A detective submitted a screenshot of the surveillance video into the facial recognition software. The program recognized Smith from his days as a member of the Northwest Rankin High School football team.
Flowood police arrested Smith a few days later. A search of his phone revealed similar activity at Lakeshore Pointe Apartments. The police report states:
On 05-13-2025 Detective McBee reviewed the phone dump from Zyrek Smith cellphone. Detective McBee noticed two videos where a phone was placed under a door and two women were using the restroom in the first video. The second video they were adjusting their tops to their swimsuits and one was topless.
This appeared to be another case of voyeurism by the suspect Smith. There was a picture from the download of girls by a pool. This picture of the pool was sent to Investigator Cotton at Rankin SO. Investigator Cotton stated that was Lakeshore Pointe near spillway road.
Detectives Haddakin and McBee went to 111 Lakeshore Drive, Brandon MS 39047. Detective McBee spoke to the property manager , and showed pictures of the females. Mrs. xxx showed the picture to a maintenance employee as well, but neither recognized the females.
The bathroom and the fitness center matched the video. Detective McBee took pictures of the fitness room, and bathroom. Detective McBee took pictures from the fitness room to the pool area where the females were laying out.
Detective McBee then turned this part of the investigation over to Rankin County Sherriff Department as it was out of our jurisdiction. At this time there is no further information to report.
Police charged Smith with three counts of voyeurism. The Rankin County grand jury indicted Smith for two counts of video voyeurism - filming without permission and two counts of video voyeurism - attempted filming without permission.
Smith pleaded guilty to all charges in February. Rankin County Circuit Judge Brad Mills sentenced Smith to serve five years in prison but suspended three years of the sentence. Smith must register as a sex offender and is barred from unsupervised visitation with anyone under the age of 18.
Attorney Darla Palmer represented Smith.
