Will the Jackson State University get a new stadium? State Representative Robert Johnson (D- Springridge Road) wants the state to pick up the tab for some new digs.
Posted below is the text of HB #117.
SECTION 1. The following sum, or so much of it as may be necessary, is appropriated out of any money in the State General Fund not otherwise appropriated, to the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning for the purpose of providing funding to Jackson State University to assist in paying costs associated with the construction of an athletic stadium to host the university's sporting events for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2026, and ending June 30, 2027...............................................$40,000,000.00. SECTION 2. The money appropriated by this act shall be paid by the State Treasurer out of any money in the State General Fund not otherwise appropriated, upon warrants issued by the State Fiscal Officer; and the State Fiscal Officer shall issue his or her warrants upon requisitions signed by the proper person, officer or officers in the manner provided by law.
The bill is assigned to the House Appropriations Committee and House Appropriations E Committee. History and text of bill.
Kingfish note: Good luck with that. The Lieutenant Governor prefers a downtown site as do others.

No. Next subject.
22,000 seat stadium on campus and that frees up the area that UMMC wants and Fondren area aren’t thrilled with the stadium location anyway. Need a new stadium near the jsu campus and that is good for ummc and the area around it
Some colleges get a volleyball stadium...
It's a joke. 40 million will not buy a parking lot today. This nut has been asking for 40 million for the past 10 years while construction costs have multiplied astronomically. To build a decent stadium would take at least 200 million and JSU can barely afford to keep it's doors open now. It's silly pandering. They call this jive talking.
Assuming funding could be obtained, what are the legitimate sites where a stadium could be built?
At one point in time, it made good sense to find a way to vacate Memorial Stadium for UMC to have room to grow, but now I just don't think it makes sense.
The most recent college football stadium construction was at
San Diego State in 2022. Their 35,000 seat stadium cost 310 million. This is 2026. JSU already has a 60,000 seat stadium and no money but somebody wants to build them a stadium with 40 million? Do they teach math at JSU?
Mary, Mother of Jesus!! How many presidents has this school had in the past 12 years? Can you imagine the fraud and theft that would originate from something like this?
how about remedial reading, American History and math classes instead-
Jackson State losing enrollment by the truckload has a lot more concerns to be addressed than building a damn football stadium when they already have one. The IHL is doing everything they can to erase JSU's footprint and a half-ass stadium away from State Street will fit perfectly. It's crazy.
I have a way to solve this. Can their fans and school put up 25% of a real, current & accurate cost estimate for a new stadium? $30mil won't touch one.
I wouldn't put anything around South Jackson. JSU needs to put a fortress around the campus to keep the students safe as it stands now.
@1:16pm ditto. UMMC is going to demolish the Vet at some point for a cancer center (they have raised around half) and JSU needs a small stadium closer to campus. Could literally be metal bleachers that hold 25k and it would be more than enough. Would be better for Fondren too.
@1:37
UMMC is wanting this land and it makes great sense
To 1:16 and 2:15 - maybe you ought to actually check for reality before you just repeat what you have heard, or been told by somebody who heard, things of significance.
UMMC has no need for the land where the stadium sits for their proposed Cancer Center. The green space, where the JSU folks tailgate is adequate and ALL that UMMC wants or needs for their proposed facility.
Yes, there are several folks who are promoting a new stadium for JSU that use this argument as supporting reason and justification for this excessive expenditure, but its nothing but fodder, not substance.
KF I have now totally lost faith in those folks who spend time commenting on your site; I know it gives you great happiness (and helps fill your pocketbook) to have people who know little and read less, but hell - encourage them to at least read your post before they turn loose their fingers.
The $40 million in this bill does not represent the Cost of a new stadium, its what the sponsor wants the state to spend now while the rest of the money, approximately $200 million by my reading, is raised. Granted, that's not the way it is normally done, but this is the leader of Mississippi's House Democratic caucus, so they think their entitlement to getting the government money first is the process; not putting together a school/alumni base of dollars and then bringing the request to the state.
But I digress, I was ranting about your readers/commentors, three or four above, and their understanding that this $40 million will bild a new stadium
2:15 The Ole Miss and MSU crowd would just as soon move JSU to Hughes Field or some high school stadium before building JSU a stadium of at least 40,000 capacity fully warranted by JSU traditionally having the highest attendance in FCS football and higher than USM (but USM has 33,000+ seats). Expect nothing but 3rd class treatment from the state of Mississippi. Renovate Memorial stadium with a fraction of the money and stay put!
I wish JSU would get a new stadium so they would STFU about it, and tear down veterans memorial stadium to make more parking for UMC employees.
Let them play on the football field behind Murrah high school. If they fill it up for every home game, then maybe look at the feasibility of building a new stadium. Of course this will never happen because it actually makes sense.
The city has acres and acres of abandoned property blight that can be demolished and turned into a new stadium and parking for JSU. Just don’t let CoJ or JSU manage the project or it will become a corrupt shitshow and national embarrassment.
If UMMC wants the land then they should fund the new stadium for JSU. There are also many significant successful JSU alums that could help with the fundraising effort.
And learning that carjacking, armed robbery, and drug dealing is bad, while learning reading, writing, and arithmetic is good.
FYI yall, the bill Haley Barbour signed that transferred the Vet from the Dept of Finance & Administration to JSU also specifically mandated that the property will go to UMMC as soon as JSU is playing in a different stadium.
UMMC wants to be the hell out of Jackson. And next five chancellors at the University of Mississippi will try to figure out a way to make it happen.
The last thing any hospital really wants is to expand in Jackson. And our bone-head legislature is the impediment.
I don’t get what the problem is. JSU deserves their own stadium. UMMC needs the space.
For a hospital that doesn't want to expand in Jackson they certainly have engaged and are continuing to engage in an awful lot of expanding in Jackson over the past decade plus.
I now live in Houston TX. In 2017 the Katy High School cost $70.0M
2:42 The only money available for a stadium will be the 40 million. There is NO money being raised by JSU and it would make no damn sense for this cash strapped school to raise more than it has in it's history to fund construction of a football stadium when a facility more than adequate for it's need is already being used. Ask the UMMC flunkies proposing this bill what fundraising efforts are instituted to raise the construction costs. After years of proposing this legislation it would seen that something would be in place. Nothing. Smoke and mirrors. JSU should spend the money on building a first class institution instead.
