you have to be anti-business as well.
Brandon showed a decline but it is not shown in red.
He’s chokwe revenge
Yes, I've been to Byram. And Clinton, and Flowood, and Richland, and all the other burbs surrounding Jackson. Byram is similar to all the others, basically adjoining Jackson.
"One of these things is not like the other" - that's Chunky, which is 90 miles to the east. Just wondering why that one selected instead of Hickory, or Paulding, or Mound Bayou. All while understanding Jackassery without a problem; just askiing how/why it drew the short straw.
Now refer to newest article above.
Can they charge sales tax on car shows? That would help!
"How's Puckett Machinery looking now, Harvey". There is one more very painful but real world example here: The mentality that has and is currently running Jackson has no concern about the reality of its decisions. Harvey can't even spell Puckett Machinery much less have had any concern over the matter. You see, the minority rule is about the rule, not the aftermath. This is nationwide. The mentality is we are going to drive the bus and we don't care where it ends up because we'll blame it on whitey. That's the short version of how they think.
