Pandhandlers becoming a nuisance and endangering motorists.
If the city of Jackson won't clean up the street corners, Hinds County will. WAPT reported yesterday:
The assistant of District 2 Supervisor David L. Archie posted this message and several pictures on Facebook yesterday:
Loitering and harassing people at the red lights will not be tolrated in Hinds County. We will be out again today cleaning up our intersections all over Hinds County. Thanks to all who helping in this effort, we giving care packets, gift cards, masks, and information for shelter, but standing on corners in Hinds County harssing the citizens is over. Its not accepted in Madison, Rankin or Warren County and it will not be tolerated here. PLEASE JOIN THE EFFORT TO CLEAN UP HINDS COUNTY..
Kingfish note: Once again, someone has to step in and do the Mayor's job for him. This problem proliferated under the current administration. The bums took over Thalia Mara Hall several months ago until the Sheriff took action. It was embarrassing to watch MDOT place fences under the overpasses but that didn't seem to bother anyone in City Hall or at the City Council.
Make no mistake, many of the homeless are mentally ill and need help. However, there are some, especially in Northeast Jackson, who are just plain bums and find it easier to panhandle than work. Several of them stay in hotels nearby.

The mayor continues to be a do nothing empty suit collecting a check. He is too busy moonlighting as a community activist, instead of actively handling his community.
However, the problem here is THE MAYOR OF JACKSON enacted an ordinance or an executive order (I don't remember which) that makes it perfectly legal for this activity to take place. He doesn't give a damn about quality of life for the residents of Jackson. I wonder if on yesterday, while the citizens worried about having enough officers to answer their cries for help, this so-called mayor continued to be protected by having taxpayer funded, highly trained JPD officers guard him instead of sending them to the streets to serve you?
The mayor is two left wing to even clear the panhandlers of the corners. Thank you Hinds County for stepping up.
What really needs to be addressed is the trash and dumping issue. Lots of city employees showing up, doing nothing and drawing a check. I would have everyone of them picking up trash on a daily basis. I mean really? How hard is it to keep grass cut and trash picked up off the sides of streets? The residents should be ashamed of themselves. Who throws trash down in their own neighborhood?
who would ever thought that David Archie would be more of a leader than the Mayor and councilmembers of their own districts? Who cares what house he lives in as long as he does what's best to clean up the streets.
News to me that we have a mayor.
Government in Jackson should be totally bypassed; functions would work much better if the city "government" clown show were taken over by either county or, better yet, by state. Including the airport.
Send OUT the clowns, starting with "mayor" and "city council".
And it should be done at a higher level than just voting in the city as the pandering and local political machines have prevented improvement while the electorate sits around with its head up its collective ass.
Someone needs to question the mayor on his actual working interpretation of the term "sanctuary city". If he tells the truth, it is probably much broader than previously believed and involves economics as well as immigration status.
Panhandling and homeless camps are all part of the sanctuary landscape if the citizens allow it. It's past time for a definitive policy statement regarding the city's position as a "sanctuary city".
Well it’s about time.
Hinds county SO has jurisdiction in the entire county and a huge budget.
Glad to see Hinds SO working for all citizens of Hinds county.
To attempt to massage this as County v City is indicative of this sites main goal - create controversy and clicks.
Chokey is Jackson’s biggest bum
these guys are pro's
Had a one armed old black guy ( looked older than Moses) standing on the corner of Greenway and Hwy 18 several years ago.
I felt bad for the old dude and gave him $5
Couple weeks later I see the one armed bandit on County Line begging
Wonder how quick they'll cave when the ACLU comes knocking with a Intent to Sue charge based on the 1st Amendment, as they always do. They helped create the current MH issue/problem we have in Americka.
Well some of the panhandlers have gotten too aggressive and walking out in the street. Im afraid someone is going to get hit.
This means that the taxpayers in the county are footing the bill for work that is COJ's responsibility.
BOHICA, county residents. Because of your generosity Baby Chok can spend more money on his progressive meaningless wet dreams.
Chokwe has done absolutely nothing. A walking waste of taxpayer dollars. We would be so much better off dissolving the city and letting the County and State run it all.
I know you guys get a lot of glee from shitting on the poor, you know, because it's consistent with "Christian values" and being hospitable and what not.
However, it sounds like a constitutional violation to prohibit people from being on a public street corner just because they have their hand out. What basis do they have to say someone else can be on a street corner but these guys can't -- that they are poor or that they are asking for money (freedom of speech)? I don't have the time to research it, but if there is a decision from the MS Sup. Ct., the Fifth Circuit, or SCOTUS allowing this type of government restriction, I would like to see it. Otherwise, this sounds unconstitutional as shit.
Perhaps you guys would support the First Amendment rights of the homeless if they were exercising their Second, you know, because the Second Amendment protects the First (y'all's words, not mine). But maybe you think that proviso only applies to Republicans.
Speaking of cleaning up. Always gotta put out the big bucks out of state.

" who would ever thought that David Archie would be more of a leader than the Mayor and council members of their own districts? "
AMEN 12:03 !
And David Archie was not even "acting White".
Observations:
1. I have been pleasantly surprised by David L. Archie’s performance thus far. Glad to see him stop being a two bit race hustler and start actually adding value. I may vote for him next time if this continues.
