Stamps Stumps

State Representative De'Keither Stamps (D-H.D. Gibbes & Sons) had a few things to say at church Sunday.

Personally, I think public officials should be held to the standard of fiduciaries.

Wish he'd run for Mayor.

Am I wrong to say that it’s not legal to speak of politics in church?

Stamps is the MAN!

Can we start with accountability and responsibility.
walk before you run

He’s not wrong

12:44, yes you are very wrong.

He has my stamp of approval.

I listened but don't understand the reference to H.D. Gibbes & Sons in the title

Excellence...like during him time as councilman? I especially loved his excellence when vetting Emily Sanders for Metrocenter. I saw 10 seconds of her talking and smelled BS, but he couldn't. That was not one of his excellent times for sure.

Speaks the truth !

12:40a, I think he will eventually. He just needed to put some time and distance between himself and City Hall to be later positioned to run.

That's not an endorsement for him to be mayor, BTW.

Tax every church that talks politics other that "go vote" at election time.

I certainly don't disagree with what he is saying, but I don't love politics in church. Why are black churches portrayed as political outlets for democrat politicians? And if that is the case, as this clip indicates, why? I've never heard politics discussed in a white church. Its a very interesting relationship.

I imagine it has to do with the church historically being a sort of town hall in the black community, and issues facing the community universally applied to all within the community/congregation. With such homogeneity in a community, common life struggles, and the only other platform for remedy being politics, its not hard to see the one (political) merged with the other (church).

By today however, we should have moved beyond this. Black Americans should not feel like they are a diaspora in a white society. Politics should not map onto one race's religion, in the exact opposite way it does for a different race of the exact same religion. And democrat politicians shouldn't need the blessing of the black church to run for office. Its really infantilizing of the entire race to suggest that their pastors are their de facto representatives to elect their representatives.

Isn't the title an oxymoron?

@1:55 - yes, "speaks the truth" ----- as he knows it.

Prone to ignore the truth at times when its convenient for him and his storyline; proved to be the case while he was on the City Council and continues in the legislature.

A perfect example of the Peter Principle - promotion until one reaches their level of incompetence. Now, he is trying to reflect Peter Principle II, which is after having been promoted to one's level of incompetence - looking to be promoted further.

12:44, it’s close to impossible to separate religious beliefs and politics. Rest assured abortion, same sex marriage, war and every other political subject gets addressed by preachers. They risk their non profit status when they promote a specific candidate.

Yet......no explanation of how one achieves excellence.

Excellence doesn't just happen. People have to WORK towards excellence. Excellence can't be achieved by blaming everyone else when they don't achieve it.

@12:44 - Churches and charities that are classified as 501(c)(3) are prohibited from engaging in political campaign activity. Not sure how frequently the IRS looks at churches for infractions, but I’d bet a lot of churches run afoul of this.

So many talk the talk but are clueless about walking the walking.

So, Stamps is a fixture at the restaurant?

Anonymous said...

That's it! Instead of complaints and excuses being the primary topic of discussion coming from these so-called leaders, excellence and performance should always come first, second, and third. If excellence is not good enough then you can complain.

"I listened but don't understand the reference to H.D. Gibbes & Sons in the title"

Our host does that often; apparently he thinks he's being clever but these "inside jokes" often fall flat because most of us don't understand the reference at all.

Just an observation, I’m guessing KF is trying to give a subtle hint about “where” people are coming from. You know where they are from as in where they were born, their political perspective, upbringing, etc. ya know, a hint as in a clue.

The Stamps Farm is right down the street from Gibbes.

Sigh. Just another moment in time of empty talk.

Excellence is often driven most of all by knowing what you should NOT do. Jackson's community has too many children being taught that they can do pretty much anything they want without consequence. Until the words "No more" start to reverberate through their homes and churches, this stump talk is a hollow one.

What 6:54 said. But, what will cause that to ever happen?

Anonymous said...

And he is running for a seat on the MS Public Service Commission.

It's not illegal to discuss the morality of public policies in church or have politicians speak.
What is illegal is for a minister or church to endorse or financially aid A party or A candidate.
Unfortunately, not all church " leaders" are ethical so they create " businesses" with church funds and " charitable" groups" or "camps" and find ways to funnel that money to themselves, their relatives, or politics. They have the church technically own the preachers "limo" or "home" and "gift" it later, for example.
Just as you don't look for predators in your churches, you don't look for con men either.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
