Update: Prime-Time makes prime entrance. See below.
Football legend Deion Sanders will be the next Head Football Coach at Jackson State University. The university announced on its Facebook page:
The Jackson State Division of Athletics has an important announcement about the status of its football program Monday at 9 a.m.Coach Sanders' Wikipedia page already reflects the new position:
Due to COVID-19 restrictions it's an invite-only event.
It will be live-streamed on the Jackson State Athletics Facebook page at @GoJSUTigers.
Deion Luwynn Sanders Sr. (born August 9, 1967), nicknamed "Prime Time", is an American athlete, sports analyst and coach who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 14 seasons. He is currently the head coach at Jackson State University.[1] During his American football career, he was a member of the Atlanta Falcons, the San Francisco 49ers, the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Redskins, and the Baltimore Ravens. He also had a part-time career as a baseball outfielder for nine seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), where he played professionally for the New York Yankees, the Atlanta Braves, the Cincinnati Reds, and the San Francisco Giants. Sanders won two Super Bowl titles and made one World Series appearance in 1992, making him the only athlete to play in both a Super Bowl and a World Series. This will be anything but boring.
Update: Check out his entrance at JSU.

But can he coach/recruit?
@8:19
His name alone will do the recruiting. The coaching/winning aspect is something to be seen. I hope he does well at JSU.
Someone should warn him about the hotels in Clinton.
They haven’t been so accommodating to prior JSU staff.
I am not concerned if he can coach. Can he be a CEO? He can hire good coaches and recruiters, and can he manage an organization?
Circus must be in town...another clown is hired. Not only did he invent (and plague the NFL with) the end zone dance, he's always been an 'all about me' clown.
Aside from his football comedy show, there's this about his experiences in baseball and his attachment to failed schools and coaching. But, desperate schools (JSU) do desperate shit (e.g. Marshal Henderson and UMAA)

I wonder if Prime Time will buy a house in Jacktown.
Very exciting news. Should be fun. Congrats to JSU on the home run hire.
Hope they have some money for assistant coaches or he's going to get ex high school coaches who can't coach anywhere else. That being said he will do ok with the kids if he doesn't get burn't out within 18 months with all the JSU problems.
Never read what the layout for this coach will be. Sure it will be much higher than previous losers.
If Deion gets angry will he toss a bucket of ice water on his enemies. See Tim McCarver.
Mississippi college football now has Lane Kiffin, Mike Leach, and Deion Sanders.
Joey Freshwater, Pirate, and Prime Time.
Someone call Bravo or Netflix!
Since JSU won’t play until “Spring “, reckon he’ll not have another job by then?
I wish JSU luck. Hopefully the fan base will buy tickets and come to games.
he’s either going to win and be gone in 3 years. or lose and be gone in three years. either way it’s going to be a wild ride!
Deion was a hell of a talent, but typically guys like that don’t make great coaches because they don’t understand how to get the most out of less talented players. In his head he’ll just be thinking, “why don’t y’all just run faster?” Typically the best coaches are those who were not the most talented players but got the most out of their limited talent.
8:59 Please enlighten us with all your accomplishments, athletically or otherwise. I’m sure we will be impressed!
He didn't invent the end zone dance. It goes back to 1969.
2 years and he quits in the middle of the 2nd
Ah yes. The sportsball game. The most important bread and circus in the land. Carry on proles.
I never cease to be amazed by the complainers on here. Jackson State brings in one of the best and most recognized athletes in the country and people b**** about his end zone dances and dumping water on a reporter decades ago. This hire brings immediate attention and excitement to the school and the city. It's good for both.
JSU still clings to their glory days of the 1970s. Those days are gone and will never happen again. The caliber of players that were passed over back then do not get passed over anymore. Too many schools in the recruitment game and not enough talent to go around.
I love end zone dances, trash talking, the Sonic Boom, and football. Go Tigers!!!
It won't take long for DS to figure out what a dump Jackson is and he be gone.
The guy was a fantastic athlete and perhaps the greatest corner that played the game, but that don't make him a good coach, let alone a head coach. Dumpster fire waiting to happen.
He just made an offer on a nice home on the big water at Lake Caroline. Y'all don't think that he would live "downtown" when he can afford to live "uptown?"
I have never seen a more concentrated collection of fragile and mediocre white male hate over black folks getting something yall ain't got. Yall can't ever just be happy for our success? Naw, y'all dont even want us breatheing the same air!
