The Madison County Journal skewered JPD Chief Rashall Brackney over her decision to not renew the Flock Safety contract:
If any city in America needs Flock cameras, it's Jackson, Mississippi.
Yet Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney stood before a City Council committee last week and announced that JPD will not renew its contract with Flock Safety, the company whose license plate readers have been quietly helping police track stolen cars, wanted suspects and getaway drivers across the capital city. Her reason was privacy concerns, according to WLBT.
You’d think the police chief of one of the most dangerous cities in the country would grab every crime-fighting tool she could get. You’d be wrong. This is Democrat run town: so tied to the latest national talking points that it’s too stupid to help itself.
Look at the “outcry” behind this decision — because there was none.
Council President Vernon Hartley said he’d been getting “more and more emails.” When WLBT asked how many, the answer was about five. Five. He also said he knew of no Jackson officer misusing the cameras.
Five emails and no abuse. For that, a city with a body count that would embarrass a war zone is turning off its eyes.
Even Councilman Brian Grizzell, who voted against the cameras in 2024, admits they have helped solve “a lot of crimes.” He suspects the emails came from organized anti-police groups that “swoop in and send a lot of emails.” When the man who voted against the program is defending it, the people running the police department have lost the plot.
Then there’s the logic. The chief says the city will still “look at license plate reader systems” that tie into its cameras and Real-Time Command Center. So Jackson is getting rid of plate readers so it can go shop for plate readers. Only in a city run by Democrats could that pass for a plan. In the meantime, every stolen truck and every shooter’s car rolls through Jackson unrecorded while City Hall holds meetings about meetings. Rest of editorial
Ouch.
