How depressing! The "Radical New City" of Jackson is a little Detroit of years past. Detroit has made somewhat of a comeback. I'm afraid it will never happen in Jackson. Is anyone able to identify any of these locations?

Sad. It may not be in my lifetime but Jackson will come back. Charles Bradley can sing it.

so many wrong turns. and thats on everyone going back many years, regardless of pigmentation

If you had told me this was Chernobyl 35 years later, I would have believed you.

For some reason I have recently seen Escape from LA and Escape from New York. This footage seems to fit.

" Is anyone able to identify any of these locations?"

South Jackson.

I believe the trashed factory is either the old General Electric factory or the Coke bottling plant across from Battle Field Park. ( Hwy 80 at Terry Road vicinity).

The bombed out hotel is one of the ones around I-20/Ellis Ave. Old Holiday Inn Hilltop perhaps ?

The overgrown apartment complex is on one of the major streets down there as well.
Mcdowell Rd. / Raymond Rd ?

I'm sure some others can provide better identification.

Chernobyl came to mind to me as well. A place where people lived long ago

How about the welcoming view the tourist get from i20 heading west from stack.

Good drone pilot. My kid is a USAF Drone Pilot with tour in ME. says he loves to fly them and doing what he has to do including pickling off some ordinance. His job and he trained extensively for it. Proud of him.

@3:55 PM

I recognize (barely) the apartment complex. It's the old Casa Grande at the corner of Terry Road and Sykes Road.

Good location for filming Walking Dead!

Detroit is getting much better. But the government there had to do a lot of bulldozer therapy, increased police presence for new development downtown, and invest/keep things in Detroit of value. (Art museum, Symphony, Sports Teams, Museums, Farmers Markets...). Jackson seemingly has no interest in any of this. So sad.

A once great city gone perhaps for ever!

Anonymous said...

Just think how many good paying jobs these buildings once represented. Many a middle class family was supported there. Now it's all poverty level jobs or one percenters.
So sad to see a once "Crossroads of the South" in such sad shape.

" So sad to see a once "Crossroads of the South" in such sad shape."

Yep.

It's more than sad.

Those of us that grew up there can say that.

This is pretty much anywhere in the U.S., where manufacturing has left along with the wealth-creating jobs. Go to pretty much any city/town in MS (especially west of I-55 from TN to LA). Solutions? Downsize the cities to current populations, re-shore manufacturing, consolidate "dead" towns to viable cities, stop tolerating sub-standard education, and stop paying for the birth of children as a "meal ticket" instead of a job.

Anonymous said...

Just one more former great city turned into a shit hole by Marxist Leftist Democrats.

You can thank those who support, prop up and make excuses for the Marxist Leftist Democrats like Bill Crawford, Sid Salters and William Winter for Jackson's demise.

That may well be the best cover of a Black Sabbath song I've ever heard.

Anonymous said...

Make no mistake about it, Detroit had to declare bankruptcy first.

Anonymous said...

He must have edited out all the footage of the druggies smoking a crack pipe in the buildings. Or either he filmed this while they are all begging up along I-55 in North Jackson.

Cool video. I wouldn’t have risked my life to do it though.

Jackson (as a large city in MS) is never going to "come back".

No one is coming here and the young people are leaving.

It is and will suffer the same fate as many small cities across the state and in 20 years the entire state will be nothing more than a welfare hell hole.

Anonymous said...

5:51- You are right on! Jackson has been poorly managed for decades but the fact is that when manufacturing moves out and tax payers relocate to other areas you are left with vacant buildings and a population that can't support the infrastructure. in other words, those that pay no taxes are now living in a city with too little income to support it's size.

Jackson isn't the only city to experience this and it won't be the last. Unfortunately the cities that tolerate crime, murder and theft will recover last, if at all.

The capitol of the state looks like a third world country.

If my cars navigation system had a "skip crime ridden shit holes" feature it would direct me around the City of Jackson.

" Jackson (as a large city in MS) "

Sorry 7:38, even at it's height Jackson has never been a large City.
But I agree with you...

I doubt that town will ever be what it once was.

Wish the state would tear down the mess they left in Jackson.

Have them to fly Lake Hico next

the drone pilot is my wifes first cousin, he's actually a paralyzed veteran, great dude for sure.

The old Jackson enterprise building at eastern city limits on 80

The coke factory was also in there just west.

Anonymous said...

@5:58, what have you done to make Jackson a better place?

Anonymous said...

