Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey issued the following statement.
On Thursday, February 6, 2025, approximately 7:00pm a deputy with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department was traveling on eastbound I-20 near the 68 mile marker when he observed a tractor-trailer hauling multiple cars that was failing to maintain a single lane of travel.
After conducting a traffic stop on the commercial vehicle and speaking with the driver, the deputy became suspicious of possible criminal activity. During a consensual search of the vehicles loaded on the trailer, deputies noted anomalies in a silver BMW passenger car.
The tractor-trailer was escorted to a nearby sheriff’s department facility where further examination of the anomalies revealed that the vehicle had been loaded with approximately 42.4 lbs meth and 20 lbs fentanyl.
At the conclusion of the initial investigation, deputies believe that the driver nor the trucking company were aware of the illegal cargo concealed inside of the vehicle. The driver was released and has not been charged with any crime at this time; however, this is an ongoing investigation.

Grammar suggestion: "At the conclusion of the initial investigation, deputies believe that N-E-I-T-H-E-R the driver nor the trucking company were aware of the illegal cargo concealed inside of the vehicle."
Great work! That's enough fentanyl to kill every man, woman, and chihuahua in Mississippi.
I fail to see 'the Rankin Connection'.
What anomalies, specifically?
Um… I have questions… They released the driver? What?
10:49pm The French Connection (1971) starring Gene Hackman. A car was used for smuggling drugs.
“Failing to maintain a single lane of travel.”
This happens every business day on Bozeman Rd, except they’re coming at you head on. It’s a “can’t stop looking at their cell phones” mental disease epidemic.
42.4 lbs meth and 20 lbs fentanyl is a major bust; congrats to the Rankin County Sheriff’s Dept deputies on a job greatly done!!!
another 'magical' stop by rankin law enforcement - those guys must have x-ray vision
"Crystal Blue Persuasion ....."
The Belgian Malinois deserves some credit! Gorgeous dog.
How did law enforcement become suspicious of criminal activity from talking to the driver, but the driver is not suspected of anything? Somebody got a tip and doesn't want to rat out the rat.
Is the Sheriff’s office even allowed to patrol interstates in MS? Something is fishy here. Why would they announce this? If they don’t think the driver is involved, wouldn’t you try to see who picks up the vehicle with the drugs? Putting out a press release the same day kind of defeats the purpose. Based on his actions, you have to wonder if Sheriff Bailey has a deal with the cartel.
Is the driver hold up in a cell beat to a pulp. Someone needs to check on him
Glad it’s off streets….would rather have had them track it to eventual buyer though
Now Rankin Co SD will be sporting a silver BMW for undercover work or will they sell it.
There were two anomalies that caused a RCSO (not a city policeman or state trooper) to pull over an 18 wheeler for failure to maintain lane integrity. (1) The hood ornament on the BMW was missing and (2) the license plate on the tractor-trailer matched the one the informant in Texas gave them. License plate readers did the rest. Complete fabrication of probable cause for the stop with the weaving business, but very dangerous stuff, good job, that seizure may have directly saved a life.
The driver walked in exchange for the seized assets. And the photo does not depict all of the seized assets. Good work, R1 and S.O.
The driver must be an all around suspicious character if he could have no knowledge or awareness’s of a crime yet looks suspicious. One of those guys that doesn’t cheat yet has lipstick on his collar and his hair is ruffled.
The lethality of fentanyl depends on various factors, including purity, individual tolerance, and method of administration. However, a commonly cited lethal dose for an average adult is 2 milligrams (mg) of fentanyl.
Calculation:
1 pound = 453,592 mg
20 pounds = 9,071,840 mg
Lethal doses (assuming 2 mg per person):
9,071,840 mg ÷ 2 mg = 4,535,920 people
So, in theory, 20 pounds of fentanyl could contain enough to deliver a lethal dose to over 4.5 million people.
Someone above asked "What anomalies, specifically?"
Answer: they forgot to screw the emergency tow hook from the cars tool kit into one of the bumpers. Slight oversight cost them dearly.
It looks like we have numerous people who think they can figure it all out with a few crumbs of information, or maybe one very motivated know-it-all.
The French Connection is a great movie by William Friedkin. However, my personal favorite film of Friedkin’s is Sorcerer which is almost completely forgotten and overshadowed because it released at the same time as Star Wars
Civil forfeiture/ asset confiscation by LE in narcotics investigation has been of financial benefit to Rankin County Sherrif's Dept, so perhaps can legally share with Texas LE who provides tip, thereby ensuring future tips. As for driving over center line, many drivers get distracted when cops tail them for a while.
Trust me, Precious: any BMW old enough to have faded headlights, is not worth its upkeep. Frankly, those silly little things are trouble, by the time they need new tires.
May every bust like this be dedicated to Chris Picou. The only things he loved more than a big drug bust were his family and his dogs, in that order.
The officer asked the driver "Have you been picking your feet in Poughkeepsie?" That one question alone caused him to give up the goods.
seems they missed a perfect opportunity to deliver the car and get people who there to pick it up/take delivery.
Good job Sheriff’s Department. Lives saved
It's not a matter of tips, dumbo, DOT and Drug Enforcement are sophisticated enough to mount cameras along the interstate. I will say no more. I'll leave it to you to ponder.
Amen 12:08. Best there ever was.