Look out for a renewed campaign to demand that the State build JSU its own on-campus stadium very soon.
This will be about the stupidest most immature personnel decision JSU has made, and that athletic department has made plenty of them. Florida State which is in deep trouble could have brought the big name onto their staff and given him much needed experience. But they (and a lot of other big time programs) did not. Those serious programs realize that coaching is a profession not a fashion show. Sanders was a great player who wants to use his fame as a shortcut to new notoriety as a coach. He needed a star struck bunch of college administrators desperate enough to barter their program for
temporary publicity. Not likely in the big time. But he found them at JSU.
The decline continues.
Before integration JSU had some very serious talent. They will never be a serious program now until they hire serious administrators and coaches. This ain't it!
11:55. Where’s the hate? And, how is this a black or white issue? Just because Brett Favre is one of the best QBs ever, does not make him coaching material. Stop crying hate because a white guy has an opinion.
11:55 white male from Rankin County here and I am ecstatic over the hire. That is a step in the right direction for the capital city. I hope it turns out to be great hire and he loves it here and stays a while.
11:24 JSU glory days were not limited to the 70's. The program did well in the 80's and 90's. The program started to have problems in 2003 with the James Bell hire. Comegy did a good job from 2006-2013 but it's been been bad since then. Good Luck TIGERS!!
This hire has brought out some Hall of Fame Karens.
Sanders is going to at least be as skilled at coaching as any JSU coach in recent memory, and his celebrity will be tremendous for recruiting.
Huge win for JSU.
Best cornerback who didn't like to hit.
All of these people who claim that Jackson is irrelevant, claim to not care what’s going on in Jackson and claim to no longer follow football, sure have come out of the woodwork to opine on this.
to 11:55...I feel sorry for narrow minded people like you who take offense to anything but pandering, ass kissing talk about anyone black these days. Most of the comments I read on this blog have to do with caring about Jackson State Football program and wanting it to succeed. You, however, have made this a racial issue...this is what is holding our formerly beautiful city back from moving forward for all races!!!
11:55: I'm white and the first thought I had when I read the first sentence of this post was "Awesome!"
To paraphrase a comment I read on JJ some months back, "If you won't judge me by the worst of my race, I won't judge you by yours."
Oh, let's see here... Remember Matt Luke? Joe Moorhead? Tony Hughes? All three are excellent assistants who burned up as head coaches. So what is different with Sanders? How about he has ZERO experience coaching in the college game... At least Luke, Moorhead and Hughes have showed their coaching abilities and how to play the "off-the-sidelines" college game. Sanders was a great player but has shown nothing as a coach or administrator. Maybe by the time Sanders gets canned there will be renewed interest on an on-campus stadium to reduce the cost of playing to such small crowds at Veterans...
How in the world can anyone possible have a serious negative critique about this selection when you have absolutely no comparative experience other than sitting on your damn couch on watching on sat/sun?
J-State fired up the base with this pick, so good pick for them.
Its fucking sports, not a Sup St pick.
8:59- Who knows what kind of coach he'll be, but Prime Time ain't no clown. Clowns don't run a 4.27 40 yard dash. Clowns don't hit a major league home run and score an NFL touchdown in the same week. Clowns aren't pro-bowlers who win 2 Super Bowls AND play in the World Series (in four games of the 1992 World Series, Sanders batted .533 with 4 runs, 8 hits, 2 doubles, and 1 RBI while playing with a broken bone in his foot). Don't know what your problem with Deion is. I think it'll be great to have him here.
Oh, his TD celebrations were fantastic, but not the first (or the best). I think Mr. Billy "White Shoes" Johnson and his "Funky Chicken" take that prize.
In me best Peter Griffin voice,,,,WHO THE HELL CARES.
WOW!!! I thought I was the only one that called him by his first nickname "Neon" Deion. I can't wait to see how he does as a coach. If he coaches as well as he played on the field there are going to be a bunch of folks of all persuasions coming to see JSU play football. Just as in most arena "Money Talks" and as a marketing professional. The marketing of "Prime Time" is also going to be fun to watch. Go Tigers!! BWC
Great hire for JSU. Kiffin, Leach, Sanders all coaching college football in Mississippi at same time. Who would have thunk it a year ago?
He better bring an all-terrain Hummer to navigate these potholes.