2. Who is running against the trifling child who currently holds the mayor’s seat? We need to get behind them financially and otherwise. We cannot allow this fool to be re-elected.
3. Panhandling would cease all by itself if people would stop giving panhandlers money! That cash goes straight to the liquor store or dope dealer in most cases. Stop enabling, people!!
Yes I live in Jackson.
Lets goooooo David Archie! About time someone made an effort to address this.
4:14 I agree wholeheartedly! Who are WE to look at people with less resources and expect them to participate in an orderly society. We should be giving in as much as we can to accommodate those who just may see work as for chumps. None of what they're experiencing is their fault. It's OUR fault!
After all, look at the great cities of California. Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco. They've allowed THEIR "homeless" the right to the form of "free speech" of which you speak, and it's working out great! Yeah, I mean you have to ask people to not sleep on the sidewalk in front of your business, and if they don't move, well, they just don't move. And yeah, I mean, you have to witness people peeing and crapping on the street. In broad daylight. But again, it's their right, right? And yeah, some streets are impassable because of the tent encampments, but hey, they have their "rights!"
There have been poor people since the beginning of time, and there always will be. That being said, think back when society didn't see everyone as victims and didn't tolerate being "played." That's when we could send our children out to play. Alone. And we didn't lock our car doors, because we wouldn't tolerate someone braking into it. And we didn't worry about house burglaries or home invasions, because criminals knew what awaited them. Mostly, we didn't justify crime by assuming poor people we automatically going to be criminals. Now we do. We justify WHY their criminals, rather than protecting the law-abiding by cracking down on that ass!
The solutions to our societal problems are remarkably uncomplicated. We've just been conditioned to believe that being called mean or a "hater" or whatever is worse than death.....so we do nothing. And we end up getting played over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and ........and we wonder why
Good for David Archie and Credell Calhoun. We can be negative towards them at times but we should always acknowledge when they are do a good thing for the community as a whole. Archie for Mayor?
@5:11 PM - it also goes to lottery tickets and other games of chance.
The problem,4:14, is it is not just a free speech issue, it is a traffic safety issue. The panhandlers are often in areas which are not meant for pedestrians. They are in areas which are for motor vehicles. The state has authority to regulate pedestrian access to highways. Sidewalks are one thing, streets and roadways are another.
" I know you guys get a lot of glee from shitting on the poor "
Nope.
Not at all.
Review the facts . . . not the emotions you've heard at a hipster coffee shop.
Not sure where you've been, but these people are a well organized operation.
They ain't poor.
Far from it.
It sounds as though the homeless in North Jackson are starting to bother Mr. Archie. Wait, he lives in West Jackson doesn't he? Either way it's about time something was done about this growing problem. I wonder if Archie is going to run for mayor of Jackson.
Thanks Mr Calhoun and Mr Archie.
@ 6:43
I have less of a problem with lottery, since they're at least paying a little something back into the system they're otherwise siphoning off.
But I'm sure that $5 supports many street corner games of chance, too. At the end of the day, the dope and liquor pushers end up with most - or all - of panhandled money.
But I guess the enablers can feel good about helping someone get their next fix.
Heck, it may even be the one that kills them.
5:11
when the Hinds County Board of Supervisors becomes more effective than the City Council and Mayor's office, it's time to look in the mirror and realize you suck at municipal government and please, please, just resign!
@4:14: buddy, these panhandlers are doing this as a job. They are not unfortunate in life, just unfortunate that they have chosen to portray themselves as something they are not, and deceive people and litter and trash our city.
4:14 here. Several of you responded by telling me that you think the homeless are bad.
But not a single one of you have explained how this restriction is constitutional (by providing a decision from a court that is binding in this area). Somehow, I’m less than shocked.
If the restriction is unconstitutional, then it cannot stand. Somehow, y’all seem to get that when it comes to guns or face masks, but in zero other contexts, as if constitutional protections stop there.
Maybe I should lower my expectations of you guys (yet again).
4:18 - see 7:12, he (or she) answered your question. It’s a time/place/manner restriction and a valid exercise of the county’s police power to protect public safety.
watch the video . the able bodied white man at 00:57 apparently has plenty of money for the tattoo parlor.
8:48, the street/sidewalk distinction might make sense, but that’s not what David Archie said. He referenced stoplights and intersections, not public highways. Kingfish piled on by referencing Thalia Mara Hall, which, by no stretch of the imagination, is on a public highway. 7:12 did not address that. So, while s/he comes remarkably closer to answering my question than the other posters who seem to think the constitution does not apply to panhandlers, the comment still does not address the restriction Archie is proposing and that Kingfish appears to support.
As of the last year, white people have a total monopoly on panhandling on the ramps of I55 in North Jackson. How does this happen in a city that is 80% black?
HCSO, scoop them up and take them back to Madison and Gluckstadt!
" the able bodied white man at 00:57 apparently has plenty of money for the tattoo parlor. "
My first thought too.
Nothing against tats, but his "art" cost a few dollars.
Pay those guys to hold Trump signs and Chokwe will get rid of them.
11:28 is a genius. Seriously, you should run campaigns.
I'm gonna pay those bozos $40 a day to hold Trump signs. Clean this crap up in 48 hours.
PP
Obviously you don't drive thru here much... more than half of em are black.
I don't think it worked very well
There were 3 at the corner of Lakeland by St D yesterday around lunch and we watched one get dropped off there.
