Chaney Fires Back at Tate

Insurance Commish Michael Chaney issued the following statement.

I am certainly disappointed in the Governor’s veto message for SB 2224 and SB 2622. Both of these bills are consumer-friendly bills that would benefit healthcare providers and consumers in our state. The Governor is sadly mistaken that SB 2224 would have affected Medicare and Medicaid plans as the Department of Insurance does not have jurisdiction over these plans and the bill did not expand that jurisdiction. Senate Bill 2224 would give the Department of Insurance the important tools necessary to ensure that Mississippians would continue to have access to quality healthcare at reasonable rates. As your Commissioner of Insurance, I have endeavored to protect the consumers in our state and, as long as I am your insurance commissioner, I will continue to protect consumers and healthcare providers and provide a level playing field for all insurance carriers in this state

I’ll go with Tate on this one.

I think Commissioner Chaney does a good job. I am surprised he would want to have regulatory authority to set rates, if I understood the Governor's statement on one bill. There are some very strict regulations already in place for some insurance segments. Again, if I understood correctly, this eliminates market forces. BTW, I do not work for an insurance company.

Such assurances ring a little hollow after the UMMC-BCBS debacle...

I have known Mike Chaney for many years and implicitly trust his judgement. I go with Chaney on this one.

If I ever wanted to buy a used car that had never been wrecked or rode hard and put up wet then for sure I'd expect the salesman to be just like Tate Reeves!

I agree with 1:29.

I've know Mike for years too. I like him a lot.
I know Tate a little and I don't care for him.

But I prefer to take policy on face value and leave personality out.
So count me in Tater's camp on this.

Mississippi Today did a good piece on the pile of cash bcbsms is sitting on. It seems these companies force regulation on themselves through their own greed.

While I may trust Chaney, he won't be the Commissioner of Insurance forever. I fear too much power in one person's hands. Who knows, the next commissioner might be susceptible to payoffs, etc. (they are politicians, after all)

Tater-Tot is an air head.

I have no doubt that Mike Chaney is looking out for the insurance consumers of Mississippi!

Yeah, Chaney knocked the ball out of the park defusing the UMC BCBS imbroglio in record time and with little disruption.

I am in the insurance industry and like Chaney as a person, Fire Marshall, and overseer of personal lines insurance. As far as BCBS, he needs to nut up and tell them to pay for what they should or reduce their premiums. We have some of the highest health insurance premiums in the US, however, BCBS pays less here than anywhere. They are making hand over fist off of us and Chaney doesn't hold their feet to the fire. BCBS wags the dog and Chaney says yessir.

@1:29 PM - Mike, thanks for checking in.

@2:39 - good to see you Tater. Why do you hate Mississippians so much?

Anonymous said...

To many comments on here are short sighted. Just because you know and trust Chaney today doesn’t mean much. Who will be in that position next. Refer to Jackson mayor for appropriate level of fear.

Will side with Tate on this one. Chaney should had done more during the whole BCBS UMC debacle.

Anonymous said...

Maybe when Tate runs again, he will get the majority of the votes from his own town. Which I think he did not the last time. Please correct me if I am incorrect.

I vote for Tater over Blue Chaney Blue Shield.

Too much in campaign contributions from BCBS and other big insurance companies for Tate to let this legislation pass. He's bought and paid for.

We might have just had a Gut Check on Politics, Business is Business. Actions have consequences- I'm with Tate.

@1:29pm and @1:38pm You guys are why Mississippi is Mississippi at the bottom of everything. You side with a person (good ole' boy/girl) over sound policy. Inbreds in the 'Sip.

There are usually three sides to every story. In this case, Tate's, Mike's, and the truth. I'm 110% certain that each has the best interests of at least one Mississippian firmly in mind. Not the same ones of course but that is probably a minor detail that doesn't involve us common folk anyway. On the other hand, threads like this, here and otherwise, are often like watching people in the midst of being held up arguing with each other about who is handing over their wallets faster and more stylishly.

Chaney always wanted to be governor. The insurance commish gig went to his head years ago.

UMMC bended the knee folks, deal with it. Chaney had zero influence over the Blues.

I agree with the poster that said Chaney would be gone one day and you never know who takes that spot. It could have easily been John Mosely who we all know was running for the best interest of his body shop and price fixing and that's it. The next person may not give a care for health insurance. It's an electable position so there's not industry experience required.

Insurance-related issues, and especially those related to health insurance, have a long history of being fundamentally misunderstood by whoever is sitting in the Governor's Mansion. It goes all the way back to when the Affordable Care Act passed, which I doubt Governor Bryant knew was the actual name of "Obamacare." It was either the we (the State) gets to run our own insurance marketplace and take advantage of hundreds of millions in tax credits, or the Feds step in to run it and the State gets no tax credits. Bryant was too busy saying "I oppose Obamacare" to see that it didn't really matter because it was happening one way or another. Chaney knew this and tried to do what was best for the State by convincing Bryant to go with the State-run option, but Bryant held fast on pandering to the uneducated conservatives and we lost out on literal truck loads of credits.

But what does Chaney know, he's only been the Commissioner of Insurance for the past 15 years...

Mr. Chaney you are insurance company friendly. That is not the same as being patient friendly or even doctor friendly, though I'd argue your PRIMARY job is to see the those insured get the services needed at a fair price!

The comments on this are why the state is in the shape it is. I will side with so and so because I know him or this or that. Why not look up or try to figure out exactly what the legislation does? It passed the senate 52-0 and the house something like 100-5. It was good legislation with no business being vetoed.

Anonymous said...

I get tired of all the jabbering about being 50th in everything. Get Louisiana and Arkansas to annex the Delta and Mississippi will be 22 to 26 in every category. Thrown in Jackson and Mississippi might crack the Top 15.

Anonymous said...

"It passed the senate 52-0 and the house something like 100-5."

The question now becomes does anyone have the guts to override the veto.

Anonymous said...

I trust Chaney on this.

"It passed the senate 52-0 and the house something like 100-5."

Five out of 157 voting? Sounds like this could squeak through the over-ride process to me. If 97% of those voting favored the bill, let's have an over-ride.

There is no free market in Ms. health insurance. Blue Cross Blue "Shilled" is a monopoly with well over 90% of the market. Chaney is trying to give consumers a choice. Go Mike!

@12:59 you are right. Mississippi is at the bottom of many lists because of our citizens, not because of our government.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
