Mayor Announces Amphitheater plans for Jackson Zoo

The city of Jackson issued the following statement.

The City of Jackson’s Department of Planning & Economic Development has unveiled plans for a new amphitheater at the Jackson Zoo, marking a significant investment in the city’s cultural and entertainment infrastructure.

The proposed Jackson Zoo Amphitheater will enhance the visitor experience by providing a dedicated venue for live performances, educational programs, and community events. The project, designed by Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart & Associates, Inc., includes a modern performance space, an enhanced wetland experience, and improved pedestrian connectivity to key areas within the zoo.

"This amphitheater represents a step forward in our ongoing efforts to revitalize the Jackson Zoo and create new opportunities for residents and visitors," said Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba. "By integrating entertainment with education and conservation, we aim to make the zoo a year-round destination for all ages."

Key features of the proposed amphitheater include:

  • A dedicated performance stage for concerts, theater, and community events.
  • Seating designed to accommodate a range of audience sizes.
  • A natural setting that blends with the zoo’s existing landscape.
  • Enhanced accessibility and connections to the zoo entrance and pedestrian pathways.

The project is part of a broader initiative to revitalize the Jackson Zoo and surrounding areas, aligning with the city’s long-term economic development strategy. Construction is projected to begin in July 2025, with completion anticipated by December 2025.

ROFLMAO What won't he think of next?

I thought that kid on the right had no head until I zoomed in

The return of Electionman!

Why? Someone needs to tell him he is embarrassing himself. We told him we don’t want him no more. He needs to move out the way and let us heal. More Slick Talk can’t fix what he has destroyed. We can’t trust his words. His vision is not our vision. Sir, please stop.

Say it with me one time "Political Theater" nothing to see here

an enhanced wetland experience“ diving into the closest pond when the shooting starts….I had birthday parties for both children in the late 90’s , it was great then…

always alice said...

Is that only if he is elected. If attendance is so low as reported; I cannot see this as a source of revenue. Crime with small children & no animals don’t compute!

very weak and a waste of money at any level. Looks like something a high school would do on a whim, and if recent history is taken into consideration, no one is going to the zoo for any event. Waste

fed up in Jackson said...

also, that's a awful lot of white folk in that artist rendering which makes me think that this rendering was produced for another job somewhere, and the lying mayor borrowed it to say he did something

Anonymous said...

Yeahhhhhhh...It'll never happen & I would bet $100,000 on that. Great timing though, right after Chokwe got his ass handed to him in the primary. If I had more time on my hands, I would FOIA some communications on that to see when the City and that engineering firm started working on that plan...

Can attendees purchase buckets of fried Thalia Mara catfish and access sufficient trash cans and portatoilets?

Anonymous said...

Just stop. Put any "projects" on hold until the new mayor takes office.

Steve said...

Archie warned you fools…the white peoples takin over. Look at the picture!

Krusatyr said...

The rendering shows a $25,000 timber pergola with a sloped roof, not an amphitheater, which is designed to reflect sound out to an audience. Perhaps it's just an outdoor Fried Catfish Kitchen.

Antard will have lost the runoff before this project has even gone out to bid.

Anonymous said...

Transportation to/from in armored-up buses will be provided at no charge.

Anonymous said...

What will he conjure up next to pander for votes?

Anonymous said...

Bruh. That's a shed. Looks like my deer trough actually.

Anonymous said...

4:12 Exactly.
Unless...... unless.....David L. Archie gone put all us white folks IN the ZOO!

Anonymous said...

Those poor animals will now have to listen to Battle Rappers all during the night.

Same firm apparently had the disappointment of being associated with the Engineering Design Technologies Inc., Mississippi Developers LLC proposal for the JRA COnvention Center hotel that didn't fly in 2015.

With Mitzi Bickers.

Coincidentally also out of Atlanta.

Interesting timing for this boondoggle.

Anonymous said...

I needed a laugh today.

Anonymous said...

@4:51. Ha! Now that's funny.

Anonymous said...

The design work probably cost more than the construction of this amphitheater

Anonymous said...

Most free AI tools could have done a better mock up.

Anonymous said...

Where is the money coming from to build this lunchbox shed ?

Anonymous said...

Where did the money come from to have the design work done? Marcus Wallace's campaign account?

Anonymous said...

I was on the fence before, but now I am fully onboard with Lumumba. This is superior leadership.

Anonymous said...

Should have posted this last Tuesday.

Anonymous said...

I see this will be located next to the new mosquito exhibit.

Anonymous said...

4:12 for today's win; 4:29 a close 2nd

Anonymous said...

That is hilarious!!!

Anonymous said...

He can't help himself....and he has a handful of loudmouth racist buddies ruining the city and cheering him on.

Anonymous said...

Great location, who’d a thunk it.

Anonymous said...

If I had a nickel for all the plans and artist renditions Lumumba has put out that never come to fruition I’d have a lot of nickels

Anonymous said...

I’m thinkin Chocky’s kid had to do a school presentation and this was the product. So, he said let me throw this out there. There ain’t a rapper or DJ in the world that would agree to entertain at this place without hazard pay. So embarrassing.

Anonymous said...

I count 41 in attendance whoop whoop

Anonymous said...

Shutter the Zoo and fix the damn streets

Anonymous said...

Uh that's a pavilion. I think there is already one there. Will it open before Thalia mara hall?

Anonymous said...

Yep, according to the release it will start in late July. Post election...

Anonymous said...

