Dau Mabil's Brother Attacks Autopsy

The State Medical Examiner's Office determined Dau Mabil did not die of foul play.  However, Mabil's brother attacked the autopsy, alleging Dau's in-laws killed him.  The autopsy report is posted below.

Mabil disappeared on March 25 when he went for a walk in Belhaven. He was the subject of a massive search by law enforcement and numerous volunteers. The 34 year-old African immigrant was a favorite at Sal & Mookies where he was a manager. He was married to Karissa Bowley. Lawrence County deputies recovered Dau Mabil's body in the Pearl River on April 13. The body was transferred to the Capitol Police.

State Medical Examiners Dr. ARianne Robison and Dr. Paul Uribe conducted the autopsy.  The report states Mabil died of drowning:

The finding of ethanol in Mabil's body is expected as the human body produces ethanol as it decomposes.  Decomposition caused other changes in the body:

1) Confluent dark green-black discoloration over the scalp, face, trunk, and extremities

2) Skin slippage involving the surfaces of the scalp, trunk, and extremities

3) Black discoloration of the mucosal surfaces of the mouth

4) Degloving of bilateral hands and feet

6) Eversion of the lips and collapsed globes of the eyes

7) Slight distention (bloating) of the abdomen

8) Dilatation of the anus

9) Maggots in various stages of maturation in throughout the body

There was no trauma to the head nor any visible wounds.  There was nothing "remarkable" about the trachea or larynx.  There was nothing unusual about the heart.  The report stated Mabil had a "documented medical history of alcohol use disorder."

Dau's brother, Bul, will commission an independent autopsy after skirmishing with Dau's wife, Karissa Bowley, in Hinds County Chancery Court.  Earlier post.  She gave Bul permission to conduct the autopsy.

Bul Mabil attacked the autopsy on Facebook yesterday:

This was my brother Dau walking the museum trail in Jackson, Mississippi on March 25, 2024. He was walking like his usual self. However, he seems to have sensed a danger and that is why he is carrying a long stick. He never made it out of this trail. He was ambushed and killed. I don’t care how some racist people in Mississippi want to explain away my brother’s murder, but I am absolutely convinced that James E Bowley killed my brother with the help of his two sons. There are also other agents involved in my brother’s killing. These people are all on camera and they need to come forward with what they know. The Mississippi Capitol Police, the agency in charge of my brother’s death investigation do not want to expose to the public the lynching of my brother. If there is such thing as justice in Mississippi, the public needs to come out and call for the arrest of these people. The evidence are there in the law enforcement agencies’s hands but they are failing my family and I in holding the culprits accountable..I am fed up with the indifference that is being shown in my brother’s murder.

Kingfish note: Sadly, we have not heard the last of this case.

I left the area years ago but when I lived in Jackson there was a whole colony of homeless people living in the woods where that walking trail is now. At one point you could even see their tents from I-55. If they were still there I can see grabbing a stick while walking just in case one of them or a feral dog popped out of the woods.

Who exactly is "James E Bowley" and his two sons?

Anonymous said...

I understand it must be hard to accept what seems to be an accident, but he is probably setting himself up for a lawsuit with that accusation. Dau does not seem at all fearful or even particularly cautious while he carries his stick - could it have been intended for fishing? It's probably too long to be effective for self-defense.

Ok. Got the autopsy. Drowning, no visible evidence of foul play.

Whats the evidence that points to wife's father and brothers? Did I miss something? I've read everything that's been published.

Brother says, "There are also other agents involved in my brother’s killing. These people are all on camera and they need to come forward with what they know." Again, where's the tape? If people are on camera, turn over the tape. Blast it on your social media. This is the 3rd time we've heard about a tape yet nobody seems to produce it.

Brother says, "the lynching of my brother". If there was any trauma to the neck, it would show up in the autopsy.

"racist" and "lynching" are playing to Bennie.

There's going to be another autopsy. Brother is suppose to turn over name of person to wife because she had stipulations as far as qualifications. Wife and her attorney, in my opinion, need to keep that body in MS or she will never get him back. The person doing the 3rd autopsy could be legit and return body to wife OR he could be one of Bennie's "friends" who will "find" evidence that 2 other pathologists did not fine then the body will "be lost".

sounds like brother dau thinks the sudanese authorities ought to come over here and show us how ''justice'' should operate.

if brother dau thinks there is no justice here , he can always return to the sudan.

that's why he left sudan in the first place.......no justice.

The brother has said repeatedly that “we know what happened”. Well sir please enlighten us.

Anytime there is as interracial angle involved in a death there is an opportunity. An opportunity for those who make their livlihoods on the racism game. Had he died without the angle he would be just another dead black man in Jackson Miss and his family would be outa luck. But now they will keep the heat on. Fact.

James Bowley is a professor of religious studies at Millsaps. The idea that he would kill anyone is ludicrous. And his two sons weren't even in town when Dau went missing.

