Jackson Parks & Recreation Director Abram Muhammad announced their deaths at Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba's press conference today. (4:30 in video posted below)
Mr. Muhammad said staff found their deceased bodies last Thursday in the attic "of the barn in which they were housed. The parrots had been removed from their exhibit due to the cold weather. The Director said a mink got inside the attic and "caused them to expire." The bodies of the parrot were still intact.
The slaughter of the Amazon parrots was reported to the USDA as required by law.
The USDA also dinged the zoo over perry dogs in its December inspection:
When discussing the mechanism of daily observation of the black-tailed prairie dog colony, the keeper indicated that she does not use a reporting mechanism to determine the length of time that may pass between observation of each of the animals and could not confirm visualization of the black-tailed prairie dogs the day of inspection. Although normal during certain times of year for black-tailed prairie dogs to remain underground for longer periods of time, daily observation of animals is important to ensure that conditions that can negatively affect behavior, health, and well-being are identified timely and that accurate information is conveyed to the attending veterinarian.
Mr. Muhammad said the perry dogs were underground due to the extreme cold weather. The temperature ranged from the low to high- 40's on December 3, 2024. Staff was later able to observe five perry dogs. A camera was installed that will be checked three times a day.

Prairie Dogs?
Don’t you mean prairie dogs not perry dogs?
so minks are thrill killers and kill for fun?..............sounds like alot of people who live in jackson.
Per the National Weather Service, on December 3, 2024 the high @ JAN was 52 and the low was 31. Neither temp reading was anywhere near extreme.
That’s amazing. I didn’t know we still had a zoo in Jackson. Don’t tell Lumumba. He’ll want to give the feed contract to Richards Feed Co.
Usually a little colder than that in their home range. You know, on the Northern Parrys!
Sounds like a fox to me
There has been lots of expiring in Jackson for some time now.
I don't believe this happened as it is being reported. Killed the Parrots and didn't eat them? No way. Of course, in Jackson truth doesn't exist.
If you had watched the video, you would not have axed this questions.
Unfortunately, that is the nature of our world, with every level of specie being divided into prey, or predator. Humans are considered the highest order of creation, yet, they haven't learned this simple lesson.
At least the death was caused by animals actually in the zoo vs the rabid dogs that have caused harm in there before. Progress I reckon.
So a low at night that is below the freezing point is not extreme to a creature whose normal habitat is tropical rainforest? Please, tell me more Mr. Ornithologist.
So the city leadership's plan for the zoo is apparently to let it die slowly (or quickly, if a parrot) rather than admit defeat and close it?
Enough is enough - can we pressure the USDA to shut the facility down since the foolish, incompetent Mayor will not?
Close the zoo and use the land for public housing.
The only chance of the Zoo survival was to move it by the natural science museum or even at the smith will stadium. That window has passed. The zoo is dead. The humane thing to do is to sell the animals to other zoos. No one is going to go down into the ghetto to visit. Truth hurts, I know. Why aren't all the animal rights society raising Hell about the zoo treatment of the animals? Guess to scared to cast aspersions on a black city. Right. (What the mayor says after ever sentence). This is not hate speech. If the mayor had done a good job, he who have been heaped with praises. Success is praised, BS walks!
Museum. Great location, bad site. Hilly. It floods and you better believe the USDA will look at the flooding before approving anything. It's only 25 acres while the current zoo is 33. That means you can never expand or have the better, free range exhibits now popular. Better site is over by where I-55 and I-220 meet, behind the railroad tracks. Right by County Line Road and Renaissance. Restaurants, shopping and the Prado hotel as well as Hilton. Much better site and great access.
Are they positive it was the minks? Maybe the locals thought that they were chickens.
prison
So ... tropical rainforest ... Please, tell me more Mr. Ornithologist.
"The black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) is a rodent of the family Sciuridae (the squirrels) found in the Great Plains of North America from about the United States–Canada border to the United States–Mexico border.[3] Unlike some other prairie dogs, these animals do not truly hibernate. The black-tailed prairie dog can be seen above ground in midwinter."
Access may be better but it is far from great.
Maybe if Richard's had an "Animal Sales and Relocation" biznass the mayor would have been more open to that more humane option.
Top Golf, The Prado and The Zoo at Tougaloo. Brilliant!
Nah, the Dinsmor crowd would complain.
"No one is going to go down into the ghetto to visit" the zoo?
See how many disc golfers visit daily to use the disc golf course across the very same driveway from the zoo admission gate!
It sounds like a weasel. A weasel will get in a chicken house, and kill every one of the chickens.
Great idea! Charge the disc golfers a usage fee or surcharge and apply to funds to zoo operations.
The Jack Zoo: where animals go to die. However, looks like weeds and mold are thriving. Our mayor is a mold farmer.
I thought you were commenting on the fact that the parrots were sheltered due to the cold and that is what led to their demise. Far be it from me to assume you'd be commenting on the primary focus of the article. That's what you get when you assume.
Where’s PETA ?
