Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones is holding a press conference now on the murder that took place at the Raymond Detention Center last week. The presser is live-streamed below, courtesy of WLBT.
* Sheriff Jones said "we can't ignore the fact we need resources from all branches of government" to fix staffing shortages and a criminal justice system that takes its sweet time moving criminals through the criminal justice system.
* Pre-trial detainees are not being moved quickly through the criminal justice system. The Sheriff said pre-trial detainment is not meant to last for years.
* The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the homicide.
* A Federal Receiver oversees the Raymond Detention Center. Sheriff Jones said there has been little progress made with the Receiver.
* The Sheriff confirmed the validity of the video circulating online.
* There are between 930 and 950 pre-trial detainees in the Hinds County detention centers and at the Tallhatchie Detention Center.
* The jail population has sharply increased due to pre-trial detainment.

Hasn't the Mississippi defense bar ever heard of a Writ of Habeas Corpus? There should be 100s of them filed. What a backwater state.
I agree you can't hold people in Jail without a trail. There have been cases where people have been let out because it took forever to get to trial. The Judicial system in Hinds county needs to be blown up. The judges are bunch idiots.
What qualified attorney would want to be a public defender in Hinds County, let alone anywhere in Mississippi?
As an otherwise physically fit and imposing dude, Jones' public image is diminished by the goat crotch hanging unkempt from his chin.

But there is no gang problem is Jackson/Hinds county…or so we’ve been told.
As a former Deputy at that jail I am livid. This Sheriff is not informed, this is not about overcrowding, it’s not about pay, it’s about human decency, it’s about the quality of Deputies on your staff.
Sheriff Jones quit blowing smoke in our faces all you have is excuses and blame!
The only thing the Sheriff could have said, is that he is clueless on whats going on at the jail and my condolences to the family.
The media asking questions are clueless and seemed scripted!
93 inmates in the POD(housing area) how many deputies on that night?
If visitations are video conferencing, who’s bringing in the contraband?
Same fucking answer, we will look into it! Sheriff go on home and we will just pay you that $130,000 for the remainder of your term. Just go away!

We will put down or cell, we will open our eyes, we will do hourly cell checks, we will ensure our inmates are safe. We will get our ears cleaned by medical personnel so we can hear the inmates crying for help!
My Brother rest in peace! You were innocent until proven guilty by a court of law. The Hinds County Sheriff Department failed to protect you of a basic human right.

I've heard that it's pretty much a free for all down the the Hinds County jail these days. Far too few staff members for the number of inmates.
Im hearing the jailers are afraid to go in the housing area and the Sheriff won’t go back there unless he has an escort. I hope thats not accurate.
The inmates are running the prison....
Sheriff can you please address the cell phone issue. If you have video visitation the only way the inmates can get cell phone in is by the jailers cause no outsiders have contact with the inmates.
Also, you did a good job of addressing the incident which no one in their right mind would believe. We are not STUPID!
I've been told by several people that work at RDC that the receiver is there MAYBE a day or two a week. Otherwise he is no where to be found and seems to just be getting a pay check and leaving Simon running stuff. Considering Simon's known drug dealing past it has always been amazing to me that he has been left in the position he is in. Even having been reported doing shady stuff as the former jail admin he never got removed from the position because they couldn't get anyone to replace him. When you leave rotten apples in the barrel only good things happen right?
Why hasn't Tyree addressed the receiver not being there everyday? Why hasn't he brought that to judicial attention or attempted to do something about it? Has he washed his hands of the place since someone else is supposed to be running it and he doesn't get that part of the budget anymore?