Just a normal dude said...

The stick is peculiar. Its too long and lean to be for keeping dogs at bay or for use as a walking stick/cane. However. it is a nice stick to use to check the depth of water if you plan to wade a river. I've waded hundreds, by the way. I believe that trail goes by the low-head dam by the Fewell Water Plant. I've waded the crest of more than a few low-head dams and weirs and the footing can be tricky and slippery. I did it as part of my job.

I can spread rumors as well as the next guy - maybe better, I heard he had planted corn down by the low head dam on the river and was going down there to water it, pretty much daily. I heard the area where he was going has questionable footing and was considered "easy to slip and go into the river".

I have not heard anyone sav if he could swim. I am suspicious he couldn't swim well enough to risk where he was. There was high water in that part of the river at times back when it happened, making it an even more risky place to be bank walking.

The distance his body traveled indicates to me that the water might have been deep with a decent current.

I hate to see anyone die. I hate to see an accidental death immediately become a racial accusation situation, which this death immediately became. Since it happened, I have heard someone put him into the trunk of a car and carried him to where they found him and all sorts of other stuff. I am tired of hearing about video showing stuff that never seems to make it onto UTube or the local TV stations.

What do I think? He went down to water his corn, slipped on a muddy bank, fell into the river and drowned., then floated to where they found him.

I had no idea the state crime lab wasn't trustworthy and their autopsy seems to indicate nothing unusual happened, other than a tragic drowning in a river where lots of folks have drowned.

The only thing racist about this death are the families involved and their attorneys

Knock it off y’all. This man is not sound, and we shouldn’t ridicule him. You may be there some day.

Anonymous said...

The brother sounds like he’s in denial and grasping at straws. This was clearly an accident. Give it up.

Anonymous said...

this took place in march. for those paying attention its cold in march. that waters is even colder. rivers are swollen from rain.

hypothermia can cause a blackout in 3-5 minutes .

but none of those undisputed facts mean anything to race hustlers.

Anonymous said...

It's time for local news media (and I use that term lightly) to stop being manipulated by both sides of this story. The players obviously enjoy the attention, no matter how ridiculous they come off.

Anonymous said...

Where is any evidence of foul play in this man's death? This despicable human is trying to prosper from his brother's death. The brother is void of any human decency.

Anonymous said...

Lawyers should be brought up before the bar ASAP. Unethical behavior & spreading incitement towards Karissa and others when autopsy is plain. Needs mental health counselor not attorney spreading false narrative.

Anonymous said...

It’s as though no accident can ever befall a black person. Every unexplained death of a black man is perpetrated by some conspiracy of whites because… well, because whites are just evil. Everybody know that; it’s all over the media. Just turn on your television and watch for yourself.

These are some pretty hefty accusations, and this side has continually refused to provide evidence of what they allege. They claim that there was this "smoking gun" video, yet Capitol Police has the video, and they havent showed it out there. This man, is out here accusing James Bowley, a Millsaps religious studies professor and his two sons without providing ANY EVIDENCE, and when asked for it, they continue to refuse to provide it. Either put up, or shut up. Also, if this continues to not be proven, likely defamation and sanctions against the parties who spread this nonsense and their lawyers who allowed it.

What We Need Is Perry Columbo said...

5:05 assures us that the learned professor could not be guilty: "James Bowley is a professor of religious studies at Millsaps. The idea that he would kill anyone is ludicrous." That conclusion is worthless.

Some of you are calling the brother unbalanced. I remember the video tape of the wife that was shown on this blog. Talk about unbalanced. if it's fair to refer to 'him' as unbalanced, who not reach that same conclusion with 'her'.

But the existence of two unbalanced people doesn't equal murder. Fruitcakes are expensive, but in this case, they're a dime a dozen.

Anonymous said...

12:18, who is 'they' and who are 'parties'?

Anonymous said...

I feel a massive defamation lawsuit incoming.

Hope the brother has a bunch of cheddar to back up his claims of murder.

Anonymous said...

What does being a 'religious studies professor' have to do with innocence or guilt. I'm not accusing the man of anything, but his occupation certainly does not automatically exonerate him.

And if you think the brother is off his rocker, based on a video, check out the video of the wife.

Anonymous said...

Which video, 9:17? There have been numerous videos of Karissa Bowley during this whole ordeal. While Dau was missing, she struck me as someone who was desperately concerned for the safety of her husband, and afterwards, inconsolably sad for his loss.

No need to be casually cruel to someone who's lost a loved one and is in mourning.

Anonymous said...

There is a video of Karissa putting her father on the trail while Dau was on the trail, which should have been shared on this blog for fairness. Also, there seem to be numerous videos that NBC reported that have now surfaced on social media. Those videos showed a pickup truck standing by the white gate. There are also unidentified people carrying something that looks like a body-sized object under a white sheet, and a man with a “stocking or mask pulled over his face” is seen walking back and forth, perhaps checking for cameras to facilitate moving the body, as NBC reported. Have the law enforcement investigated these suspicious activities that were taking place on the trail that day?