It's not like he has never coached before. Just ask MRA. He was here a couple of weeks ago....He should have danced.
It's alright. Most Jackson State fans don't care that much about the football anyway. They come for the show. Deion is showtime. At least for a few games.
JSU will be the Dallas Cowboys of the SWAC. Lose all the time but get the fans to watch anyway.
First to admit about being slow in regards to college football, but what about the original Nike v Under Armour deal.
https://hbcugameday.com/2020/09/17/nike-beef-could-halt-deion-sanders-to-jackson-state/
No matter who the JSU coach may be, just give whomever more than four years to build a winning program.
And what puzzles me, why does Deion Sanders even need a little job coaching job in the SWAC ?
Nothing against the man, but did he blown his fortune . . . and now has to work again?
@4:18PM you sound poor. Elon Musk is worth billions and has at least three jobs. If you have money and want to go broke, stop working. There is more to living than spend8ng money.
Nope 5:53.
You missed my irony.
But that WAS a funny reply!
Never would I have dreamed of ever seeing the names Elon Musk & Deion Sanders within the same sentence.
I only hope he does great things at JSU.
However, I fear Sanders won't be there more than a year or two.
But who knows,? he may call his post game show "Sanders Speaks".
He needs to hire a good media person to cover him and JSU, as everything about the Clarion Ledger sucks.
About a decade ago JSU had Interest in a piece of valuable property I still own in (the hood) their vicinity. Kept getting registered letters expressing interest. Maybe now that “Prime Time” is doing his part to revitalize the “City with Soul” they will entertain an offer that just couldn’t be refused. Thankful the Messiah has arrived!
Great Job JSU, now I wonder which BAPTIST church will try to recruit him ouch!!!!
What a glorious pick. A high school coach. And a master of ceremonies for a 3 ring circus.
@11:24
In regards to clinging to the glory days, you could probably replace "JSU" with any of the "Big 3" in the state.
Who is paying for this?
Is there a reality show in the making?
He just passed me on Hwy 22 with two Highway patrol vehicles excorting his Cadillac SUV and a blacked out van. What is this ridiculous "show" costing us taxpayers?
Probably far less the amount of tax dollars needed for Loose Lips Leach, Cocky LK, and Freaky H. Freeze.
Deion is a legendary player and personality...and very happy for the opportunity JSU and Jackson have.....but the Jackson politics, potholes, and violence will illuminate within no more than three years what a mistake
Deion (and especially his wife) will say was made.
Also, He might be using this as a stepping stone to coaching somewhere else, up to and including the pros - because he knows the NFL is hemorrhaging money, and will be open to anything that draws some tickets.
The negative comments in regards to JSU hiring Hall of Famer Deion Sanders shows me there are some miserable people in this world. And misery loves company.
So um, who should’ve been hired?
Nick Saban? Dabo Swinney. Lou Holtz? The Ghost of Knute Rockne?
9:23 Welcome to the real world of big-time sports media. You can't hire big name personalities and get national attention without criticism. This ain't the hiring of some high school coach at Hick High. What do you expect? When LSU, Ole Miss, Alabama , MS. State etc. makes a controversial hire there will be cheering AND criticism, but there is great attention. Its' part of the media circus. You can't have it both ways. If you want the attention expect the criticism. It comes with the territory.
JSU has rolled the dice. Don't cry if it comes up snake-eyes.
[Unfounded] Criticism and [self] misery own two different definitions.
And I’ve yet to witness any criticism from “national attention.” This is the comment section of a blog. Until it receives “national attention,” it’s merely the comment section of a blog. Filled with negative comments from miserable people. [Not you, cause I can tell you are the purest definition of happiness.]
I mean, Sanders can walk away from this head coaching gig having never won a game. If so, will JSU or Coach Prime or the football players he [and his coaching staff] had recruited lose anything?
Of course not.
And guess what? Criticism and misery will continue to own two different definitions. And you’ll still be a nobody.
@ 6:29 Deion Sanders has drawn tickets ever since he entered the league. You think Coach Prime coaching at a HBCU in one of the worse cities in America will make any difference?
He said God brought him to JSU.
If so, how or why would he return years later [as you’ve somehow predicted] to say God made a mistake?
Lastly, can you give us other instances where God made a mistake or will make a mistake in the future? Or, is your crystal ball relegated to Coach Prime, his wife, JSU, Jackson politics, potholes and violence?
4:25 What?