While the city center crumbles...people are pouring resources and energy to cutting down trees in Madison/Rankin County on new greenfield projects. It's a downward spiral and self-perpetuating... it's understandable that people don't want to invest in refurbishing these terrible run-down properties, but it's also sad and continues the trend ....

So many good memories of Jackson from when I was growing up. It’s sad to see the state of condition it’s in. The radical left got what they wanted. Now, what do they plan to do with it? It’s sort of like when you’re a kid and you get a new toy and your parents watch you break it. You had it back to them and they say, “sorry, you don’t get another one.” So you’re left with a broken toy trying to play with it and make the best of it. You discard it and forget about it. Same thing happened here with Jackson.

@5:58 offers silly statements but no solutions, as usual.Responsibility must begin with community who lives in Jackson, taking responsibility for their actions, decline in crime results from families who commit to their young children and provide a stable environment--and stop passing the buck on being responsible parents, mentors. Educate young people to educate themselves first, before constantly having children they are not capable of rearing, housing, clothing and caring for which feeds the vicious cycle. With decline in crime, business would again feel safe to locate and return jobs.

We get the leadership we vote for. One would think we would want people in leadership roles who have been successful in life and business. However, success is now villainized and punished in our society rather than celebrated. Rather than aspire and work one's way to success, our society would rather pull down those who have studied and worked many long hours to attain success while others twiddled with their time. Socialism does not work and Jackson is an example that eventually you run out of other people's money.

I live in Jackson. 7.42, what could you possibly do to make Jackson better?

Anonymous said...

I heard they were scouting locations for the next Mad Max show and Jackson was high in the running for the wasteland... /sarcasm

Cool video! Jackson is a great city despite its challenges. Thank goodness nothing of any importance depends on vision or leadership from commenters on this blog.

11:10 pm: Your wife's cousin is very talented indeed. Please thank him for his service and for sharing his "art".

8:15, regarding your theory, please name the manufacturing industries that have moved 'out of Jackson' in the past thirty years. I'll wait.

Man get outta here with that BS. Hinds County Tax rates, the state not taking care of property they own, and churches buying and sitting on property are the issues. Yes, crime but if a major company came into Jackson tomorrow, that crime rate wouldn't matter and people wouldn't say a word about it. Some of these "solutions" are just so lazy when the exact things you are talking about are happening everywhere in the state. Again, a Capital City shouldn't look like this, but ask your Legislature what they are gonna do about it.

How about drone visit to road overlays, new housing and other improvements in Jackson????

You wanna know why Jackson is a Hell Hole?? Why trash is on the ground around every corner?? Democrats have run the city for years and its simple. They shit where they eat!!! They don't mind living in filth and trash. Dilapidated buildings on every street. Jackson is Dead !!!

Anonymous said...

When I moved here over 40 years ago, these areas were already in states of neglect.
We all know that south of I-20 and west of the railroad has been neglected for a very long time.
A drone east of I-55 would look very different.
And a similar drone image could be taken in many cities across this Nation.

I did find the murals as examples of hope that even in the debris, attempts at beauty were made.

Anonymous said...

@9:39, I am white, a Jackson native and resident, and a Democrat, and I find your comments ignorant and offensive. No human being should be described in the terms used in your post.

Anonymous said...

It would seem the first step to improving these areas would be to have the sites bulldozed. A blank canvas allows space for imagination. The abandoned buildings just reinforce the useless feeling of hopelessness.

Anonymous said...

@10:46 am, Truth hurts. Unless white Democrats are gentrifying and running the plantation, they accept mediocrity.

This drone footage is only a fraction of depilated Jackson. Ride down Northside, Mill St. behind the Medical Mall, the Zoo, Metro Center or past King Edward... beyond hope.

Jackson used to be a big city. 220,000 and growing in the '80s. Now probably less than 160,000 and declining. Sorry, but white flight happens for a reason before the next poster decides to go there. Good citizens don't like to eat where the poop.

Anonymous said...

10:52 You are exactly right!

Anonymous said...

@10:10
"And a similar drone image could be taken in many cities across this Nation."

So, that makes it okay? You sound like the child who justifies his stupid actions by telling Mom and Dad "But Billy did too."

@10:46
9:39 speaks the truth. I'm sorry if it hurts your feelings. Why is it that the impoverished think the streets are their trash cans? Don't believe it? You say you are a Jackson resident. Ride around town and see which areas are the trashiest. Perhaps the people doing this are not human.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.

Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices.