While this is too funny, it's only the start of what we may see before the runoff.

Chuck has what ... about two more weeks before the polls reopen ?

Expect more goofy "plans/visions" along with additional outlandish allegations about the irrelevant number of White folks that are still voting in Jackson.

One fact seems guaranteed:
WE WILL BE ENTERTAINED.

I swear they are just using the zoo to launder money.

Anonymous said...

Doesn’t the city counsel have to vote on this kind of stuff and spending? I’d be curious to know if or when this was brought to them. Have they approved it by vote? The mayor can’t just make up pet projects and get them done(hell he can’t get much done), but doesn’t it have to have a vote?

Anonymous said...

Jackson's Marion Barry.

Anonymous said...

Wait it is almost all WHITE FOLKS in the drawing.....

Anonymous said...

Chokwe could waste less money by building a small pole barn and leaving the sides off.

Anonymous said...

Chokwe may have already noticed that Mayor Barry went to Federal Prison and after his release managed to get elected first to the city council and then as mayor.

Anonymous said...

If I were an architect or an engineer, I would be embarrassed to put my name on this.....

Anonymous said...

Not a terrible idea. It's not pie in the sky, and would be relatively inexpensive. The disk golf course they installed out there has proven that even suburban folks are willing to come to that area.

However, it will take a different mayor to pull it off.

Anonymous said...

All it has proven is that disk golf aficionados, of which their number is very small, are willing to take the risk.

Anonymous said...

A couple of years ago, a cousin of mine who is a combat veteran and was wounded in action when his tank was hit by an RPG near Abu Gharib, was driving through Jackson and texted me to ask whether he should stop at the zoo. I told him no, the area is pretty rough and the zoo is run down. He stopped anyway. He told me West Capitol looked worse that bombed out Iraq in stretches. So yeah, good luck getting folks to come out for that. I suspect this idea will get nixed when Chokwe loses the runoff.

Anonymous said...

Turning the zoo into a really nice park seems like a no-brainer. It would have to cost much less where there is no animal care involved. Then see if it can justify its existence.

Anonymous said...

"Seating designed to accommodate a range of audience sizes." - Um...where? On the ground and the wall?

Anonymous said...

At one point Mill Street rivaled the moon for huge craters.

Anonymous said...

8:40 most "disk golf aficionados" are liberal pot heads that are oblivious to their surroundings, bro!

Anonymous said...

I can't believe the mayor allowed that photo from the design group. Most (all but one?) of then peoples are white!

Anonymous said...

Reminds me of a Scout project I saw somewhere. And that cannot be Crack-town in the drawing - too many white folks (meaning 1 is too many for the area) and everyone is too thin.

Anonymous said...

Pray this one doesn't happen. The poor animals. Who is stupid enough to build a noise maker next to a zoo?

Anonymous said...

I'd imagine those poor animals are more worried about decent living conditions and avoiding wild dogs than noise.
They have surely been subjected to endless loud music from cars and guns for years already.

Anonymous said...

@08:40; having made that little "adventure to exotic lands" as well, I concur on the comparison. Me, however, I stay my arse on the FOB these days. I avoid Jackson except for the unavoidable medical appointment and always have plate armor in the vehicle. Just sayin.

He can’t use water $ increases if Ted is granted the 12% increase to cover non payers. Ted is desperately trying to HELP COJ taxpayers. I hope he wins.

Anonymous said...

this will be the perfect venue for the countless untalented soundcloud mumble-rappers in the Metro!

Anonymous said...

How is this amphitheater in Livingston Park different from the Gertrude C Ford Wildlife Adventures Theater across the driveway inside the zoo?
And would people who go to the amphitheater actually cross the driveway to enter the zoo?

Anonymous said...

And yet on another note Ted Henifin is thrown to the wolves for asking for an increase in residential water bills @ $9 a month. This is one combo meal out or less.

Anonymous said...

Ted needs to stop concentrating on "helping" the ones who don't pay their water bills. Want water? Pay for it like the rest of us do. Dont pay? Cut it off. I am a huge Ted supporter but this crap of making a very small percentage of folks pay HIGHER prices to cover the system for all people in Jackson is bullshit.

Anonymous said...

Ted needs to take his 400K salary and the 250K salary of Jordan and sit down. They have run out of federal funds due to reckless spending on advertisement and mail outs to the various households. I am tired of Wingate rubber stamping all of Ted's requests for funding after recklessly spending the $800 million our District 2 Congressman secured for Jackson, MS.

Anonymous said...

Adding to my comment of 3:52 (above). Ted was royally screwed when he couldn't use some of the funds to pay off the debts. If that had happened, he would be looking at a true collections vs water/sewer system cost. Since he was blocked to pay off the debts, the collections have to cover debt payments too. Situation sucks.

Anonymous said...

No doubt you are a Lumumba supporter because those are his talking points. He attacks Henifin and then in the next breath says he wants him to be successful. He's in a runoff versus John Horhn, not Ted Henifin.

Anonymous said...

Why fix potholes/blight/crime/sewers/libraries when you can build an amphitheater which no credible singer/band would perform at? Right?

Anonymous said...

Watching residents whine about a $9 increase after many of them paid nothing for years is riot.

Anonymous said...

You know Mayor, the Zoo should have been a yearly task for the past eight years, not for 2025. Too far gone to turn it around

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.

Kamikaze will perform his new song F*** Bush, he's still a _____. Did I mention there was no referee? Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices.