Anonymous said...

June 24, 2024 at 12:57 PM, you come here with empty hands, and gossip. Why didn't you bring the videos?

Anonymous said...

Yes, 12:57, I believe all of that was looked at by the various law enforcement agencies investigating Dau's disappearance, and found not to be credible.

Anonymous said...

If I'm not mistaken, a video of the wife talking about the disappearance was posted on this blog early on. I'm not accusing anybody of anything. But, if it's fair to paint the brother as unhinged, then goose-gander.

Anonymous said...

I believe any thought of a lawsuit against the brother and his attorney would produce the opposite results. It would bring out the evidence, which the Capitol Police seem to hide from the public. Proper interviewing of witnesses and family members should have been conducted to determine why Dau would have thrown himself in the river. Based on the videos I have seen on social media, there is sufficient evidence of foul pay.

Anonymous said...

3:02 - We've all seen videos that showed Karissa Bowley visibly distraught over her missing husband. But to describe that as "unhinged" is distinctly uncharitable to say the least.

Jesus, man - show a little compassion.

Anonymous said...

12:57pm

I want to see those videos.

I think it is absolutely bizarre that the statement from his wife when he went missing that was shared on Facebook was "We are big lovers of walking in Jackson, MS, home of the Pearl River."

No one in my whole life living in Jackson has ever said, when describing the city as Jackson, home of the Pearl River.

Anonymous said...

It's astonishing to me that Bul is behaving this way. He's known the Bowley family since he was an undergraduate at Millsaps in the early 2000s. And James Bowley was among those faculty and staff members at the college who went out of their way to provide support for the Lost Boys of the Sudan - opening their homes to them, providing meals, scholarship monies, social support.

And for those who don't know them, the Bowleys are essentially pacifists, peaceniks, modern day Flower Children, if you will. They're incapable of harming anyone.

Anonymous said...

Kingfish, why are you giving air to this guy’s baseless accusations?

For that matter, why is what looks like a relatively pedestrian drowning accident - which is all it ever looked like - getting so much attention in the press?

Anonymous said...

Unbelievable that so many are circling the wagons around the wife and the family of the hippy, peacenik, flower children professor.

So, it's fine to paint the brother as unhinged, crazy and ripe for a lawsuit while critiquing the behavior of the wife is uncharitable, cruel and bizarre.
Got it.

Nobody knew his whereabouts or fate when she initially described Jackson as 'home of the Pearl River', which, as it turned out, was the location of his ultimate demise.

Sloppy detective work.

June 24, 2024 at 3:16 PM, another one with empty hands, and gossip.

Kingfish said...

Didn't approve some comments that flat out said certain family members committed a specific crime. Not worth the slander suit. Didn' say I think......, just stated it as fact.

Anonymous said...

11:17 she mentioned the pearl river in that post because they were trying specifically to get volunteers for the search of the Pearl river, an effort she did not initiate but she was trying to collect resources for. All parties on both sides are understandably devastated.

We were back in Jackson, last week, and "drove" through Belhaven (if picking one's way across what's left of the streets' pavement, and trying to guess which detours would actually not result in more detours leading to even more detours, can be described as "driving": it was more like a LUNAR LANDING, than driving, IMHO). So, I've got to say, this story is 'The Most Jackson Thing I've Ever Seen'.

This evolving tale beautifully illustrates, what has become of Belhaven, what has become of Millsaps, and what has become of Jackson.

Despite being a salad-of-tragedies, it still could be written into a funny screenplay, along the lines of 'Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills'. There's not a single person in that movie, who isn't some kind of buffoon. 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' also comes to mind. Or, maybe one should approach this saga from the Surrealist/Absurdist/Idealist viewpoint in 'Train de Vie', in which everything miraculously turns out for the best, except the happy ending turns out to actually be just the hallucination of a doomed man (SPOILER: everybody dies).

I'd call the story, 'Low-head Dam'. It'd just write itself...

HALO, a national rescue team, had asked her for a quote regarding their upcoming search if the Pearl River.

Anonymous said...

2:43 - You're the first and only person to make such a statement. She mentioned the Pearl River out of the blue and her mention of it was questioned here and elsewhere as soon as his body was discovered 'in the Pearl'.

Anonymous said...

What an irony. I can see that most people commenting on this blog do not want the truth to be known. They are the ones who are void of any human decency. And a bunch of sociopaths trying to hide.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for watching the comments, Kingfish.

Just my 2 cents. If I had video evidence of a crime being committed, I would turn it over to the police first. It needs to be reviewed. If it is actual evidence, police then get the detectives on it. If, after being reviewed, it is not evidence in this case, then it needs to be dropped. A few posters keep bringing up videos, yet I have seen no videos. Evidence should be considered then a conclusion needs to be made. I'm sorry all relatives lost a loved one.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required.
