Sloppy, Just Plain Sloppy, WJTV.

WJTV finally reported a Hinds County grand jury indicted Beth Ann White:

Questions about why it took so long to indict White filled the pages of social media after WJTV "reported" the story.  Well, it didn't take long to indict White as the grand jury indicted her in March 2022.  WJTV was just plain sloppy and that, my friends, is the bottom line.

WJTV is an embarassment to the industry.

Has WJTV aired a correction yet?

All of the local outlets are pathetic, but they may be the worst.

Anonymous said...

Who even works there now? Anybody know?

"Kaitlin is the Digital Executive Producer for WJTV 12 News. She started working at WJTV in 2013 as a producer before becoming executive producer of the morning show."

In other words, she's been there long enough to learn the four Ws and an H of reporting (who, what, where, when, why, and how).

Anonymous said...

Make that five Ws. My bad.

Anonymous said...

I stopped watching them years ago.

There's just nothing to watch on WJTV News - it covers all the standard, pre-annoumced press conferences & reads prepared statements from politicians & companies that we can get anywhere. That's it.

When I moved away I found other CBS affiliate's across the country are miles better than WJTV.

WJTV is bad, but WLBT and WAPT aren’t any better. All local news stations routinely misspell words, use bad grammar, have clueless reporters and do little or nothing to bring local news to us. Instead, they all show national news stories which can be seen again at 5:30 PM.

The qualifications of an investigative reporter in Jackson are having the ability to steal leads on this blog.

Anonymous said...

Like many of the residents of NE Jackson, the decent reporters have left town.

Anonymous said...

WLBT actually blocked me on Twitter several years ago after I pointed out their infantile writing skills and lack of investigative enthusiasm.

Anonymous said...

WJTV news is still a thing?

Howard Ballou and Scott Simmons are the only ones worth watching.

Anonymous said...

All of the stations focus too much on national news instead of state and local news. Nothing but repeat news. Why do they have news at 4 in the afternoon.
The weather reports are too long and detailed. They need to just get to the point!

Anonymous said...

@7:30 PM The long winded weather reports are fillers due to the lack of real local reporting. They do get into the weeds too much with their weather reports.

Anonymous said...

Scott Simmons is worth watching? Wow, talk about setting the bar low.

Anonymous said...

WAPT News Team is the best!
Keegan Foxx, Troy Johnson, Megan West are great at communicating the news.
We get enough news in our life.
What we really need is direction.

Anonymous said...

9:53, There are plenty of newsy entertainers willing to give very specific directions on just about every facet of life. Unfortunately, it's usually in the wrong direction.

Anonymous said...

What fun it used to be when the local affiliates had comment sections. I could troll for hours. They didn't keep those comment sections around very long for some reason. They all just kind of disappeared at about the same time.

Scott Simmons always appears angry and about to blow a neck vein. Fifty bucks to the first one of you who can show me a picture of that clown smiling.

Howard Ballou is a stuffy anachronism straight out of the sixties. And his sidekick, Magnolia...Lord help us. I guess this duo is sort of like the old soap operas that our mothers and aunts use to watch - Old people just can't do without their daily dose.

Top headlines tonight. . .
yet another murder, this time . . .
another child was shot by a stray bullet fired from a car . . .
the Jackson City Council and Mayor appear at odds again . . .
boil water notices are in effect for . . .
problems persist at the O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant . . .
Jackson's Mayor Chokwe Lumumba held a press conference . . .
The Capital Police arrested a suspect in the _____, drawing the ire of the Mayor. . .

Now you've seen all the news to be reported for the next 12 months in Jackson.

Thank you all for tuning in.

First of all, I agree with you on all points 2:40(am??!!? my God man)

Secondly, Simmon's Twitter bio pic is him smiling. Albeit almost more disconcerting than his typical scowl, I will be happy to provide my Venmo or PayPal.

Simmons is pretty funny. When we are all just standing around waiting for things to start, Simmons is usually the one cracking up all the reporters.

Don't get me started on local news. And where do they get some of these novice reporters? They sound like they are in high school and reading a script. I know Jackson would not be considered a major market, but surely they can find reporters more professional than these. And last night one of the stations had a segment about open and running fire hydrants all across Jackson, but they failed to ask the obvious question - Why are the running in the first place?

JTV does a much better job at avoiding racebaiting and controversial reporting that wlbt is built on and apt has been moving towards more and more in recent years.
They also focus a heck of lot more on local and positive stuff.
Special programing is also an emphasis that's obvious with Walt and Sports and such that is typically lacking with the other two.

Anonymous said...

7:08 you forgot:
How conservatives are to blame for all of Jackson's problems.
And the police are too mean and need to be reigned in.
(according to residents who clearly love crime and blight)

The main issue with local TV news is the lack of content -- quality and quantity. The insert the weather 3 times in a half hour, and there are still more commercials than news.

Anonymous said...

The main issue with not only the local but national news also has people who insert their opinions as news.

Anonymous said...

From WJTV I like Melanie Christopher’s “Friday Fur Babies” and Walt Grayson’s “Focus on Mississippi”. Otherwise they aren’t much.

Anonymous said...

1:35 for the win.

The fact that opinion somehow became factual journalism is probably the root of all problems.

Anonymous said...

I can’t watch WLBT. They can’t get the sound worked out. Have to turn the volume way up when the newscasters are talking. Then when they go to a reporter or a commercial it is 3 times as loud and have to turn it way down. Very annoying.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.

Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices.
