Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens issued the following statement.
Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, announces that Jakia Thomas was sentenced today to thirty (30) years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections for the murder of Demarcus Harris. Thomas was found guilty of Second-Degree Murder following a weeklong jury trial in Hinds County Circuit Court last month.
Thomas initially told police that Harris, with whom she was romantically involved, accidently shot himself while cleaning his gun; however, detectives with the Jackson Police Department quickly found that Thomas’ story was not supported by physical evidence. The evidence presented at trial, showed the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute and the jury ultimately found Thomas guilty of Second-Degree Murder.
“The Hinds County District Attorney’s Office has made the prosecution of violent felonies a top priority,” District Attorney Owens said following the sentencing hearing. “This successful prosecution, and today’s sentence is another example of that continued commitment.”
If you or a loved one have been the victim of domestic violence, you can call the Domestic Violence Hotline at (800) 799-7233, text START to 88788, or contact Hinds County District Attorney’s Office for assistance and resources.

Bwa ha ha. Except when the defendant is eligible for a ble$$ing.
D.A. Owens is doing a good job. I'll vote for him again. For the knuckleheads here: juries decide guilt or innocence in jury trials, and judges have a lot of sentencing discretion because our Republican legislature will not amend existing laws to limit judges' discretion or to increase length of sentences. If you have a gripe about it, contact your state legislator.
Who was the judge and why wasn't she blessed?
Height = 500 ??!
Did she cheap out on her lawyer? She couldn't testify that "he abused me for years, I just snapped one day" temporary insanity?
Dead men can't defend themselves.

“Blessings” are given by judges not prosecutors
Most amazing part of this story is that Jackson police detectives were able to "quickly" solve something.
Five feet, 180, would not hit.
Made ‘er mad, didn’t he?
