Closed!

Flowood's only movie theatre closed tonight. The parking lot was completely empty just before 10 PM and there was a note on the box office thanking everyone for their support.  It was probably only a matter of time before it closed thanks to Covid and five other movie theaters in the metro area.  Saw many a movie there over the years. Thanks for the good times.

I guess Rednecks don’t like going to the picture show any more

There ya go...Blame it on Covid. As if Covid had no effect on the other area theaters.

I don't know what the real reason was...maybe partly because the place is in the middle of the highest traffic intersection in the state? Maybe because the floors were sticky? Or management. Or because it's not close to any residential areas. Or nowhere nearby to eat after the movie. Maybe it was the popcorn, or the bathrooms. But it damned sure was not Covid.

'I guess Rednecks don’t like going to the picture show any more'

Not everyone has your taste in entertainment and can afford a PlayStation and the Playboy channel.

It's a failing business model. One dinner and a movie night for a family of four costs about as much for a month of wi-fi, Netflix and Prime Video.

That place was open??

@11:43 does Jackson have any besides Capri?

So Mayor Lumumba has announced that he has gotten the city nearly $1 billion to repair the water system that was neglected by the state leadership due to racism. You ignore that and instead report that the hillbillies lost a movie theater. Something that is common nationwide! I see that you aren’t even trying to hide your racism any longer!

Good!
They showed too many libtard movies
Glad they are all closed down
Just like the USA ….needs to close

And now there is a CBD store across the street. That area isn't very safe.

Anonymous said...

"Or nowhere nearby to eat after the movie."

It's Rankin County; there's an unlimited amount of chain restaurants within a 2 mile radius.

It was too close to Pearl and Madison. Viewers had a choice, and the management made everyone chose Pearl or Madison. That place was never clean and was not updated like the others. Simple business 101....they lost to the competition in a shrinking market. Covid just exposed the poor business practices as it has done with so many others.

Moving Pictures (TV and Cinema) killed the old time radio show. Now people are back in their homes listening to podcasts and streaming shows. The tables have turned!

@ 3:40 AM

Not one of your reasons is accurate. I've never had a bad experience there, and it's always been clean. It's also located less than a mile from residential and Dogwood shopping areas, with two restaurants in the same commercial complex. Maybe you shouldn't be up so late...

Why do we keep electing idiots to Congress that can't get anything done. They can't even elect a speaker. But somehow, some of those idiots think they are being productive by doing nothing but preening for TV cameras.

CBD stores are unsafe? Who knew?

Anonymous said...

I lived nearby and I wouldn't go there. It was nasty. When I go to the movies, I have to drive by it to get to another theater and would gladly do so.

Anonymous said...

I've passed by that location often but never thought of it as my first choice to see a movie. Way better options in Pearl and Madison County (and my home).

Anonymous said...

If only they had played Deliverance more often.

Um, Mugshots is in the same parking lot. Dogwood restaurants are what, a mile away? I realize folks like you take public transportation so trying to get a ride to Dogwood from the theatre might be troublesome but for those of us who don't consider a two minute drive an inconvenience, there are some decent restaurants there such as Table 100, the two Ichibans, America's, several Mexican restaurants, and others.

As for the theatre itself. Thank goodness for Tinseltown. Flowood and Northpark (UA) were last ones to go to big screens and stadium seating . Only because competition forced them to do it. Last movie I saw there was Dunkirk. They also don't carry the special events the other theaters present.

I suspect the same thing that happened to Clinton UA - people turned it into a baby sitter by dropping their kids off there for ours and the little hellions ran like wild dogs. Good riddance.

Anonymous said...

I live in Clinton. And yes, we are much better off without that theatre.

Anonymous said...

I like how it still said "United Artists" on the side. It was an ok theater, like Clinton, but never the best. All the UA theaters were slow to upgrade.

Theatres, restaurants... anything of that sort that goes out of business only does so for one reason. They suck. If they had a product or service that people wanted or needed or even just liked do you think they would close?

Saw a lot of great movies in that place. Hate it's closing.

Took my grandchildren to see their first movies there. We also saw Puss n Boots there last week. So sad to see it go.

All of the LAUGHTER that you hear, outside of Jackson from over here in Rankin County . . . I assure you, we are not laughing WITH you.

City of Jackson, someone says? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Damn, 340 .

Covid talk really gets your panties in a bunch.

@9:29 - Didn't that Mugshots just close? As to the high dollar eateries out at Dogpatch, unless one can negotiate that hellatious traffic and fork over $140 for a couple, who the hell is going way out there to grab a quick, after-show bite to eat. Oh, you left out Half-Shell.

Not sure why you defend the place, then wind up giving multiple reason for its closure. It was an outdated dump.

Anonymous said...

@ 8:25 - How is that you know it's 'clean' since, when you're there, it's pitch black dark and you can't see the roaches. The place was terribly outdated and should have been dozed ten years ago. Which is it...Dogwood is one mile or two miles or three miles away?

It's a terribly-congested high-traffic area, unlike the theater in Madison or Pearl. Imagine dropping the kids off there and getting back home 50 minutes later. Put the 8-mm porn projector away.

The entire catalogue of United Artists was bought by the current owners of the “This!” Television network.
That includes Stargate SG-1 which is the only reason I ever tuned in. But my last HDTV broke in 2018 and I chose to never buy another. I have an 8K ultra wide OLED pc monitor that I use to watch the limited amount of content that I enjoy.

The mugshots on lake harbor closed and a bulldog burger went there over a year ago.

@3:40, the floors were “sticky” in the old Capri back in the 80’s and 90’s but that’s a different kinda “sticky” but yep you’re right. Nobody wants to go there anymore. Why when you can stay at home?

OK. You people have posted over and over about what a nice place it was, how close it is to local food, what a grand lineup they present, how fine the area is, how clean it's been for your lifetime and how close it is to Flowood's crowded eateries.

Now, for the love of God...tell us why it closed down!

PS: Covid ain't got shit to do with it.

Can't believe the one across from J.C.Penny at Northpark Mall has not shuttered. Given the nature of the traveling demographic and its proximity to Jackson (pardon the redundancy), it's amazing the place is still a thing.

Speaking of J.C.Penny, that store in every location is a virtual tomb today. Used to be you would see a hundred shoppers there any day of any week and twice that many during seasonal rush. Now you see two 'checkout' registers open and maybe five employees in the entire mausoleum. This chain won't last much longer.

Don’t overthink things. Regal Cinemas filed bankruptcy in 2021. There were only two Regal cinemas in the state, Flowood and Brookhaven. I imagine they were well behind on their lease payments resulting in less funds for maintenance of the facility by the owner. Covid just hastened the end of a dying business model for a traditional screen and concession theater.

So, to recap: The place was an outdated dump, the floors were sticky, the popcorn was stale, it was in the middle of a very high-traffic intersection, movies were pro-woke, parents did not want to drop their kids off there, the only places to eat post-show were 3 miles away after negotiating maddening traffic and paying high prices and the Jackson yoot-regulars preferred the place.

On a more positive note, it closed due to Covid.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
