Senate Committee Kills HB2

The Senate Education Committee killed HB #2 on a unanimous voice vote this afternoon.  The bill would create a school choice program in Mississippi.

The bill barely passed the House of Representatives with a margin of two votes as Republicans in suburban districts (with A-rated schools) voted in the negative.

Committee Chairman Dennis Debar, Jr. (R-Hokies BBQ & Grill) said the committee already passed bills that covered most of HB #2 except for charter school and ESA provisions.

Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann said

The unanimous action of the Senate Education Committee reflects listening to constituents and educators across Mississippi. Senate Bill 2002 is a far more reasonable and conservative form of school choice.

Mississippi has invested heavily in education over the past 14 years, rising to 16th in the nation. Our focus must remain on strengthening public education."

However, school choice supporters should not lose hope as today's action was only the first "dead."  There are still two more deaths to go.

Stay tuned.

Voice vote. There goes Donkeycrat Delbert's leadership again.

Thanks to the Committee & the Chairman for stopping this run away Foolishness-

Anonymous said...

Good. HB2 was not the one for MS.......

Anonymous said...

I've honestly not followed this discussion at all. Would school choice mean that kids in certain school districts be allowed to transfer to other schools in the district at will? Or would students be allowed to transfer into other districts without living in those districts? Thanks in advance for an explanation.

Anonymous said...

Thank goodness they stopped those poors and uppity minorities from going somewhere other than their terrible schools that only churn out more pidgin muttering English teen mothers and criminals. We almost enacted some small government reform there. So glad those big government Republicans were able to thwart it.

It makes perfect sense. Why do the right thing when you can completely destroy the school system. By destroying the school structure, you take the children out of school because their parents want to get them a SAFE education. That allows the allocated money for those withdrawing to be used at the discretion of the “leaders and teachers” still in charge at the public schools. That may explain some of the nice cars, etc. seen by administrators at the “public schools.”

Anonymous said...

It would had ruin private schools private schools are a better choice than public but if you open up the flood gates

Anonymous said...

Good. Stop wanting others to fix your communities and taking care of your feral children.

Anonymous said...

That is ridiculous and uninformed. No school HAS to take the money.

Anonymous said...

Good. Go to school in the community you created.

HB2 was always doomed. Dembert Hoseman never wants people to have power and that is something HB2 offered. So, Dembert lied when he said “listening to constituents and educators” because the committee only listened to the light guv and killed the bill as ordered.
Mississippi will only improve when he is no longer in office.

Douglas Carswell is going to have an aneurism and pay kingfish to post some rant on here about it. Can’t wait.

Cuck cuck cuck CUCKSERVATIVE

Anonymous said...

HB2 was only “considered” for 88 seconds which means that Hoseman killed it with malice afore thought.

Goooch said...

Thanks to those who actually listened to their constituents and held the line against much pressure and out of state money.

Anonymous said...

Have to wonder if Delbert Hosemann is considering switching parties for 2027 Governor's race like former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan has done.

I've read so many reports, comments, etc. today about out of state lobbyists and interests investing in this scheme. WHY? What's up with the out of state interest?

So many times the question has been asked, "Who benefits financially and how". None of those questions have been answered.

Anonymous said...

Talk about a monumental waste of time and the TAXPAYER'S MONEY. Focus on sheet that matters. My God. Y'all were all just chirping about how awesome schools were doing. Dang. Work on real issues.

Anonymous said...

Right. Because that was the first time any of them heard about. Good grief.

Anonymous said...

Not "certain" districts. Students from any district including failing districts and those district can't say no to the student's transfer request. The receiving district would have to agree. No legal boobytraps in this thing at all. How does funding work since the legislature allocates money in July and school starts in August? Who knows? Oh and private schools would also be eligible except they don't have to take the required tests to show any academic anything. It's fine. Everything's fine.

Anonymous said...

Kids didn't create those communities.

Anonymous said...

What's that I smell a-cooking? Special session mebbe?

Anonymous said...

Thank you to the MS Senate for stopping that crap. Take care of your own kids.

Anonymous said...

Hosemann only nibbles the edges. Every single time. His only objective is to keep Mississippi hopelessly mired in the status quo. Many black students will benefit under the House plan. No black students will benefit from Hosemann's non-plan.

Anonymous said...

It was a horrible bill anyway.

Ahole Lottabs said...

This Was not in anybody's top 3 of things they needed from the government. This legislative session, not even close. This was a freebie that was pushed by draft kings. They paid off our politicians to lie, they got busted, then pretended it was you. That was the democrat when they are Retarded

The quiet majority won today. Fortunately there are still a FEW state leaders that aren’t chasing the title of conservative as bestowed by lobbyists. There are many reps from A rated districts that will face their voters next year, and neither White nor the party will be able to save you. The lesson will be taught that you serve your constituents not the hopeful committee appointments.

