Punishing Excellence is the Mississippi Way

Perhaps the Mississippi High School Activities Association should pay attention to how they do things in Texas.   Exhibit 1: Texas high school sophomore Beth Leachman.   KSAT reported:

Boerne Champion sophomore Elizabeth Leachman took second place in the one-mile race at the Nike Outdoor Nationals on Saturday, in preparation for the U.S. Olympic Trials that are taking place this week.

Leachman ran a person-best 4:44.06 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Randolph High School junior Sophia Bendet also ran and placed third just behind Leachman, with a time of 4:44.16.

Leachman — whose best races are said to be longer races, such as the 3,200-meter and 5,000-meter — has set multiple previous records. She will be the lone high school student attempting to make the U.S. Olympic team.

Leachman will next compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 5000-meter run at approximately 8:22 p.m. central time on Friday, June 21.

If Leachman qualifies for the finals, she is expected to race just three days later, at approximately 9:09 p.m. central time on Monday, June 24.

Read that again.  A Texas high school sophomore placed second in a national track competition.  Surely she is not allowed to participate in Texas high school track meets as would be the case in Mississippi, right? Wrong.  Keep reading the article:

Last month, Leachman captured the gold medals in the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs at the UIL State Track & Field Meet in Austin, but that was hardly her biggest achievement at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Leachman was invited to compete in the women’s 5000-meter run against largely collegiate runners at the 96th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on March 28 — and won. She checked in with the top time of 15:25.27, nearly 35 full seconds ahead of West Texas A&M’s Florance Uwajeneza (16:00.14) and more than 39 seconds faster than Texas’ Eva Jess (16:04.83).

Her 15:25.27 outdoor time there set a new outdoor high school record. Article

The University Interscholastic League (UIL) is the Texas equivalent of MHSAA.  Leachman excelled in the high school championship meet as well.  Milesplit reported:

It was business as usual for Boerne Champion's Elizabeth Leachman in the UIL 5A Girls 3200m. She went to the front of the pack and extended her lead throughout. She has run as fast as 9:43.74 this year but went at a more conservative pace hitting the 1600m at 5:08 and then she ran 5:03 for her second mile to break the meet record with a time of 10:11.40.

The race for second place was much more compelling with Sara Morefield and Camryn Benson of Lucas Lovejoy setting the pace. The two stayed at the front of the trail pack and eventually with Sydni Wilkins of Frisco Liberty they broke away. The three were separated by a half second heading into the final lap. Morefield pulled away for second place in 10:35.64 while Benson took third in 10:38.74 and Wilkins had to settle for fourth place.

Leachman is attempting to win all three distance races today and this is her first time this year running all three races in the same day. Article

Keep in mind while Leachman is celebrated in Texas, Mississippi bars phenoms such as Tupelo's Andrew Brown from competing in high school sports.  His crime was to participate in the New Balance Indoor Track Championships in Philadelphia earlier this year.  MHSAA suspended him even though there is no indoor track season in Mississippi.

However, this is Mississippi where excellence is punished and incompetence is rewarded.  Earlier post. The retards at MHSAA should take note on how they do things in Texas.  One more example of why Mississippi is last and Texas is well, Texas.

MHSAA is nothing but consistent in their inability to make correct decisions.

Here's the epitome of it: Cory McGee, a Mississippi Olympian and holder of the national record, recalls that she learned, on the bus to the Olympic Village, that she was NOT voted Most Athletic in high school.

And who are most of the principals? The ex middling coaches who also run this high school association, reveling in fewtbawl, but ignoring world class athletes in track and field and swimming and other non-Bubba sports.

When you let Neanderthals run an organization, should you expect the wisdom of Churchill, or cave writings?

It’s fine for all the football players at the affluent suburban schools to go to camps and 7v7 tournaments all summer at Ole Miss and MSU though. No advantage gained there. Right?

The MHSAA is an association governed by members. Ultimately, if the superintendents of the state don’t chime in and demand that the board correct this, they are all complicit. Ask your local superintendent where they stand on this.

I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment about MHSAA, but the word retard isn't necessary there. Lets call them assholes and clowns like they are, but come on KF.

Does the private school association have the same restrictions?

Disabled persons don't deserve to be lumped in with the idiots who run the MHSAA.

Some 7v7 tournaments even turn into UFC Cage fights before it's over.

As I said on the first post about this, Andrew Brown should leave Mississippi as soon as possible and never return.

That there is training for when they go to collage and join a frat!

Andrew's crime was threatening the supremacy of the Pearl track team, which had an older runner is direct competition with him.

I think it's really just that simple.

Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Never truer than with this bunch of morons (unless it's the NCAA).

Mississippi should look at Texas schools as a whole. Texas has ISD's. Not the county setup that Good ole Mississippi has. Maybe if people would remember that school/college is an academic establishment and not a sport establishment, the scores would be better, but there is to many idiots on the school boards, robbing them blind, Simpson county is full of it.

I would agree with 9:41, except that my superintendent cannot spell "superintendent" and her school board makes her look like the winner of the National Spelling Bee.

I may be a bit confused, but how can a child travel to other states and play baseball, softball, and even volleyball on teams that are not sponsored by the state of MS and still be allowed to play for their local school, but they cannot not run track?

Anonymous said...

Everyone has to do their part to keep Mississippi last in all categories.

12:52 you are confused, only because you are blessed with common sense. It should be obvious to one and all that the MHSAA is made up of "people" who are not as blessed as you are.

In order to separate the fly shit from the pepper...

retard
1: a holding back or slowing down
2: a person affected with intellectual disability
3: a foolish or stupid person

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