The guilty dog barks the loudest......and Jason White is yelping to the high heavens because he just got UNANIMOUSLY spanked by a Senate Commitee - and told "We're drinking your tears you child".
White needs to go....pandering to the masses about THEIR children despicable. Many other issues that Mississippi needs rectifying NOW, this ain't one of them. Jason may not get re-elected if he keeps up this "I'm really important" act.

I went K-12 at a private school and the public schools my kids have attended are miles above the education I received. What a ridiculous blanket statement.

If you are a Republican and your votes are celebrated by Nancy Loome, the Democratic Party, the NAACP and the SPLC, you're Republicaning wrong.

Anonymous said...

IF they craft it just like Alabama's, it WILL work. The majority GOP and the Dem's got on the same page and thus far, it is WORKING in Alabama! Because what we have now in MS is completely broken/unfixable. Side note, the TN Lottery affords all TN high school graduates their first two years of community/technical college. What does ours do?!

Anonymous said...

Everyone in Jackson who is trying to keep the wheels on is deeply disappointed by the vote to kill School Choice. Yet, the far suburban districts with money are also in danger of going hard core socialist as has happened in wealthy VA and TN districts when "highly credentialed" leaders are recruited in from self-loathing institutions. I suppose the ones who view schools as businesses are happy, as the graft may continue.

Ultimately School Choice is a check on government power, akin to the 2nd Amendment, that doesn't necessarily have to be used to have a deterrent effect. Both have a large support amongst minorities that have been on the losing end of abuse. If we have Biden-Obama 2.0, and the Federal government yet again tries to force people to ascent to lies about basic biology, parents can cobble together a solution to educate their children without breaking the budget. Yes, the solution might start out in a used metal building, but at least there would be options.

In FL and AZ where School Choice has been going for a while the local districts are now offering multiple styles of "specialized schools—including a Spanish immersion program, an arts-focused school, and a “traditional academy” with uniforms—that enable “families to choose the type of education that is right for their child,”" as a competitive response to try to keep parents choosing to keep their children and dollars flowing to the public school district with one of the ideas to "mimic restaurant-industry focus on customer service". The alternative appears to be more truancy officers, as even though schools hand out free meals with taxpayer money to ostensibly poor students, the product has lost all attraction - so we have to compel compliance - in the best of Democratic traditions!

Anonymous said...

Jason and the rest of the legislature that pushed this, the Senate listened to the overwhelming backlash from their constituents rejecting this nonsense. Take note.

Anonymous said...

Jason White is gonna tell his daddy on all of y’all and you’re gonna be in BIG TROUBLE when Drowsy Donnie hears what RINOs y’all are being.

Anonymous said...

I'm no Delbert fan but thank God for this. I wonder if Mayor Mary has an opinion on the matter? School Choice would most certainly wreck Madison County Public schools and wreck Madison property values.

Anonymous said...

As I recall, the House killed a Campaign Finance Reform bill from the Senate a few days ago. But no outrage because apparently voters are happy with politicians hiding their campaign finance tactics.

Anonymous said...

Well, that should help students that would have had a better chance in another school district. School administrators are relieved that their grift keeps paying off. Good job MS, always got the child’s best interest in mind.

Anonymous said...

What a childish comment. Adults are talking, go sit with the children

Anonymous said...

What, in your opinion, is the real issues?

Anonymous said...

We already have school choice. It's called "pay for private school out of your own pocket."

Anonymous said...

" Many black students will benefit under the House plan. No black students will benefit from Hosemann's non-plan."
I respect your concern for "black students" so I am sure you will understand that many of us have as much concern for white students .

Anonymous said...

As a Madison county mom, I am thrilled this was shut down by the senate. We love our Madison County public schools the way they are!

Anonymous said...

School districts would have had the option to refuse transferring students, so please stop the idiotic babbling about some school districts being wrecked by transferring students. Probably only good athletes would have been accepted by receiving schools. This bill was going to mainly benefit those attending private schools and those home schooling.

If there was any actual leadership in this state they would limit the dollars being spent on administration in school districts and fire the non-performing teachers and administrators.

@8:25am - Thanks for the ChatGPT Heritage Foundation response.

@6:42 PM, like the school system ain’t already destroyed, right. A veritable model for the rest of the world to follow America’s lead.

More of that goooood “conservative” leadership, working hard for Mississippians.

Well I'll guarantee you the black folks that have move to Madison looking for a better life for their families are tickled to death.

And here we see another Dembert cuckservative.

Anonymous said...

Bottom of education bucket attempting to “fix” education by gutting schools and overloading others and stealing money. Want to fix the schools? Then fix the damn teachers and admin and bullshit. Have some balls Bill.

Anonymous said...

@9:22 - What, in your opinion, is the real issues?
National Democrats - We want to teach socialism and Identity politics in schools and are willing to put money into front groups.
Teachers Unions - We need dues and forced dues are the best for us so we can give to National Democrats.
Rural Democrats - We like graft
Jackson Democrats - JPS is under our control forever and does not need to change
Jackson Republicans - We are about to move to Oxford, but perhaps we can stay if you help us out a bit - but the state will have to clean the mess up soon otherwise.
Rural Republicans - We like graft & big schools for football
National Republicans - Do you recall 2 minutes ago when the Biden FBI was investigating parents at school board meetings for objecting to C-19 isolation forever for a virus? It will come back around soon...

Now what are the segregationist academies going to do with their new lower elementary schools they are building? The writing is on the wall. They aren't expanding to let this die. Too much money waiting to be sucked up by private interest.

Anonymous said...

"Thanks to those who actually listened to their constituents and held the line against much pressure and out of state money."

I agree with the statement above. I have already called my Senator and said thank you!

Anonymous said...

Good job Senate. Most I have read online was against this bill.

Anonymous said...

I haven't forwarded this closely, but appears to be a black-white issue- like everything else in MS.

7:59,

I have zero problem “Republicing wrong” when the Republicans are ACTUALLY WRONG.

And my local rep who voted against our highly rated public school district is about to learn a hard lesson at the next reelection. And he knows it’s coming.

Anonymous said...

On the Covid thing, it was set up to destroy Trump’s first term. It was never about the virus, it was about control. Democrats fell in line quicker than Conservatives. When are people going to understand that the political class of society does not give a shit about us. They say whatever they have to say to get your vote. Afterwards, they don’t care what you say, until it’s time to vote again. “We the people” sounds good but is not practiced in America.

Anonymous said...

There is money to be had somewhere with School Choice. From what I’ve heard the big business guys want to privatize schools. This might not be a bad thing, but let’s be honest with what’s driving the interest.

Anonymous said...

The Senate has separate bills for most provisions of HB2, except the likely unconstitutional public funds to private schools component.

I say likely, because the state Supreme Court sometimes says the constitution doesn't say what it clearly says.

One doesn't get money back from the government to cover their country club dues for not visiting public parks; neither should folks get public money for private schools-especially with the right of refusal.

Public to public transfers should be considered. But, the real question is, how to fix the system we have. The general population must be educated. Many feel the current system is broken. OK; completely redesign it, but ALL children deserve a chance to succeed, not just those whose parents have the means to transport them to private schools.

Anonymous said...

As I understand it, the district the student is trying to move to, has to agree to take the student. So, if this is the case, how long will it be before someone is denied transfer and they sue. In other words, if you accept Jack but don't accept Jill.....lawsuits coming??
I just think this could open up a whole can of worms.

Anonymous said...

Start the kid out early learning and playing tons of football and you’ll have a great chance of finding 50k cash that fell out of the sky landing at your apartment door then you can pay for your kid to go a school like JA or other private schools their senior year and graduate. Voila!

Anonymous said...

Or you can be a gop stooge, find a paper bag with $50k, and then be appointed border czar

Anonymous said...

So if you’re poor and in a shitty school you are stuck there. No choice.

mr speaker (no respect for this 1) THIS SHOULD NOT BE KINDERGARDEN POLITICS, You shouldn't assume You alone set the narrative. I'm proud of my Counties House members for voting what they hear at home-where they're Elected from. I'm more proud of the Senate education Committee for their Vote yesterday. mr speaker seems to think he sets the tone, the Agenda for Ms Government but probably doesn't after all. Why can't our Legislators be Men & Ladies> Negotiate, Compromise>reach a senseable Legislation that benefits Mississippians? This "take it or else" mentality is not going to fare well for several Legislators come the next Election-bet on it.

Anonymous said...

You know, having the government take over educating your children is entitlement spending and it should be means tested. Since the D's are always concerned about running out of education money just introduce an amendment to require parents making over 300% of average household median income to pay the State of MS formula share of their own children's education expense.

Then all the dudes dropping off junior is a shiny F-350 with nary a scratch might just come to realize for their own good, and before it is too late for junior, that they are supposed to be directing the education of their children not dumping it off on the nanny state.

Anonymous said...

Gutting schools while taking only half the money? Should be a plus for those failing institutions providing many more available dollars for their administrative staffs that won't decrease as the student population does.

Anonymous said...

That's a damn good reason to be for or against something. Maybe we do need school choice so we can better educate folks who choose to comment on social media sites

Anonymous said...

Clearly you are either (1) not a constitutiobnal scholar, nor a lawyer; (2) have not bothered to read or comprehend the proposed bill; and (3) are great at parrotting what others tell you to say. Congratulations and thanks for your input, worthless as it is.

Anonymous said...

False. This about dinero not skin color.

Anonymous said...

School choice? How any some accountability for the shitty schools that are failing? Hold the administrators and teachers feet to fire for their failures and for the parents of thei dumb kids. Wishful thinking, but it will never happen.

Instead, they want to ship these failing kids to good schools and ruin the standards that have been established there.

Pathetic joke.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
